Incidents In the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs Book Summary

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
An Apple Books Classic edition.

Harriet Jacobs was born into slavery on a North Carolina estate, where she remained for the first six years of her life. Harriet and her mother served the mistress of the house, who taught Harriet to read and write and promised the enslaved girl freedom. That promise was broken when Harriet was sold into worse circumstances. She went on to have two children with a white man in the hopes of staving off the attentions of her cruel master, but when her plan backfired, Harriet decided to save her children by risking her own life—and running.

Published in 1861, Jacobs’ autobiography captured what life was like for a fugitive: always afraid, always on the move…for years. Hers is one of the first such accounts written by a woman, offering an intimate perspective on the dehumanizing horrors inflicted upon enslaved women. Jacobs’ autobiography helped mobilize many people to the growing abolitionist movement, and the book shows why Jacobs is considered not only an important abolitionist but also a feminist. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl deepens our understanding of slavery’s legacy.

Incredible, heart-wrenching tale. This should be required reading for all students. It’s really a travesty that stories like this are repressed in the south, sweeping our skeletons in the closet and bolting the door shut. To understand the mindset of African Americans today is to know their history, and reading this book is a good start.

Sacred. I am grateful to have had the chance to read about this courageous woman’s life. It’s unbelievable how this country started out and what she had to go through.

Must read!. I could not put this book down! It should be a must read for every high-schooler and above.

A portrait of fortitude and perseverance. An incredible read and insight into the experiences and mind of a woman brought up in slavery who fought for freedom for her and her children. A portrait of fortitude and perseverance. These first hand accounts and reported incidents retold may not be surprising to read at this point of knowing American history, but doesn’t make these occurrence any less heartbreaking to read. It’s not stories of inhumanity that make this a captivating read, but Ms, Jacobs mindset.

Inspired. To know of the endurance of people of color in a time when man though he should treat others as property is truly inspiring. God bless Ms. Linda.

A real page turner. I had the rare experience of not being able to put down this book. A joyful read, in every way. It really blew my mind and should be required reading of every school age kid, and even more so, the talking heads on tv who think racism is dead and blacks should just get over it. They must learn and respect this history. I thought I was well educated in the history of the civil war and slavery, but I feel I knew very little until I devoured this wonderful book.

Eye opening.. Why was this never taught in school? It is too shameful, that’s why. An amazing account of life for a slave girl. After having visited the south and it’s plantations and museums, I felt compelled to learn more. So glad I have read this, it changes my perspective greatly.

The true story of one woman's life in slavery and her emancipation. This is the true story of many lives under slavery Though sometimes hard to endure the terrible hardships and cruelties, nonetheless the lives of real people are revealed: their degradation and triumphs through the horrors of the Antebellum South

Incidents in a life of a slave girl. Enjoyed

Incidents in the life of a slave girl. A must read to fully understand the plight of the slaves...

Sad yet so beautiful. This is probably the greatest book I ever read concerning slave life during the 1800s. Well worth the read even if your not interested in slave history. This book really forces you to consider your own character and respect the amazing ability humans have to tolerate hardship and tribulation.

Incredibly powerful!. Slavery has always been a subject I feel incredibly sensitive to, I remember first learning about it in elementary school and crying every night, that people would actually treat people that way. It was a rude awakening to my very young heart. This should be required reading for every high school student, they need to know what REALLY happened and our US history books don't even come close. I thought I knew about slavery, this book made me realize I only had brushed the surface of what it really meant to be a slave. I could not put this book down, I felt as though I was right beside her and needed to see what was going to happen next. Enlightening to say the least, WOW!

Such a good read!. This book will open your eyes! The struggles this woman went thru was terrible.

Wow!. Amazing! Had to read this book for college & I would definitely read it again in my free time. Best book I have read all semester.

INCIDENTS IN THE LIFE OF A SLAVE GIRL. This is a very good biography written by the author who was a slave girl in the 1800's. It gave me a good picture of what the slaves went through as "being owned" by white plantation owners. It is very sad in that the author had to become a fugitive and live in seclusion for 7 years of her life. It also gives a good picture of her raising her two children and how she got herself and her children free of slavery. A very good read and eye-opening.

Great read.. Absolutely amazing.

Great writing sad story. Great read. I’ve read several similar narratives, and they are absolutely painful to read. It really shows the reality of the world we live in. I would suggest that everyone read these first hand accounts from the slaves themselves. If nothing is gained but a conscience thought the author has succeeded.

Soo interesting and educational at one time.. I couldn’t put this book down.

