Apology by Plato Book Summary

The Apology is Plato's version of the speech given by Socrates as he defended himself in 399 BC against the charges of "corrupting the young, and by not believing in the gods in whom the city believes. The Apology begins with Socrates saying he does not know if the men of Athens (his jury) have been persuaded by his accusers. This first sentence is crucial to the theme of the entire speech. Indeed, in the Apology Socrates will suggest that philosophy begins with a sincere admission of ignorance; he later clarifies this, dramatically stating that whatever wisdom he has, comes from his knowledge that he knows nothing.

Translation. The Apology has always been a great book. This translation tho… was a little off.

Wow. Just wow.. Whether Socrates actually said this or not, this is a look into the mind of someone who values knowledge, truth, and justice over presumption, folly, and oppression, and who gives no f*cks about who that offends. It’s probably one of the earliest examples of a “Rousing Speech” in history.

Philosophy Lives FOREVER. The apology is a must read for those who prioritize truth and love above all.

A masterpiece. I could re-read this forever. Makes Christ look like an impudent teenager, and one wonder what the world could have been like under different circumstances

Great. It pass lalaland's standard.

May the content page be improved. Really moved by the speech. If where the main body starts can be marked or linked in the content page, it will be better.

Poor Edit. Innattention of the editors: the final page repeats.

Jason S.. Good

Interesting, Thought-Provoking. Introduction was a bit long, yet informative. Great discussions on virtue, wisdom, death, and the duties of men. Loved it.

Apology. Well written with a nice introduction

Review of Plato's Apology. Good translation. Good introduction. You can't beat the price. I read the book all the way through and did notice a couple of typos. Other than that, not bad.

Great. It pass my standard

What a drag!!. For a 150-page book I felt like I was reading this for the same timespan between when it was written to this very day. Still not as bad as the Iliad though, so I'll give it 2 stars instead of 1.

Brilliant discussion starting title. Everyone is either Due one,0r Owes one. And persons attitude about apologies either way is very telling about their character.

On the Apology. This short defense is most inspiring. It shows how wise and noble Socrates was even when being wrongly accused of corrupting the youth and denying the gods of the time, facing a penalty of death. Socrates spoke only the truth and avoided inciting emotion on the judges to shift their judgements in his favor. Socrates admitted that making the defense more “eloquent” could have saved him at the cost of his pristine image.

Insightful and moralistic. A deep look into how Socrates “inner voice” guided him through life and how truth is more important than death.

Apology. Was Socrates the author or Plato? In either case it deals with the great issues in life. Virtue versus advantage, crime against punishment, Adequate time to consider life and death issues. Acceptance of the law’s outcome and contemplation of life and death and the prospect of a long rest or opportunity to join the great minds of the past. Most of all a life which is not examined is not worth living. To face an enemy and defend truth as bravely as expected when baring arms.
