Brain on Fire by Susannah Cahalan Book Summary

NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE STARRING CHLOË GRACE MORETZ

A “captivating” (The New York Times Book Review), award-winning memoir and instant New York Times bestseller that goes far beyond its riveting medical mystery, Brain on Fire is a powerful account of one woman’s struggle to recapture her identity.

When twenty-four-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up alone in a hospital room, strapped to her bed and unable to move or speak, she had no memory of how she’d gotten there. Days earlier, she had been on the threshold of a new, adult life: at the beginning of her first serious relationship and a promising career at a major New York newspaper. Now she was labeled as violent, psychotic, a flight risk. What happened?

In an “unforgettable” (Elle), “stunningly brave” (NPR), and breathtaking narrative, Susannah tells the astonishing true story of her descent into madness, her family’s inspiring faith in her, and the lifesaving diagnosis that almost didn’t happen. “A fascinating look at the disease that…could have cost this vibrant, vital young woman her life” (People), Brain on Fire is an unforgettable exploration of memory and identity, faith and love, and a profoundly compelling tale of survival and perseverance.

Author put into words what I still can not. As a person diagnosed for over 20 years as bipolar I was prescribed too many psychiatric medications to list, experienced too much mental anguish to revisit, and underwent over 40 electro convulsive therapy sessions that may or may not be contributing factors to my splotchy memory. Then, 9 years ago i was diagnosed as having Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis and hoped my thyroidectomy 6 years ago would put an end to the psychiatric symptoms. The first 6 weeks post surgery were like a miracle and I believed the surgery had put an end my body attacking itself. I had my last psychiatric hospitalization 4 years ago and at that point it was felt by both my Psychopharmacologist (who had treated me for nearly 20 years) and my endocrinologist that all the acute psych symptoms I had were from Autoimmune Hashimoto's encephalopathy. I had prednisone stocked in my arsenal to take at the earliest signs of recurring psychosis to prevent a repeated episode. I have not had to take the prednisone. My autoimmune disease attacks my body still but my brain seems to be safer for now. My thought process is slowed, word retrieval sometimes a frustrating if not amusing. Math is something I still feel incapable of. This book is the first book I have read in over a year and a half. I had a hard time putting it down. The story was not mine but was close enough to bring back memories I had thought I lost. Thank you Ms. Cahalan for speaking for many who can not. At a time when our country truly needs to discuss The Mental Health Situation as it pertains to the patient, the researcher, and the public, I am grateful to you for allowing all the opportunity to read about your experience. Thank you for helping break the stigma! I will be recommending your book to whoever will listen!

“her brain is quite literally on fire”. i loved reading this book. it was so interesting to see what it was like inside of the mind. it brought wonders to this illness and 🤯. i felt like i was there with her the whole time going through this with her.

OK, OK...We Get It.. Your family is wealthy. Your family is rich. Your family is sophisticated. Your family is well-off. Your family is connected. Blah, blah, blah. These repetitive reminders come off as snobby and divert from the storyline, bogging down what could've been a very interesting read.

Exhilerating, Inspriing, Facinating. This book was recommended to me by a proffesor because I study neuroscience. Not only was Susannah’s story gripping and insightfuil, it solidified my choice to study medicine. I hope to be as wonderful a physician as Najjar and Dalmau. Susannah’s writing was amazing and I became engrossed in the narrative. The best non-fiction narrative book I have read.

Wonderful Read!. Being a former patient of a mistaken brain-related diagnosis, I really enjoyed this book. The medical concepts are well-described and written in terms readers will grasp, and her writing style draws you in from the very beginning. It's amazing that this is a true story- just incredible!

Brain on Fire. Absolutely amazing! A must read!

Brain on Fire. Great read! Wow

Beutiful. Amazing look at the mind and a story of love

Brain on fire. Very interesting read. Very informative a d well written. Any one interested in the medical field should read it.

Amazing!. I found myself reading at 3am. Every doctor should read this book. If you're into a good book and like science this is a perfect book for you. I really appreciated the science in the book, not only an amazing story but I learned a lot more than expected. Great book!!

Blah. Hard to keep ones attention with such a monotonous storyline. However, impressive the author was able to accomplish articulating such a medically diagnostic journal after losing her mental capacity. But, it's just that- a medical journal recounting a time she doesn't remember.

Must read!. Amazing book.

Brain On Fire. What a wonderful book. It really gives you insight on illnesses that have taken the lives of many people. It is a really moving story and I'm glad that she had a chance to write this book. This book gives an understanding of the lives of people who live with mental illnesses and the people who have been misdiagnosed. I definitely recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

Amazing. I’ve always been fascinated by stories like this and this one is hands down my favorite.

Loved it.. Captivating, and informative. And heartbreaking and joyous at points. Read it in 2 days, couldn't put it downs Really makes you think.

Wow!!. What an incredible story. Great read, hard to put down.

Great read. A mix of medical mystery and a personal account of a brave young woman

Brain on Fire. Stayed up all night reading this book! Great insight into what having a mental illness would be like and a surprising medical reason for the source of the disease. Leaves on wondering how many other mental conditions have an underlying physical source.

Amazing Story. I could not put this down!

Great book. Very interesting! We all need to be made aware of this rare but frightening disease. The author is very honest and open in her descriptions of herself, her family and the terrible ordeal she went through. The book is well written and well organized- a testament to the authors recovery. Thank you for taking the time to share this story!

auto immune disease. Well written; the story captured my interest from start to finish.

