Night by Elie Wiesel & Marion Wiesel Book Summary

A new translation from the French by Marion Wiesel. Night is Elie Wiesel's masterpiece, a candid, horrific, and deeply poignant autobiographical account of his survival as a teenager in the Nazi death camps.

This new translation by Marion Wiesel, Elie's wife and frequent translator, presents this seminal memoir in the language and spirit truest to the author's original intent. And in a substantive new preface, Elie reflects on the enduring importance of Night and his lifelong, passionate dedication to ensuring that the world never forgets man's capacity for inhumanity to man.

Night offers much more than a litany of the daily terrors, everyday perversions, and rampant sadism at Auschwitz and Buchenwald; it also eloquently addresses many of the philosophical as well as personal questions implicit in any serious consideration of what the Holocaust was, what it meant, and what its legacy is and will be.

Fascinating!. This book has cause so many emotions throughout. You never really understand what these people went through. There were multiple times I had to stop and think about what I had just read. It was hard to comprehend how something so cruel happened to people still alive today. This book really show the view of a survivor and how they were degraded to animals. It is an excellent read!

I have no words. What does one say about this life? His incredible courage is beyond anything that I am able to comprehend. This book will live in my heart as does my memory of Auschwitz that I visited for the first time this year.

Read in school. This is a really great book. Will leave you feeling a range of deep emotions throughout. It’s terrible that someone had to go through this, that so many people had to go through this. An incredible book by an incredible man.

Better than Amazon’s audio book. This was a great book for my kids to read. How the people excepted progressive socialist democrats. Then all this happened in detail. Apple book so much better than audiobook! I don’t like paying monthly I would rather read it or audio but I want to buy the book not rent for $15 a month. Just to use it!! Hate audiobook from Amazon.

Bad book. Worst book I ever read

night. best book i have ever resd

G. Good

Great book. One of my favorite books we read this year

Primordial Depravities. It’s disquieting that humans can regress into barbarism so long as civilization deems it permissible. Almost a century removed, people still struggle with urges to humiliate, emaciate, and incinerate brothers and sisters. We like to think sane people as incapable of acting on these impulses, yet the crimes recounted in Night were carried out by sane people. So, while it has been a century, it will be many centuries - if not all of human history to come - before humanity can close the book on its primordial demons. The best bulwarks against this dark nature are love and memory. Elie Wiesel contributes to that bulwark with his body of work.

Intense, heart wrenching. This is a great document for our day. A reminder of how dark the world can turn in such a short amount of time, and how much impact one man can make on the world, for bad or good. One of the few books that can actually make me sympathize with the writer and feel the scenes and emotions. Beautifully described. An important historical document for all ages to come. We must be aware of the tragedies endured by millions so that we might prevent this from happening again.

Must read. I have toured the camps in Poland. I was reading this book forgetting it was once a reality and not fiction. Must read

Night. I personally started to read this as a school book, but now it is one of my favorite books ive ever read. Do recommend to all.

Read more than once. I first read “Night” when I was in high school. I liked it, but I did not recall much from my first reading. Fast forward 10 years, I’m subbing in an English class and there’s a class set of “Night.” I picked it up and just started reading it again. This time the messages, themes, and characters became more vivid to me and I’m fully engrossed in this powerful novel.

Excellent read. This is an amazing book; it removes the abstraction of the holocaust and gives you a first hand recount of the atrocities of the concentration camps.

NIGHTTTTTT❗️❗️❗️. This was one of the best books I ever read , very emotional , dramatic . Lots of details . WOW, I just learned so much . This book is amazing 👌🏾💫💫

Night. I feel such shame with what humans do to one another. It’s so horrible that our Country did not step in to help the annihilation of the Jews sooner. We could have saved so many lives. There will always be war and the innocent will suffer.

Night. I found this book to be courageous, enlightening, and deeply moving.

Wow!. I read this entire book in 6 hours. I hate reading but I couldn't put it down. This book could change a life

Not really. The book was okay not very my type of book that’s would read more than once and the only reason why I read it was for school

Anyone who says this is a bad book, BOO. Boo you! This story is absolutely FANTASTIC and a must read to all who enjoy studying the history of World War 2.

Night. Remarkable. This did not happen that long ago.

Spectacular History. Just a flat out amazing book! I was given this as an assignment in my English class and I absolutely loved it.

I remember this. So many memories brought back from High school! Even cholos liked this book!!

Amazing!. Absolutely amazing, such a great read!

Another reminder. So we never forget. A very important book. You can't put it down and you should give it everyone you know.

Page turner. I had to read this book for school and liked it so much i read it 3 more times

A must read for all humanity.. I recall reading this years ago in grade school. As young as I was I don’t think I was truly able to grasp the horror of these camps. Since then I’ve grown up and out of seemingly nowhere felt the need to revisit this book. With years behind me it allows me a totally different perspective on this story. I implore everyone to read this on your own accord. Not due to a school reading list but simply to learn the history and remind ourselves that these horrors happened.

Reading this in school. I love this book... it was powerful too read it while I was in school bring back memories love it🖤💯

So important. May this book never be forgotten.

