Detroit by Charlie LeDuff Book Summary

An explosive exposé of America’s lost prosperity by Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Charlie LeDuff

“One cannot read Mr. LeDuff's amalgam of memoir and reportage and not be shaken by the cold eye he casts on hard truths . . . A little gonzo, a little gumshoe, some gawker, some good-Samaritan—it is hard to ignore reporting like Mr. LeDuff's.” —The Wall Street Journal

“Pultizer-Prize-winning journalist LeDuff . . . writes with honesty and compassion about a city that’s destroying itself–and breaking his heart.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A book full of both literary grace and hard-won world-weariness.” —Kirkus

Back in his broken hometown, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Charlie LeDuff searches the ruins of Detroit for clues to his family’s troubled past. Having led us on the way up, Detroit now seems to be leading us on the way down. Once the richest city in America, Detroit is now the nation’s poorest. Once the vanguard of America’s machine age—mass-production, blue-collar jobs, and automobiles—Detroit is now America’s capital for unemployment, illiteracy, dropouts, and foreclosures. With the steel-eyed reportage that has become his trademark, and the righteous indignation only a native son possesses, LeDuff sets out to uncover what destroyed his city. He beats on the doors of union bosses and homeless squatters, powerful businessmen and struggling homeowners and the ordinary people holding the city together by sheer determination. Detroit: An American Autopsy is an unbelievable story of a hard town in a rough time filled with some of the strangest and strongest people our country has to offer.

Great book. My roots in Detroit go back to Great-grandfather Davis who was a civil war Doctor. This book captures the essence of the place I call home, warts and all! A great read.

Through The Eyes of a Native Son. Very well written. Raw and compelling. Thoroughly enjoyed learning of some of Detroit's inner workings, it's history and the struggles of yesterday and today. I hope to see more from Charlie on this subject. His honesty and emotion makes this book incredibly enjoyable even though most of the subject matter was disheartening. Need more "real" reporters like him.

Wow. This book is a great read. It is a page turner. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. So many sad truths written in great depth that it made the book read like a work of fiction. Well done Charlie.

Detroit. My home town, it was sad and a for runner of today. A good read everyone especially we from. Detroit should read. It will bring back memories some good and many sad

Detroit-a must read. The decaying of America continues and I can see Detroit's cancerous rumors spreading to other downtrodden cities that have had other industries (textiles, manufacturing, etc.) ripped from their souls and never replaced. In my area, Holyoke, Springfield, Chicopee, Lawrence, Brockton, Worcester come to mind....surely your state has a few of these.

Detroit. A good book that brought back many memories.

Detroit. Great easy read and as a detroit ear, provides a great history lesson. Love detroit. It's like how Charlie describes family.

Detroit. I really enjoyed the reality of this account of life in Detroit. (One year later): I just finished reading it for the second time. Enjoyed it as much as the first.

Epic book. I loved this book. Every metro Detroiter from the highland park to Bloomfield Hills needs to read it. I commend Leduff on his wit, humor, and story telling ability. Much respect to Leduff, and all the 725000 stories of the D.

Enjoyed the book. Charlie, This book was a very disturbing and numbing portrayal of a great American city. I appreciate your prospective and this story needed to be told. Thank you for the education.

Detroit, An American Autopsy. A must read for anyone who grew up in Detroit.

Great and depressing. I saw Leduff on Bill Maher when I was already reading his book. He is the genuine article and his writing is crisp. This is a very insightful book on the decline of Detroit. Its the best you can get without actually living there yourself.... Its funny, asni read about the firemen with holes in their boots, it made me google the price of boots to see if i could afford to donate some to those guys.

I hate the depiction of Detroit as a war zone. I read this bk in like 4days. I love Charlie leduff and his literary skills. Great bk...I was a little annoyed @ 1st reading the sample, but this was a great bk, especially if u r a detroiter! Detroit is F$@ked up but I disagree with the whole "war zone" thing

This is Detroit. Great read. Rarely do writers capture my hometown in a way that I recognize. As sad as it is... This is the true story of Detroit.

