The Dinner by Herman Koch Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The darkly suspenseful tale of two families struggling to make the hardest decision of their lives—all over the course of one meal. Now a major motion picture.

“Chilling, nasty, smart, shocking, and unputdownable.”—Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl

It’s a summer’s evening in Amsterdam, and two couples meet at a fashionable restaurant for dinner. Between mouthfuls of food and over the scrapings of cutlery, the conversation remains a gentle hum of polite discourse. But behind the empty words, terrible things need to be said, and with every forced smile and every new course, the knives are being sharpened.

Each couple has a fifteen-year-old son. The two boys are united by their accountability for a single horrific act—an act that has triggered a police investigation and shattered the comfortable, insulated worlds of their families. As the dinner reaches its culinary climax, the conversation finally touches on their children, and as civility and friendship disintegrate, each couple shows just how far they are prepared to go to protect those they love.

A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK

“A European Gone Girl . . . A sly psychological thriller.”—The Wall Street Journal

“Brilliantly engineered . . . The novel is designed to make you think twice, then thrice, not only about what goes on within its pages, but also the next time indignation rises up, pure and fiery, in your own heart.”—Salon

“You’ll eat it up, with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.”—Entertainment Weekly

“[Koch] has created a clever, dark confection . . . absorbing and highly readable.”—New York Times Book Review

“Tongue-in-cheek page-turner.”—The Washington Post

“[A] deliciously Mr. Ripley-esque drama.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

The Dinner. I read this book despite some harsh reviews and I'm glad I did...I found the narrator fascinating and the story, however troubling, was gripping and thought provoking. I definitely recommend.

Boring. So boring. I never put a book down but after 100 pages I can’t waste another second waiting for something to happen.

Quick Read, engaging. Enjoyed this book, sometimes it seemed to ramble about unnecessary details. Makes you stop and think about how you would react to the same situations. Characters were believable but sometimes their actions not so much. Downloaded and finished it in one day.

Boring. Odd story. Irritating, bordering on extremely dislikable characters. Not at all like Gone Girl. More closely resembles Defending Jacob, but with much less substance.

The dinner. It was a great read. Loved character presentation and plot

Forced mediocre drama. Not impressed with the plot- seemed forced. Although I wanted to finish reading I finished very dissapointed. Would not recommend

Couldn't wait for dinner to be over. I must have read 3 other books while reading this. I found this book boring.

Unimaginative and Downright Dreadful. Unimaginative and cliché-ridden. In a word, dreadful. (I read an English translation of the original Dutch so whether the fault lay in the translation or the original writing, hard to say.)

A book of unlikeable characters. I feel it's becoming an epidemic. All I've been reading are books with a host of unlikable characters. Gone are the days of heroes and protagonists. Now it seems that cover to cover it's all folks that I find myself unable to care about, even a little. This novel is one of the worst or perhaps best example of this epidemic. Individuals with Aspergers Syndrome, psychopaths, murderers, ego maniacs, politicians, cover ups, family dysfunction, it just unravels during the course of 1 disgusting meal and leaves you feeling empty. And dirty. There are no winners and the biggest losers are those who pay money to read this junk. I'm sorry I'm one of the above.

Had its good parts. Seemed slow at times but some parts were interesting and full of suspense. Good not great.

Blah. I bought this because it was being compared to Gone Girl...which I loved. This book was nothing like it. It was boring and drawn out. I had to force myself to finish the short novel. I would not recommend it to friends.

Buy a hamburger instead. Painfully wordy in parts. And in others- details left out and never acknowledged. Very quirky. Dark. Too vague. This was an all around painful read.

Gripping. Absolutely fascinating and controversial. The narrator is compelling and tells an excellent story. Couldn't put it down. Read it in 2 days.

Horrible. Had to force myself to finish. Not one redeeming moment in the book. Finished so that I could "close the book" in my mind. Disturbing on many levels.

The Dinner. Keeps you engaged as you try to understand plot but outcome is disturbing. Reminded me of Defending Jacob.

The dinner. Boring. That's all I can say.

Terrible. This book was boring to read, had characters that I abhorred and left me wishing I had never read it. I honestly cannot fathom how anyone can say they enjoyed this book. I don't mind dark novels. I enjoyed Gone Girl. I just found nothing remotely interesting about this book.

So incredibly boring. I found myself skipping pages at a time. Hoping for something interesting. The first five pages were the best. Couldn't bear to finish.

Horrible.. Refer to title. I have no clue how this novel is so popular.

Terrible.. I HATE THIS BOOK. I finished it only because I paid for it and I had some hope that it would get better. I wasted $12 and 292 pages of my reading life on this.

The Dinner. Extremely well written, compelling story. Just when we think we know our families....

Dark book...taut suspense. I downloaded this based on a ny times review comparing this to Gone Girl. The comparison Sams from fact you don fully know what up with the characters, who's good or bad, etc..it's revealed as story progresses. It holds your attention and its an intriguing read...but disturbing as well, and ultimately not as satisfying. I don't know whether I'd recommend it or not- well written but wasn't necessarily for me ..ultimately too dark for my tastes

Slow. I had a hard time continuing to read as the story moved slow.

The Dinner. At first you like the narrator for his sharp and humorous observations regarding a costly meal in an upscale restaurant. It wasn't hard to be lured into thinking this might be a light hearted look at family discord over a leisurely dinner. Before you know it you begin to realize something bigger is coming and the protagonist is someone you wouldn't want to share a bus with let alone a long meal.

