Boring. I read a lot of historical romances but this book was just boring. It seemed nonsensical to spend so much time to build what happened to the main character. After a few chapters I quit reading because it just made no sense and I did not enjoy the plot. I am glad it was free.

A Gem!. Positively one of the very best novels I have read in months! Serena and Hugo's love story is beautifully poignant. A MUST read!

Cat and Mouse Game. Nicely presented, woman wronged, another man told to clean the matter up, and sparks develop. Wonderfully depicted Victorian London, high sense of manners, interesting characters. Not terrific but far from a waste of time.

Great Novella. This was a great novella, and the epilogue makes me want to purchase the next books in the series. I really don't understand why a previous reviewer found this book boring. I started it, and didn't put it down until I was finished. I liked the interaction between the two main characters, and their love scene was sweet with just the right amount of spice. I recommend this book.

Not the usual romance. The sequel should be great

Loved it.. I rarely write reviews, but felt it was my duty to let you know how good this was. I rarely purchase follow up books, but will be looking to get my hands on the next book as soon as I hit submit on this. :)

Not the typical romance.. This was a very interesting read. I couldn't put it down. I loved that the main characters were the governess and a man of business. That the duke was not the hero. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series.

Finally!. It's very rare for me to rate and write reviews for the books I've finished reading and when I do it's because they were, in my mind, worth the effort. Even then, it's even more rare for me to rate a book with 5 stars. Having said that, my thoughts about this book are apparent. I loved it & didn't put it down until I was finished! I fell in love with Hugo right along with Serena and her golden, strong personality commanded my respect from the beginning. Hugo's honesty and forthrightness was refreshing yet demanded respect as well. This book was the perfect length, didn't leave me confused or lacking, and ended just right! Finally a book that was good enough to actually finish!

Because non-Peers fall in love too!. This was just a perfect story for a rainy day. Not saccharine or implausible but romantic nonetheless. The H&h are ordinary people in looks and station who make a connection and recognize it without making undue fuss and find their HEA on normal, human scale terms indifferent to titles or exorbitant fortunes. Their fortune is having found each other & taken the chance that fate has offered. Lovely!

Can't wait for the rest.... ...of the series. This one was written as a prequel to a new series and even though it was short, it was still really good. Definitely recommend it.

Give it a try!. I'm always a bit meh at attraction at first sight, but the twists on it are good here. Definitely worthwhile, & samples for two others at the end have ensured I've grabbed a novella. Huzzah!

Fabulous writing!. The title doesn't tell you what's in store: a fresh, intelligent and heart-warming approach to historical romance. The kind of story that intrigues and moves on past tired cliché to create exciting and believable characters and plot. I particularly like a strong, intelligent heroine who stands up for herself. The Governess Affair. E book 9/10 Regency, but with witty dialogue and real emotion. Hugo is the son of a blacksmith who dreams of building an empire for himself and in memory of the sacrifice of his dead motber. He works for the Duke of Clearmont, who threatened a virgin governess with ruin if she screamed, and got her pregnant. She is smart and clever, and when Hugo is told lies and told to get rid of her, he finds her mind irresistable. He marries her to give the baby a father, and since she was raped, she gives her control in their sexual play. Lovely.

Intriguing. I like a book that has a little extra spin.. as does this. Didn’t put it down until the end. Excellent hot scenes too.

The Governess Affair. Great book, I enjoy the dialogue, the humour and the sensitive and well developed characters. It is a book that can be read many times over and still find pleasure in doing so.

Loved it. I absolutely love Courtney Milan, one of my favourite romance authors.

Fave romance author. I have loved all of Milan's novels. Her heroines are bold and beautiful while her heroes are thrilling and respectful. I can see myself actually looking up to her thoughtful characters. Milan incorporates moral discussions of then and now into each of her rich stories. This is one author I'd like to meet in real life after getting to know in her writing.

Delightful prequel. I read this after reading the Duchess War, it really didn't matter. Delightful read, the author has the historical romance genre down pat 👍👍

Great novella. One of the best novellas out there. Many authors can’t forge a connection between two characters in such a short amount of time. Milan can.

Good read. I loved it! Beautifully done

A Winner. I am a voracious reader and have read dozens and dozens of both free and paid ebooks. So many of them are so bad that I can't even finish them. This book, however, was a very pleasant surprise and I highly recommend it. Although it is a shorter story, the author has done an excellent job. The characters are well developed and show growth, the plot is interesting and the dialogue appropriate and believable. I highly recommend this story. You won't be disappointed.

Beautifully written. This was the first book I read from this author. The characters are so real and have a real depth to them. I cried when they cried and was happy for them when the story had a happy ending.

Bravo!. I loved this story. Normally I steer clear of the shorter works of free fiction; experience has taught me that if the author couldn't make her material into an actual, full-length story, there isn't enough there to be worth reading. Generally the full-length ones aren't worth reading either, but I've ploughed through a good number of them, hoping for a few crumbs of enjoyment. Voracious readers can't be too picky. I tried this one despite that conviction - and I absolutely loved it. More: I found myself savouring it, automatically turning a page back to reread what I had just read, so that I could enjoy it again before continuing. The main characters and the dialogue are delightful, and the story unfolds at a controlled pace that is completely satisfying. Yay! My only complaint is that it'll be a long, long time before I come across another that I like as well as this one. The bar has been lifted... expectations have been raised... darn it.

Her story is not overloaded with unnecessary historical detail, the plots carry you along and the characters are quickly liked or hated., and through all the injustice and broken heartedness, you really want love to win.