A honest read. Leduff does an amazing job showing just the tip of the iceberg of the corruption in The D while at the same time never failing to mention that most of the city is full of good people. I love Detroit and while this book presents a sad truth it’s a necessary one. Charlie does a wonderful job telling of the city both its ugly and beautiful parts.

Detroit An American Autopsy. I think we can all learn a little bit about society in general by using what's happening in Detroit as a microcosm of sorts. Charlie LeDuff is a great story teller, with the ability to propel you quickly through page after page of tales of some really disgusting, morally reprehensible behavior. But he also shines a light on some amazingly heroic people. I found it almost impossible to put down. And I have to say, I'm sad it's over--I might have to read it again!

Tears for home. This book does an incredible job of painting the future of America if the citizens of this country don't do a better job of keeping score of all things around them, government, business and crime! I was born in Detroit and have a deep love for the city and people who remain. I grew up there and had to find a life elsewhere. This book is an EYE OPENER for those who don't know!

Amazing!. Such a great story of the city of Detroit. So well worded and told so well by LeDuff. It really makes you think, especially being from Detroit.

Detroit: A Beautifully written book!. Charlie DeBuff has written a masterpiece account of the life and death of one of America's great cities, telling an account of how

Our system. It's the way we organise and do things, our system. Works great when the resources are stacked in your favour, and looks the other way when shortages arise. This book describes a tragedy of reckless intent by those who have the power (but no Humanity) to make a difference to less fortunate souls. It's funny how our system neatly organises our power and resources into a bountiful arrangement that is constantly attacked by the worst of our human traits. Repeatedly. This cannot be accidental. Looks like Detroit residents should apply for asylum and leave, since their UN-chartered human rights aren't being met - as described through the author's rolling characters and stories. Sounds worse than third world - my home. How helpless we have become in this modern era, that humans must live like this, and I doubt remote tribal people are this volatile among themselves. Where is the culture? Is it one of desperation? Why? Nobody chooses this for themselves. This is not an acceptable outcome for the idea of progress. Where was the UN charter on human rights for the first 30,000 years of humanity? Why do Detroitians (and others) need it to be enshrined now in this modern world? Are we by nature dependant, helpless creatures? Maybe its because something is missing, like real independence and empowerment. The real identity of who we are has been disfigured and in our stupor, a system was created. 5 stars for hopelessness 2 stars for the way it made me feel

Captivating. As a son of the rust belt, the pain and anguish has never been captured in such words. Charlie Leduff gets it right. I commend him for writing such an honest book. Perhaps one day we economic exiles can return home.

A look at the inside of the decaying city. Very sad but powerful book describing the corruption and the decline of one of the great cities in America.

Amazing, Honest and Brave. I'm not sure how he did it, but the style and nature of writing is bold and full of character of an experienced Detroier who has had enough of the ongoing BLIGHT and HALF WIT POLITICIANS that have destroyed the once great city. Most of his details are exceptionally accurate and obviously researched. This is where the amazement comes from - he got cooperation from the animals in city hall and is still able to function. Well done essay that calls a spade a spade!

Detroit: It tastes as just as what it used to be.... I lived in Rochester, Mi for almost 14 years until the economy crash of 2008. Having grown in love with Detroit... Charlie tells everything about the city. Many stories magnified the bigger problems of many corruptions leading to the fall of Detroit. It was once a grand city and it is still a grand city in the heart of America. God bless Detroit. Thank you, Charlie.

Hard to believe that this book isn't fiction. What a read!. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The subject matter is intense and unforgiving, as is LeDuff's delivery. His writing style is smooth, witty, and hilarious at times, unlike the situation in Detroit. I knew things were bad, but not third world country bad. This book is an eye-opener and should be viewed as a warning to the rest of the continent that we are not far behind.

Good read. A heartfelt journey into the mind and the heart of a once great city. Funny, entertaining, and heart breaking.