Awestruck.. Brain on fire is am intriguing journey through a women's loss of reality, and ultimately her life. I could not put the book down in fear that the next chapters would be better than the last, or that much more information would be revealed. This story is far more than inspiring and i applaud Susannah Cahalan for making her psychosis so public. Everyone should read this book; it appeals to all aspects of life and professions. I applaud all those involved in this story for their emotional strength. I am still in awe and buried in the book's memorizing paragraphs and illustrations.

Brain on Fire. This book was recommended to me by a psychiatrist I met at the dog park. I read everything I can find on mental illnesses to help me better understand my daughter’s diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. Armed with this new information we have another appointment scheduled with a neurologist. And for the first time I have some hope. Thank you for writing this book!

Moving and Thoughtful. This book is an enchanting memoir of a girls lost month. We all have ailments that don't quite match up to what our doctors have told us. Sweating wrists as nervousness or seizures as alcohol withdrawal; neither make sense. This book proves that sometimes diagnosis' are wrong but most doctors are curious and will help figure out the ailment. They did, in fact, go to school hoping to help mankind. Never assume what is happening with another person. Be a friend, be compassionate and remember you don't know the story behind the person you call a friend. Well written!

Brain on fire. This book was a wonderful read on a girls life that overcame many obstacles with her sickness but with the help of her wonderful doctors and family and her determination to get well she did it

Brain on Fire. This is an excellent book. This young woman's bravery in sharing her story is incredible. I am a nurse and reading about her disease from her perspective gives amazing insight. This book is wonderful.

Incredible. A fantastic read that rates in my top 3 books this year. A must read!

AE in recovery. This book was like therapy for me. It helped me realize that I’m not alone and also gave me insight into the disease Autoimmune Encephalitis. I appreciate Susannah for telling her story and allowing us to be apart of her journey. As I continue my recovery, I will remember this book and all the things I have highlighted.

Brain on fire. Great read. Being a nurse, I think people in the medical field will enjoy.

Brain on Fire. Fascinating read. A journey into a women's descent into an illness that was literally driving this young women crazy. It gives hope to all those who have yet to have a name for what they are suffering from.

Couldn't put it down. Read it in 3 days. This story was incredible. She's a great writer and I have never heard of what she suffered from. Enlightening and so thankful she recovered.

Couldn't put it down. I read a lot. I have yet to be moved to wire a review, but I just couldn't put this book down. Literally lost sleep when I planned to read a chapter or 2 before bed and ended up reading well into the night. For a book I picked out in a whim, this was a good read.

Couldn't put it down!. Very fascinating to read. She did a marvelous job narrating her story in an emotionally honest way.

A++. Very good book! This is an extremely talented writer!! I'm glad the world got this woman back to share her awesome gift of writing.

Intriguing, insightful, and a downright great read. This book is so well written and is absolutely intriguing. As a healthcare provider, it is so interesting to get a detailed account of a neurologically impaired patients point of view. I highly recommend (and have to any one who will listen) this book to anyone who has known anyone with a neurological illness or critical medical encounter. Thanks to the author for sharing herself in such an intimate and well researched manner. GREAT BOOK!!

CSU. No

It's a hit. Mesmerizing. I knew from the moment I read it that it needed to made into a movie. And now it is. Cheers!

Truthful. I had this illness for 13 months starting in 1967 and ending in Jan 1968, while I was pregnant the whole time I was given every test including truth serum, tied to the hospital bed for 30 days, put on medication, which I still take today. No problems since then, and baby is now 51. Thank you for your story.

Amazing and Brilliant. This book is one of the most amazing and riveting books I have ever read. As a healthcare professional and bipolar patient, I know first hand the courage it takes to come forward with a personal story and fight to own your life back when you are in the trenches of mental illness. This is a book that had me hooked for hours at a time and whose end I saw faster than any other of its kind.

Brain on Fire. Amazing... I couldn't put this book down. Susannah brings you through her experience as if it were happening to someone you knew. Incredibly frightening to think that this could happen to anyone...

Brain on Fire. Could not put it down. Inspiring. You will not be disappointed.

Brain on Fire. Being a nurse for 30 years I now think of the many patients I have taken care of over the years and wonder how many of them were misdiagnosed. Thank you for getting the word out to the medical profession so that more people can be helped and not lost in the system. You are an amazing person with an amazing story that has been told in a way that anyone can understand. A must read for all health care workers.

Informative and scary tale!. Read this book after my nephew was diagnosed! In first few days is Ivig treatments now! Thankful for her and the doctors who have provided a voice for all who are suffering!!

Brain on Fire. Fascinating page turner that will change your life. Thank you SC for sharing your story and saving many other lives in doing so.

Mature, real-life drama. Loved this book. Fabulous integration of drama and science.

Fascinating. This book was a wonderful read, well written, great information, and a fascinating although scary story. I am really happy Susannah shared her story with the world.

Great read. Amazingly captivating read! Cahalan intricately describes the science of her disease while creating an emotional roller coaster of a story. Highly recommended.

Brain on fire. Awesome book. Started it and could not put it down till it was done. I hope that it gets the word out to all Health Professionals to keep an open mind and stay current.

Couldn't put it down. Written in clear, dynamic prose, Brain on Fire is a great read on many levels. First off, it's a riveting story with a time-honoured dramatic arc, the power of which is undeniable. On top of that, it's a spell-binding detective story, a deeply personal memoir, and a cautionary tale about science and medicine. The reader takes away a hefty dose of new awareness and knowledge, delivered in a highly engaging and entertaining package. At times harrowing, funny and uplifting, Brain on Fire is chock-full of heroes and crucial moments that kept me turning pages and cheering for the author throughout her journey.
