The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness by Timothy Keller Book Summary

‘What are the marks of a supernaturally changed heart?’

This is one of the questions the Apostle Paul addresses as he writes to the church in Corinth. He’s not after some superficial outward tinkering, but instead a deep–rooted, life–altering change that takes place on the inside. In an age where pleasing people, puffing up your ego and building your résumé are seen as the methods to ‘make it’, the Apostle Paul calls us to find true rest in blessed self–forgetfulness.
In this short and punchy book, best–selling author Timothy Keller, shows that gospel–humility means we can stop connecting every experience, every conversation with ourselves and can thus be free from self–condemnation. A truly gospel–humble person is not a self–hating person or a self–loving person, but a self–forgetful person.

This freedom can be yours…

Great On Our Identity in Christ. I liked this book so much that I bought a hard copy for every member of my family. It explains clearly why we should not be enslaved to the opinions of others or our own twisted perception of ourselves. Only in Jesus do we truly find acceptance.

Short but poeerful. I need to read this once a month to be reminded of what true humility is!

Thoughtful. A short read that challenges your ideas about self-esteem and how one views him or herself. I recognized a lot of these traps and have a framework to start pushing back on these faulty ideals.

Best book ever. It breaks everything down to the least common denominator

The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness. Wonderful book, very helpful, it will truly open your eyes to walk in Godly humility.

Answers the self-esteem issue. I am exhausted waiting for that feeling that I was enough. But it was never about me and I already have that stamp of being approved. Now I understand.

Perfectly titled.. I’ve just read probably the best book on the real truth in Romans 8:1 and other like scriptures in this small book Tim Keller has dissected and written on the simplicity that is in Christ - Wonderful!!! The freedom that is in Christ!! Thank you!!! Thomas E Collins. M

Christian Humility and the Freedom is gives. Amazing book. Do you have low self-esteem? Read this book. Prideful? Read this book. Too self absorb? Read this book. Always comparing yourself with others...well, you get the idea. This is a little book on true gospel humility as explained by the Apostle Paul. It does not matter what others think of me. It does not matter what I even think of me. How so? Read the book.

Another Solid Resource From Keller. I downloaded this book onto my school-purchased iPhone for several reasons: 1. Tim Keller - I enjoyed reading The Prodigal God, watching The Gospel of Life, and listening to numerous sermon clips and interviews of his. 2. The Subtitle - Sometimes I struggle finding joy in tasks that God has required me to do, but I want to rejoice always. 3. Cost - The book was under a buck so I couldn't pass it up. The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness consists of four short chapters, and I was able to finish the book on a bus ride home from work. Chapter one is called The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness, chapter two is entitled The Natural Condition Of The Human Ego, chapter three is The Transformed View Of Self, and the final chapter is How To Get That Transformed View Of Self. Chapter one opens up with two immensely important questions: 1. "What are the marks of a heart that has been radically changed by the grace of God?" 2. "If we trust in Christ, what should our hearts be like?" In The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness, Pastor Keller focuses on a section of Paul's first letter to the Corinthians: 1 Cor. 3:21-4:7. In this passage we are shown that the church in Corinth is divided due to pride and boasting. Like the Corinthians, we often look at ourselves too highly. This is something I have done all too frequently and something I continue to battle. Additionally, many people are on the other side of the spectrum and feel they suffer from a low self-esteem. We help people to combat this by telling them they are somebody; however, this is totally the wrong approach. We cannot build ourselves up by meeting our own standards or society's standards. This doesn't work. Apart from Christ, we will never be satisfied with ourselves. Our ego always desires more, and we get hurt in the process. We constantly desire to accomplish more in order to feel like we're somebody important. God expects us to deny ourselves and look to Him. God is to be our audience, not the world. We must seek to bring attention to our Awesome God and not to ourselves. The only way we can do this is by looking to the finished work of Christ on the cross. It is He who declares us innocent so we can live this life full of joy and be prepared for a life of pure joy in Heaven. If you are looking for a quick read that is biblically sound, I recommend Keller's book to you. Pastor Keller preaches to a few thousand intellectuals in Manhattan every Sunday yet his book can be understood by those new to the faith. The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness does not use complex theological terms, and deep thoughts and discussions should result from reading the book. Although I still struggle to find joy in some daily tasks, reading Keller's book is a great reminder of how I should be thinking. At the back of the book you will find a few thoughts and questions for reflection, end notes, and a list of Keller's books.

Radically incredible. I am seminary educated, ordained and been a Christ following pastor for over a decade. I have never heard nor ought about this - just 2 hours ago I was encouraging the modern self-esteem philosophy, as Keller calls it, totally missing the mark clearly set in this pamphlet's message. Like Prodigal God, every Christ follower who wants to think Biblically must read, meditate, discuss and seek to follow both Paul and Keller's words here. Prophetic. Radical. Incredible. I can only pray God develops this mind- and heart set in me and those I come in contact with.

Wonderful!. How easy it is to get off track! Thank you Father!

