Daphne Sheldrick, whose family arrived in Africa from Scotland in the 1820s, is the first person ever to have successfully hand-reared newborn elephants. Her deep empathy and understanding, her years of observing Kenya's rich variety of wildlife, and her pioneering work in perfecting the right husbandry and milk formula have saved countless elephants, rhinos, and other baby animals from certain death.
In this heartwarming and poignant memoir, Daphne shares her amazing relationships with a host of orphans, including her first love, Bushy, a liquid-eyed antelope; Rickey-Tickey-Tavey, the little dwarf mongoose; Gregory Peck, the busy buffalo weaver bird; Huppety, the mischievous zebra; and the majestic elephant Eleanor, with whom Daphne has shared more than forty years of great friendship.
But this is also a magical and heartbreaking human love story between Daphne and David Sheldrick, the famous Tsavo Park warden. Most inspirational book on nature and humanity. Anyone who has a love for animals of any kind will not be able to put down Dame Daphne Sheldrick's autobiography. It details how her family settled in Africa, her personal life entwined with her husband and soul mate David Sheldrick. Her stories involving so many orphan animals are heartwarming and heartbreaking. This phenomenal woman with only secretarial school training learns the intricacies of elephant life and how very close their emotions parallel that of humans. Through her determination she alone solves the mystery of elephant milk to allow her to raise baby elephants successfully. Eventually leading to their reintroduction back to the wild.
Life, Love and Elephants. Truly wonderful reading, this is a heartwarming, true story of the life of one of the pioneers of Kenyan wildlife preservation.

A bad romance novel. This is much less a book about nature or Africa than a self-indulgent romance novel about the author's love life. Very disappointing.
