Wild (Oprah's Book Club 2.0 Digital Edition) by Cheryl Strayed Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an eleven-hundred-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe—and built her back up again.

At twenty-two, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother’s death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life. With no experience or training, driven only by blind will, she would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State—and she would do it alone.

Told with suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

Inspired me to begin riding my bike again! Great read!. .

the Journey of a Lifetime. Every step, every loss, every decision, every joy felt as if it were my own. Like so much in our human story, Cheryl's journey was both metaphor and extremely, literally, and sometimes painfully real. I dreamed of the PCT after reading Wild late at night, not wanting to part company and leave her alone by herself in the wilderness (although she often chose that aloneness, I did not) and woke up with sore feet. When I write my memoir, I aspire to the immediacy, vividness, and unpretentious truth that Cheryl conveys and evokes in this amazing, inspiring journey of self-knowing and truth telling. Thanks, Cheryl for allowing me to accompany you through every step, every loss, every decision, every joy. I look forward to meeting you at the San Miguel Writers' Conference in February 2013! - Aysha Griffin

Loved it!. Cheryl has a way of capturing you into the story as if you were walking side by side with her through her remarkable story of her summer on the PCT! I would recommend to anyone looking to read and feel a story of the soul! Outstanding love it!

Book's wonderful, content is a problem. My review is not related to the book but about the downloaded content. The last 6 to 10 pages of each chapter is not there. Those pages are duplicate of the last available page. Very frustrating. The last book I downloaded, Girl Gone, had the same problem but when changing the iPad position the pages appeared. With this book that didn't work. Hugely disappointed.

cdalg906. I couldn't get enough of this book! It was difficult to put down from beginning to end. Loved it!

Great book - did not want it to end. This story, of tragedy, journey, adventure, and development of the spirit and soul, was beautifully written. There is an honesty in the voice of the author, as well as a beautifully descriptive writing style. Enjoyed the Oprah's book club edition as well.

Techical issues. Im loving the book but having the same problem that other users seem to be having. Missing pages or repeating pages. Very frustrating!

Pass this one up. Sometimes I dislike a character but can still enjoy a story about them but not this time. I especially didn't like it when she wrote about wanting to have sex with the nurse attending to her mom at her death bed. I give her points for honesty but there's no remarkable story here.

Entertaining Journey. Strayed's book is both a physical and spiritual journey. Her writing is easy, her flashbacks to the life that brought her to hiking the Pacific Coast Trail (with no prior experience) well timed, logically placed, and told with a balance between detachment and emotion that keeps the reader focused on the process she undergoes to figure out who she is rather than dwelling on that past. Strayed writes well about the people she meets, the obstacles she faces, and the life she been living that threatened to overwhelm her. Her descriptions are excellent and she captures the uniqueness of those who populated her world - both past and on the trail. The one flaw of the book was that some of the metaphors of her journey were overdone or obvious. Despite this, I found I admired her for taking such a step to reorient herself in life.

Inspiration. Great tale of a woman's journey of finding herself.

excellent book w/issues. I loved this book even when I wanted to strangle the author for her self-destructiveness. My frustration was with the ebook itself. I purchased the Oprah edition. I enjoyed Oprah's insights and thoughts and the book club questions, but so many lines were missing within the book, especially at the end of chapters where they were most important. The end of the book was missing (the last few sentences). Very disappointing. I feel like I need to get another copy to read the parts I've missed. This has not been my experience with ebooks or iBook library before. Makes me leary.

Wild. If you only read one book this year let it be this book. I was so sad when the journey ended. Christel Chesney

Great.. This book reminded me of the beauty and cruelty of nature.

WOW!!. I just finished reading this book and it was so amazing! I felt the author pain, happiness, love, loss, despair and joy in every page in this book! I am soooo happ I read it and can't recommend it more! Unbelievible journey on a young women quest to fix herself!!! Loves it

Yes, it's engrossing. Thanks for sharing your life and writings this. Hope to meet you in person during your book Signing in Washington State.

Wild. Enjoyed this book so much I'm liable to get a backpack and set off for the PCT!

End of chapters end mid sentence. Well written book. While no fault of the author, after reading 5 chapters 3 have ended mid sentence. What's up Apple? If this continues I want a refund.

Mesmerizing. I could not put it down. Her descriptions of her life, her family, the trail and the people she met along the way were wonderful. I am so glad I had the opportunity to get to know Cheryl through reading this book about her glorious journey.

Amazing. Amazing and inspirational. Raw and real. An amazing story and journey. Beautiful writing.

Makes you want to hike PCT. I’ve seen the movie but decided I needed to read the book. This is a really neat book and makes you feel like your there hiking the PCT as well.....

Exceptional. I love this book.

Bugs!. Regret purchasing the Oprah version. Each time there is a highlight/note from Oprah, the page freezes and it is impossible to go to the next page. I am missing entire portions of the book, as I can only jump to the next chapter (after closing and restarting). VERY disappointed. Never again will I purchase an Oprah edition.

