Diving In - iOS App Development for Non-Programmers Book Reviews
Diving In - iOS App Development for Non-Programmers by Kevin J McNeish Book Summary
Winner of the Publishing Innovation Award!
"Dedicated to Steve Jobs, this self published book highlights much of
what Jobs himself strove for - clear, crisp design, intuitive interface
and user experience coupled with high quality, clear content." -
Digital Book World
"Most of the books I scanned, even the "Dummies" series, assumed a
basic knowledge of computer programming even for iOS beginners. What I
like about Kevin's writing is that he doesn't make any assumptions - he
just takes you there - step by step." - Lorraine Akemann - Moms
With Apps
"Great for developers too! With this book, I finally understand the
relationship between Xcode, Swift, Cocoa Framework, and the related
Mac tips. If I don't get a concept, the video at the end of each chapter
brings it all together. - Dan Neuman
This first book in the series from Kevin McNeish, winner of the
Publishing Innovation award, award-winning App Developer, highly acclaimed
iOS trainer and conference speaker, is specifically designed to teach
non-programmers how to create an App for the iPhone and iPad. Many books
designed for the beginning Apple developer assume way too much. In
contrast, this book series assumes you know nothing about
programming.
This first book is your "easy in" and builds confidence that you can write
Apps for the iPhone and iPad. The entire book has been reviewed by people
like you--with no experience in how to make an App. Diagrams were added
and examples improved until all "beta readers" completely understood each
key concept.
Up to Date With the Latest Technologies
The information in this book is up to date with the latest iOS
technologies, including the iOS 9 and the latest version of
Xcode. You will learn about storyboards, scenes, navigation,
displaying lists of data, animating transitions between scenes, using
maps, and much more.
Includes Step-by-Step Instructional Videos!
There are seven step-by-step instructional videos in which you watch the
author create each part of the App. This is great for non-programmers who
might need some extra help.

Diving In - iOS App Development for Non-Programmers (Kevin J McNeish) Book Reviews 2024
We transfer money over ā¬4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!
Instructions I can understand. I'm a mother without any prior coding experience. After outsourcing my first few apps, I wanted to see if I could build my next one from scratch. Kevin's instructions were clear and straightforward, assuming no prior programming experience. He also includes videos at the end of each chapter so you can review what you learned in the text and images. So far so good.
The REAL book for intro programmers. This is a great book for teaching people who really don't know anything about programming how to write (or prototype) a mobile app. So many books start with "This book assumes you have at least intermediate experience with C++ or Objective Cā¦" This book assumes you have nothing, and walks you through the whole thing. Rather than starting with arcane objective C or even the "Hello World" program, it does a great job of putting the shiny things in front of you and showing you how they interact. The storyboard and segues are described in great detail. The movies at the end of each chapter are a great summary of what you had just seen. If the goal of this book is to get you to buy book 2 and 3 by whetting your appetite on how to make a real mobile app at least look like it is functioning, the goal is met!
Amazing!!. OK. The content of this book is very beginner, and that's who it is for, but the formatting, user interface, and media make it the best best beginner book I've ever read. I'm working with "Book 2: Flying with Objective-C" now, and I can tell you it just gets better. Having the interactive scenes along with all the media and user interface like book 1 makes it another best ever! The book literally draws out the the links of Objective-C! Great job Mr. McNeish!
There are many āBeginningā iOS & Objective-C Books out there. This is the ONLY SERIES that works!. Attempting to auto-didact myself into the wondrous world of app development over the last 2 years has been brutal. The other texts out there all start out nice, but 4 to 6 chapters in things sort of fall offā¦ This series, starting with this marvelous Book 1, is truly a revolution, unbelievably well designed with the hydrocephallic idiot like myself in mind! Nice, big text, pretty pictures, animated flash cards, and most delightful of all, the movies at the end of Ch3 through 9. Most important of all, it brings out the FUN that draws us into this most difficult subject to begin with! I am deeply grateful to the good Dr. McNeish (and any associates, for that matter) for the conception and presentation which have resulted in a WONDERFUL experience. There is simply no other text on this subject which ANY beginner should even consider. Very reasonably priced, for a priceless work.
Finally - the Intro to developing I've been looking for. I'm a techy guy but I work on the networking side of things not development. I've always wanted to learn to program but for years have never found a resource that quickly taught the necessary skills in a manner that fit my busy schedule. This book combines a simple easy to understand teaching technique with the videos and image capabilities of iBooks to deliver an educational experience that I've not found any other book match to date. Quite simply the easiest way to jump in the pool of iOS development I've experienced.