Must read. I am someone who is in front of others frequently. I struggle with what others think about me all time. I find myself trying to gain others approval and get their words of affirmation to make myself feel better. This is a must read for anyone. It literally took me 30 minutes and it changed my perspective on my pride, ego, and self-esteem. I'm so thankful that God is so good and he is the only one who can fill the God shaped hole in my heart. Please, please, please pick this book up and let God change your prospective!

Awesome!!. Awesome!!!

Excellent analysis. What a treasure for people to find. We do not need to be enslaved to the flesh, the Self, the ego. Instead, we can be freed from self. We can choose to live a life that is not bound to how high or low we view ourselves. Instead, we we fill ourselves with love for others, what is called self-forgetfulness. We don’t less of ourselves, we think of ourselves less.

Quick and powerful. Please read this short read and powerful reflection, then take a look around and ask ourselves, why are we missing this great gift given to us by Christ. What would this world look like if we lived the verdict not the performance? Tim Keller is quickly becoming my favorite faith author!

Great work. This is a book, if someone desires true freedom, needs to read.

Great-short-helpful-read. This little book is so helpful to all of us who breath American culture. If your in it you sometimes can't tell you are until a book like this pulls you out for a moment. Gospel application at its finest! I'll read it again and buy copies for others!

Sweet, True, And Timely. Sweet, True, And Timely

Artist. Any Christian struggling with self worth or value should definitely read this book. Not only does it point out the root of the issue but it also helps your overcome yourself in everyday environments.

Brilliant!. How can you not love Tim Keller's books. The Freedom of Sel-Forgetfulness is a short book packed with life changing truths that both believer and someone kicking the tires of Christianity can be encouraged and challenged by. "Gospel-humility is not thinking more or less of myself,, it is thinking of myself less." Brilliant! Thanks again Dr. Keller!!

The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness. Experience a deep taste of the Gospel and its power to free you from having to prove yourself each day to others and to yourself.

Helpful Book. I have often felt trapped in the endless loop of my mind, either in self-flogging or in overweening pride. When my mind/ego is “full of scorpions,” I will review the passage in Corinthians and Keller’s book.

Great reminder. Short book with a great reminder of Romans 8:1

The power of *grace*. This is a such beautiful and liberating book! Timothy Keller is a blessing to many people and his teachings NEVER disappoint. Read this if you want to be free from people's critics, even your own.

Good Read. This is a short, yet thought-provoking book. I have read it multiple times. I highly recommend it.

Our counterintuitive Lord.. The only philosophy or religion that isn't "works based" and this is how we know it is from God. In life performance leads to the verdict but in Christ the verdict inspires the performance. This counterintuitive model is unique in history. Once again Tim Keller nails it succinctly and eloquently. “Do you realize that it is only in the gospel of Jesus Christ that you get the verdict before the performance? The atheist might say that they get their self-image from being a good person. They are a good person and they hope that eventually they will get a verdict that confirms that they are a good person. Performance leads to the verdict. For the Buddhist too, performance leads to the verdict. If you are a Muslim, performance leads to the verdict. All this means that every day, you are in the courtroom, every day you are on trial. That is the problem. But Paul is saying that in Christianity, the verdict leads to performance” Excerpt From: Keller, Timothy. “The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness.”

This is a wonderful short study of pride, ego and beyond.. I love reading Dr. Keller's books and would really like to see more short works like this one. This study of pride and ego is discussed through the lens of 1 Corinthians 3:22-4:7. As with all his work, Dr. Keller manges to take dense theology and bring it forward to address modern challenges for the thoughtful Christian. This is a wonderful book previous readers of his works will enjoy, but it's also a great introduction for, those who have not read his work.

Revealing. I didn't know what to expect from such a small pamphlet but it's punchy style and preciseness of text has inspired and excited me. I am persuaded to seek my true self esteem in the stillness and peace of Gods word. Thank you for guiding me.

Great and to the Point. A fresh reveal and insight to a rooted issue so many struggle with

Encouraging stuff. Really pulled me out of a hole!

The Freedom of Self-forgetfulness. Excellent and insightful. What every Christian needs to learn to live a truly gospel-filled life.

Freedom through revelation. If we can truly apprehend the core message of this book, and find ourselves living in the reality of it day by day, we will be truly liberated. What people think of us is not important. What we think of ourselves is not important. What the Lord Jesus Christ thinks is paramount; and He died for our sin, set us free from guilt, cleaned us up and gave us a new life (in Him). We are free to be who He called us to be. This is a great read, and very accessible.

Short bread, the best kind of bread. Great read! It's short and sweet but nourishing. Well worth the price.

An excellent read. Christians should read this an practice it.

Wow. Very challenging!

Journey to discover new and true identity. A short read, but imparts a lot of wisdom. Recommended to me by my mentor and makes me reflects upon my goals in life. In some ways, I can identify with Madonna that was illustrated in the book - a need to pursue greater things, but losing sight of what truly matters.

A beautiful book that showcases the heart of Christian living. I love this book. It is easy to read in one sitting and is a valuable reminder of the incredible freedom from judgment that is the birthright of everyone who trusts in Christ.