Safe for guys too Read. Good read. I was worried this was going to be too touchy feely, but it kept my attention. Good blend of trail talk and background adventure. I mistakenly bought the oprah version which was annoying. I recommend purchasing the non-Oprah version and figure it out yourself unless your a fan.

Wild. Good not excellent- completely as you would expect the story to unfold

Wild. Absolutely without a doubt amazing story. Compelling universal message for those of us who have been damaged by others. I so understood this story . Bravo!

Wish books had ratings. I didn't realize I would need to worry about an Oprah book club book having foul and crass language. Nor did it cross my mind to worry about reading about sexual encounters or a casualness towards abortion. While I do recognize the value of the author's experiences and the profound impact hiking the PCT had for her in her life, I would have not read this book had I known more of the content. This is why I wish that books had similar ratings as to movies, so I would know when to steer clear of them.

Excellent. Don't miss this one....great!

Not the full edition. I just finished this book, and the book itself is great. But don't buy the Oprah's book club edition. There are highlighted notes throughout the book from Oprah which you cant turn off, and some of the chapters broke off abruptly, I have not idea how much i missed because of this glitch.

Feel ripped off. I regret buying the Oprah's book club edition. Every time I come across a highlighted section, the page continues to repeat itself and so I'm unable to read the next passage. This glitch is causing me to miss unknown amounts of the chapters which is really frustrating. Never will I buy the Oprah version again.

Wild. It is rare for me to read a book more than once. Wild is one I will read again and again and again......

Wild. I loved it! often times I either wished I was there with her or I felt like I was actually there in my tent. I connected and was afraid for her with the strange encounters of men but was was also happy that most turned out to be real friends.

Hmmmm. Mature and inspiring redirection and growth are common throughout this read. So it’s more than a little frustrating and confounding, when a sober and rational moment is interrupted by an equally irrational and nonsensical line of thought and reasoning the next second. The author seemed very bipolar in her thought process and in her penchant for self destruction when she’s already shown us she can behave like an adult when she needs to. Yet either in spite or because of this uncommon polarity or for reasons I’ve yet to understand myself, Cheryl managed to leave me thankful for the dizzying experience that was walking with her thoughts on the Pacific Coast Trail. I hope her redemption is the path she stays on and doesn’t Stray from.

Moving. I started this book with little interest, choosing to read the sample to fill some time. I became engrossed and then obsessed with it. It is a moving story, capturing the joy, loneliness, hysteria, etc, that the author felt. I loved it.

Wild. Wild is a fantastic book. I enjoyed hiking the PCT with Cheryl. This book inspired me to hike Blood Mountain in Georgia this weekend. It was great and using the knowledge from the book helped me hike to the top yesterday and today!!!

What a wonderful journey. Though it seemed impossible and ludicrous, the story turned out to be a wonderful journey from grief and self-pity to confidence and acceptance.

Don't recommend this book to your hiker buddies. I have been repeatedly recommended this book by friends because they know I do a lot of long-term hiking. I did read it, but people should know that the book is not really about the hiking. It is mostly a "finding-herself" story, which a lot of hiker types will find frustrating. Also, I found the story was less compelling because she didn't even finish the PCT, plus she didn't really seem to know what she was doing. There are plenty of better books for hikers, written by folks who actually finished the trail. They may not be endorsed by Oprah, but they are certainly a better recommendation for your "outdoorsy" friends.

I enjoyed the book!. I know that she only wants to express how she grew and how she became the person she already had inside her but that hardest stretch of trail through the desert and the Sierras snow pack brought out the fight and grit she had in her. This book was not meant to glamorize the PCT or make it seem like a day stroll. She went through genuine hardships. Yes she had Strayed into drugs before the trail and she had to get some knocks and bruises on the trail but this story shows how she Got to the Oregon bridge crossing “Bridge of the Gods” and something had grown in her. A former weakness of sorts had turned to power. I’m sure we all have this in us. That grit. She has a way of baring her very soul in this captivating story of love, loss, and her ability to recover from her endless pain and grief. This story in particular has made me want to prove that I have a little more grit than my family realizes!!!

Fascinating story. This felt like a true self-help book: one that doesn't tell you the lessons you're supposed to learn. Instead Strayed opens her heart and let's us look inside. What you see is what you need and what you see is probably different than what I see. At the end of this book I am inspired to walk my own PCT journey that has nothing to do with hiking. Thank you, Cheryl, for inviting me onto the path and reminding me that healing comes in the most surprising packages. All we ever have to do is open them.

If you like Eat, Pray, Love you'll love this.. Beautifully written, fast read.

bad. it is a good thing i had another version of this book in read2go format. whole chunks are missing and pa20ges are the sam in the chapter before wild and in the chapter of wild, i gave up using this format. and am sad i spent money on it just because it has oprah's notes, never found her notes just highlighted sections that were few and far between,

Wild. From the moment I started to read this book I was captured. Her honesty was amazing. I am amazed at her strength.

Wild. This was a great summer read! I enjoyed every bit of it.

Life changing!. What wonderful courage and determination Cheryl had on her journey - and she made it all so real that we could experience it along with her! I felt changed and able to see my own world in a new way when I finished her book. One of the best books I've read in a very long time!