AMAZING BOOK!!. I usually never leave reviews but after reading this book (which I determinedly read every single day until finished) I have to say I simply couldn't put it down!! Linda was such a strong woman who simply wanted what we all today may take for granted without realizing....Freedom.

First hand records of slavery’s ugly face and hearts of gold. Emotional, it shows the glimpses in to the life of slavery. She wrote her life and painted pictures of external and internal struggles, oppressions, endurance, etc..,

Extrodinary Woman. What a shame our Founding Fathers did not outlaw the institution of Slavery after the Revolutionary War. The institution of Slavery will forever be a stain on the Red, White, and Blue. This story was a truly amazing first hand account of the horrors people had to endure under this evil institution.

Must-Read. As a young Black woman of only 26, it was continuously difficult for me to accept that the a counts of this book are not works of Fiction. The book is an excellent and unadulterated account of the tragedy of Slavery. I even shed tears...how often does a book make you cry??? So glad that I read this, finally. Do yourself a service, of any race or any sex, READ THIS BOOK.

POV from an Black American Woman. An inspirational and timeless story about womanhood, strength, courage, and determination.

Great Book. I struggled to follow the author on certain parts but overall it was a good read.

Incidences of a slave girl.. I wish I could speak to the author. Reading this book makes me wish I could somehow convey to the black race that not all whites hate blacks. I wish there is someway to erase the history of our country not only concerning black history but also our history concerning Indian History. My only solace is that God in in control. Faithful and Just. And He will recompense His judgement in His time.

An important view into history. If there is one lesson to be learned from this story, it should be that government always seeks to protect those in power. Your freedom is the most important right that you have, and we must all be wary of any law, statute, or regulation that seeks to limit our freedom.

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. I found the stories of Linda's life to be fascinating. I have always thought that slavery was unjust. Thank God that there were people to believe in her & help her in her pursuit of freedom. It was a very good read!

Riveting and heartrending. What a thoroughly deplorable institution slavery was and is. The very idea of one person owning another makes my stomach roil. God created all men in his image. Nowhere in the Bible does it say one color of skin is more worthy of freedom than another. Thank you for sharing your story, I imagine the telling came at great emotional cost.

Heart wrenching but beautiful story. I had this book among a few others to chose from for an assignment and expected to choose anything but this one assuming everyone would choose it but it was the most interesting. I am forever changed by this story! I have never sobbed so outwardly while reading a book before. Some happy tears as well' I highly recommend this book to anyone,

Wow. We all know slavery was bad….but going through her story with her was mind blowing. I think this should be read as part of history classes. It was literally human trafficking, unbelievable.

Sad commentary Re: Slaveholders. Awesome book! Sad stories. Interesting that it is true history from a town I’m quite familiar. Inspirational.

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Powerful, heart-crushing, and utterly truthful book.

Incidents in the life of a slave girl.. Very interesting but have read several books in this genre. It could have been a little more exciting. Thank you

Great Read!. This recount of a slave’s experience from slavery to freedom is an easy read. Though I have read much worse recollections, I must admit the stories were heart wrenching. To stay in hiding for 7 years in a small space not big enough for one to turn or stand upright is unimaginable. To hear of stories where people were deceived regarding what slavery was and then passing laws to catch and return runaway slaves: it’s disheartening. Why would people run away from something that is soo good and comfortable? In retrospect, I believe it is easier to drink from a cup with sweet water than bitter water. It is easier to believe something you know and can imagine than something so perverse, so horrible that your imagination is afraid to tread.

An amazing and emotional story of truth…. “Let every colored man and woman do this, and eventually we shall cease to be trampled under foot by our oppressors.” Excerpt From Incidents In the Life of a Slave Girl That excerpt was from Harriet, standing up for what she believed. This autobiography of her life is amazing (not the slavery). Her life in what she fought for, FREEDOM, is amazing. She was a very strong woman, she went through a lot. She was born into slavery but she was not mistreated in her early childhood but once she was sold to a new master everything changed. She was sexualizes and had hatred and jealousy put upon her from her new master and mistress. She sacrificed seven years of her life in confinement for the freedom of herself and her children and eventually it was done. Everyone should read a book, any book by an enslaved person to get a better understanding in what the world was like and to really see what slaves went through.

Pretty good. I enjoyed it!. It's a pretty good book, but I have read better. It is extremely interesting and I enjoy it. The only problem I have with this book is that the language is kind of confusing. But, it was written a long time ago, so I can't complain. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!

Eye opener. What better way to learn a history than from the mind of somebody who lived it

We Will Never Forget!. How could a human do these things to another?! The heart of man especially the so called civilised people can be dark and we still see that darkness everywhere today!