Very graphic but a great book!. This book is amazing. It's graphic but gives a lot of specific details about living in the concentration camps during the holocaust.

This Book!!!. It brought the true terror of this horrific attack on humanity to a way never seen before. The tragic tale brought tears to my eyes and made me Renner my family back home in Switzerland, and Europe. The story brought the same stubborn hope of Ann Frank.

Emotionally Scarring. I had to read this book in the eighth grade for school. The topic, which granted is horrible, does not need to be taught this way to kids.

Everyone must feel this book.. A history of a person that will place you in the middle of one of the most disgusting atrocities perpetrated on the world. In this book, you are hurt and broken with the people. You feel the misery and the torn identities of good people. The saddest part of this story is that it has not been read by every person in the world and in every language. I appeal you to read and feel the pain, and NOT just know the history.

Touching Book. This book is wonderful! It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read. It was very intriguing, and gratifying. You get to see all of the trouble Elie went through during the Holocaust, and how he came out stronger than ever. Throughout the book you see how caring he is to his father and majority of the people he comes across. I recommend this book for everyone to read. The messages delivered through this book are strong, and deserve to be heard.

Night. I red this book my ninth grade year and I absolutely love this book

Important Story and Great Work. With Russian terrorists committing genocide in Ukraine, this book is as important as ever. Very informative and a great read.

Please understand. I found a lot of reviews saying, “it’s scaring and horrible.” To some people that may be the case, but for a 13 year old kid that had to read this book, it really opened my eyes to the holocaust. It helped me understand the pain and suffering. This book is not about how great of an author Elie is. This is how about his story and his suffering through the Holocaust, losing everyone and everything he loved. Please try to understand this before leaving a bad review because you can’t understand.

Haunting…. …is too light of a word for this book. The worst thing one could do upon reading this is move on, without contemplation, to the next book.

MUST READ. Fascinating story!

Great read!. I read this book thousands of times and will read it thousands more!

Boring. Only for school

Night. This book illustrates very well the terrors and horrors of World War Two. It helps you understand what the Jews and disabled and others went through in the hands of the nazis. The book is very graphic and at sometimes scary.

Night. A heart wrenching book that should be required reading in schools! May we never forget the terror and abuse faced by the Jews duringWorld War II.

Good book but doesn’t have chapters. ?

Bittersweet. A agony to read.. Insights into a horrific world of cruelty and hate that is intermixed with compassion for loved ones and humanity in general.

Amazing. I had to read this book for school and it is so moving it brought me to tears

Wow. Amazing book!

Touching. Well written. Very emotional.

Fake. He is lying

Outstanding!. I never did read Elie Weisel’s book “Night,” like so many did during their high school years. This book gives such a great perspective and insight of what a child had to endure while being a prisoner in the concentration camps. After I started reading, I could not put it down and ended up finishing the book in a couple of hours.

Accidental purchase. I accidentally purchased the wrong book. :( I want my money back

Worth reading. If you have any interest in history please read this ! I personally thought it was just amazing and it sent cold shivers. Unexplainable must read.

Night. This book needs to be read and shared amongst all. It's honesty and brutality give insight into what the Jews of Europe went through and the harshness of it. It also clearly represents what the human soul can and can't endure.

Great. Not sure words can share what this person truly experienced. Great book.

Phenomenal. I read this book in a high school english class and absolutely loved it. You feel like you're really there with Wiessel throughout the entire thing.

Night. This book is beyond one of the most important pieces of literature ever written. You will weep - and you will remember to never forget. I've read it to both of my children.

Night. This chilling account of the plight of Elie Wiesel and his family being sent to the concentration camp at Buna in1944 is ghastly. The author is very lucky indeed, to have survived, and I think it is important for all of us to read this account, and others like them, lest we forget. Our freedom should never be taken for granted, nor should the ultimate sacrifice that so many made ever be forgotten.

Night. I really enjoyed this book.

Amazing book!. Devoured in 2 days.

What to say..... Fear is felt... The hatred is there. To repeat what happened in those days would be unforgivable. No one can say they feel this way. Even those who suffered as he did. They all knew pain. Just differently. This novel shows that. From the inmates to the officers, all suffered. This book shows only a glimpse of what it was like to live in WW 2. That is what makes it such a powerful novel. That is what makes it touching.

Night. Gut-wrenching, yet incredibly inspirering, a triumph over horror.

Night - Book Review. In my opinion, I absolutely adore this book. The way the author wrote from his perspective made me feel many emotions such as sadness, fear and relief. In other words, the book makes you feel like you’re on the edge of your seat, waiting anxiously on what is going to happen next. The only problem I had with the book was the ending. I’m not going to spoil the ending but all I will say was that it felt a little rushed and the author didn’t put as much effort as he did at the beginning and middle. Although, this is just my opinion, and it is your choice to listen it or not.

Powerful. Very well written. At my young age of 33 it is still hard to believe this did in fact happen. My grandpa was a part of the Hasty P’s. Just the idea that people can be so cruel. That said, we see that behaviour on a small scale every single day. Heartbreakingly beautiful

So powerful. True and very disturbing. I love this man. He is so humble despite the horrors he’s witnessed and lived.
