One of the best!. Wonderfully written classic.

Loved it but finished reading wanting more.. The author withheld satisfaction between Mr Thorton and Margaret for so long that I expected a longer conclusion to the couples happy ending. I would have hoped to read the authors ending on how the coupled faired the rest of their lives together but it just kind of leaves you hanging. Otherwise the book is very interesting and engaging.

North and South. The book gave an insight into England during the industrial revolution period. The description of the characters made me feel as if I knew them. I have seen the BBC series which closely followed the book. I plan to read Elizabeth Gaskell's other books.

LOVE!!!!!. After watching the show in Netflix I had to read this. Couldn't put it down and stayed up late almost every night! The best combo of old fashioned elegance and thrilling romance

Good book too many typos.. I know it's free, but honestly, there were mistakes on practically every page. Very distracting.

The Great Battle Many of Us Face. I haven't always loved to read but now as I turn the pages in a book I find myself captivated and engrossed in the story of another's life. Sometimes I find myself in a drama built by Shakespeare, other days in a timeless piece by Dickens. Gaskell has her own way of placing you in a heartbreaking romance. Not a gothic romance but one filled with tribulations but enlightened thoughts about the struggles men have with power. Masters vs. workers. North vs. South. I believe this book won't disappoint.

LOVE THIS BOOK!. My favorite from beginning to end. Much better than the BBC series.

Elizabeth Gaskell wrote perfectly!. Written only 41 years after Pride and Prejudice, North and South did it justice. Elizabeth included two of the most difficult prejudices and she managed to find a way for both man and woman to find a beautiful respectful cooperating balance. Such a beautiful love story. And I love how Margaret fell in love. Love grew slowly and yet it hit her all at once. 💗 ❤️ I trust Elizabeth could have written a few more chapters on their love. Loved it!!!. Ms. Gaskell did a wonderful job with North and South. I saw the movie first, then found out it was a book. I loved it even more! It was so gratifying to be able to see the character's feelings for each other, especially Mr. Thornton. In many novels the male character is not so well developed. This definitely ranks with the works of Ms. Austen in my opinion.

Irresistible Romance. The story of Margaret Hale, displaced from her idyllic home in the south, to the dirty, industrial north and Mr.Thornton, mill ‘master’ and devoted son to as harsh a mother as any young woman could ever come across . It is a one sided romance as Mr.Thornton quickly falls in love with a young woman who feels him devoid of any feeling. It is beautifully written and very entertaining. I love it! If you have seen the television production you will enjoy reading new details and a further development of each character’s back story.

Beautiful Writing. I love the classic English in this book. Good story but really disappointing ending.

Favourite. Absolutely loved this book after watching the 2004 BBC adaption. I am just obsessed with the authors descriptions of the characters thoughts and feelings- they’re so real and relatable!

North and South. Absolutely splendid!

Excellent winter read. Totally engrossed for two days by this book, the plot twists and depth of the characterisation really makes it far better than any Austen or (dare I say) Bronte that I've read. There's also fantastic poetry excerpts before each chapter, my favourite being: “There's iron, they say, in all our blood, And a grain or two perhaps is good; But his, he makes me harshly feel, Has got a little too much of steel.” If you start this book, don't expect to stop...