Interesting read. I read this book based on a review in a magazine. Although it is written amazingly and keeps you interested, you never find out the endings to some pivotal moments. If you like books that tell the history, then jump back to the present, and how family dynamics are all apart of that you will enjoy. Even thoughtful was originally written about a Dutch family, one being a high powered politician, it's still resonates about every family dynamic all over the world.

Uhh. What the hell.

Interesting book. Interesting book. I like the author's narrative style. He probes deeply into the human pschology seen through a dinner in a top class restaurant. It is a slightly disturbing novel too as the background is a murder/ manslaughter of a homeless woman by two teenagers.

The Dinner. This is a truly terrible book!

Terrible. This is my first review ever but I had to write it to say this is by far the worst book I have ever read I only finished it because I figured something crazy would happen but nothing ever does. This book doesn't have a plot, nothing happens it's just descriptions of things. This is nothing like gone girl or dark places or girl on a train. So if you like those books do not read this book

Short story made long. Maybe it is that I am an admittedly unsophisticated reader, but I found this book 200 pages too long. The premise is great: two brothers and their wives meet over dinner to discuss a dark event in their children's lives. The execution of this story, however, was wearisome. This would be a great short story given that the so-called suspense focused on a single event rather a series of events. I also did not like the way the author went into so such detail about the omission of certain details (like his wife's illness or the name of his former employer). If the details aren't important, why continue to remind the reader they are omitted? Why distract me so wildly from the actual storyline?

Something must have been lost in translation.. Painful to read, without a single likable character. Paul and Claire are like the Dutch Sopranos. I should have stopped after the appetizer.

Even dealingsdss. wsssersbokww knows he seems like the same r

Boring. No substance

Boring… Disappointed. Full disclosure, I didn’t finish it; it was insufferable. I really tried my best to get through to the “good” part that everyone raved about, but it just wasn’t interesting. The narrator whined about everything… multiple times… it felt like a waste of my time to read. I remind myself that it is the author’s job to keep me, the reader, entertained, not mine. So with that reminder I will not pressure myself to finish it, and congrats Herman you scammed me out of $11.

Surprisingly disappointing. The beginning of this book had me hooked. I read the sample and was instantly intrigued. When they started going all over the place with timeline jumps and odd dinner interruptions, they lost me. I really thought this book was going to be a solid 4 or 5 stars from me, but it fell flat.

Quick crazy read!. This book took helicopter parenting to a whole new level! First e-book read This dinner would not have been a nice nite out. The Narrator draws you right in from the get go and his issues and others unfold, Hot button subjects like; homelessness, the death penalty, and mental illness make this a great book club read.

Strange. The story is bizarre, the book left me with too many unanswered questions and the relevance of side stories. What was wrong with this man? It's like the author was in his own world and told parts of a story and assumed the reader knew where he was going with it. I have never been more confused while reading and left with an ending that made zero sense. A waste of time and waste of money

Entertaining. Quick read by the pool!

Intriguing. Koch writes an intriguing tale of the ongoing battle between good & evil and intimate human relationships, particularly in the face of trying circumstances...EAF

Deceiving description. I was so disappointed with this book. Like others, I skipped pages because it got so slow in some parts. The author describes mundane, unimportant memories and objects in painstaking detail. Case in point, an entire lengthy paragraph describing a rotting apple core which has absolutely nothing to do with the story. Ugh. What a drag. The description was so promising, but just like a movie trailer, the best bits are in the preview.

Finished in one sitting!. I couldn't put this book down. I started reading it one morning sick and home from work, and finished it late that night. Very compelling read with a narrator who only slowly reveals his true self. Themes include nature vs. nurture and what lengths parents will go to to protect their children. Now I can't wait to read more by this author.

Great Novel. Exactly how a novel is supposed to be written. Great plot, a little mystery & a wild situation. Put yourself in these parents shoes and see if u wouldn't do the same for your kids

Couldn't put it down!. Completely mesmerizing!

The worst. I read reviews in the paper that sounded interesting, then later downloaded the sample. Before committing to buy I read reader reviews and saw several one star - but other 4-5 star ones. I decided to buy the book and see for myself......DON'T MAKE THIS MISTAKE! Senseless drivel interspersed with word images you don't want in your head, trust me. Consequently, I had to skip over probably 50% of the book - $11.99 down the drain.

The Dinner. This book caught my eye because it was an "Editor's Choice", and I am very glad that I read it. It has such a mixture of humour, suspense, moral dilemma and family bonds of love/dislike that it was very hard to put down. Herman Koch put me on a literary roller coaster that I truthfully was not prepared for, but was pleasantly surprised. I hope in the deepest corner of my heart that I will never be forced to make a decision like the characters in this novel had to make-it would be, and was, gut-wrenching. I'd highly recommend this book to everybody!

Meh. It was okay.

The Dinner. This book started out with a bang and had me hooked after a few pages. It was very interesting and the characters were well drawn. Unfortunately by the middle of the book the whole dynamic changed and it really became a book about sociopaths and not really a book about moral dilemmas for the two main characters. If this is your thing go for it but with more normal people it could have been a truly great book about doing or not doing the right thing and what it implies for mankind. It just left me feeling rather sick.

The Dinner. A craftily constructed novel which changes directions, place and time with seamless perfection. Humorous, tender and hard hitting, all at the same time.