Sweet Spot of Technical/Hand-holding. I have completed several Intro to iOS development books and e-books but never really gained traction. Seemed like the APIās and Xcode changed too much each year that I was never quite sure what of the texts still applied and Xcode was useable but difficult to understand. This book definitely gets your feet wet and I appreciated the thoroughness of instructions and illustrations to build confidence. Have bought other 2 books in series and would not hesitate to purchase others as released based on Book 1. Kevin and his wife presented to Mac User Group and he seems like a great instructor with enthusiasm for anyone to learn iOS programming.
Great book for beginner. I've been reading many books on iOS programming since last years. This book is by far the best I've come across. It is clear, to the point, and follows a good order. It helps beginner to build their first App without write a single line of code.
Outstanding!!. What else needs to be said.
Easy to understand, straight to the point. Consicely and clearly written guide which I personllay found immensely useful for getting the taste of main Xcode features and learning the basics of putting prototypes together. Would greatly recommend. Moving on to the next book on Swift.
Works for old people too.. I was a professional (Main Frame) computer programmer, and have been catching up on newer languages and techniques. I have tried several Swift courses and usually get hung up due either to software upgrades, or coding errors the ebooks donāt cover. This one was a dream. Everything worked as intended, or the XCODE debuggers showed me my typing errors. Good to see professional work in an ebook.
Easy. You want a way to jump into Xcode this is the book, this is the book that makes it possible. LS3 Heidelberger, Travis USN
Simply Amazing!. I just finished the first book and made my first prototype app. It feels so great! This book is so easy to follow along with. I love the mix of written instruction and video instruction. Learning a concept both ways really helps it sink in. Thank you so much for creating this series. Just bought the second book. Can't wait to learn more!
Very easy to follow and a great starting point for a non-Apple developer. This book is very good and a very easy read. The instructions are very detailed, so it is very easy to follow the directions. I have been a developer for 20 years and have used serveral IDEās in my career from Visual Studio to Eclipse. However, XCode never seemed easy for me because of the lack of good documentation on the web. This book is a good jump start for a very low cost. There is one thing to note. I am reading āDiving Into iOS 8ā and am on Chapter 4. So far no problem with the exception of not being able to display the table in the simulator. The solution was to add the following steps: Click on the "Navigation Controllerā. In the Inspector to the right, click on the 3rd icon from the right to show the āAttributes Inspectorā. Look for the āView Controllerā section, and click āIs Initial View Controllerā. Now, if you run the simulator, you will be able to see the table.
The best book for diving!!. I searched a lot to find a book or course to learning Xcode and these series of books are the best one I found. Without a doubt!
I love this book!!!!!!. This book makes it so easy to understand the beginning process to making an app even without any prior knowledge of app making what-so-ever!!! I mean it! I've heard great things about Kevin and He clearly lives up to his great unique ability to teach, You gotta get this book!
The Best Practices for the Beginner Programmer. While most programming books throw you into the middle of things, this book eases you into programming by showing you the process of creating a prototype app. I learned that making prototype apps is a good habit for serious app-makers. This book is perfect for the nonprogrammer who is serious about taking the first step in learning how to program well. While this book contains no programming, it was a Programming 101 course for me that led right into learning Objective-C, the next book in this series.
.. .
Wonderful!. I want to develop iOS apps. It has not been easy to get started until now. The problem is that most books and manuals assume too much about you. They assume that you have a decent amount of prior knowledge of the subject. Not this book, though. I love how detailed and easy the concepts and terminology are to comprehend. If you want to get started with iOS development, I would start here.

Excellent. This really helped a total newcomer. I had zero idea but i finished the book in 2 days. Just about to begin book 2. I cannot rate this guy highly enough.
iOS Development for Beginners. I bought this book as I wanted to start learning to Produce iPhone and iPad apps. I am a complete beginner when it comes to programming and so I needed something that was simple and easy to understand. In this book you are walked through the construction of a prototype app which uses 0 lines of code, not one! The app produced however is a fully functioning app, but to make use of many features that Xcode has to offer you need to add code. The book gives you step by step instructions of how to download, install and navigate Xcode, and offers alternative ways of doing the same thing which is good because you can choose which method you prefer. The video tutorial at the end of each chapter helps you in case you get stuck reading the written instructions, which is difficult because the book makes it seem so simple! All in all I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who is brand new to the app development scene (like me) and I am looking forward to continuing with this series in the second book "Flying with Objective-C".
Amazing book really easy to understand.. Iām a beginner to App Development youāre videos in this book made it really easy to understand, youāre a great writer and teacher. Now itās time for me to start the second book.
Great book. Iāve tried for years to get into iOS development, but never found a book which made things click. Usually with other books you'll have an app up and running by the end of chapter 2, but you don't really understand how. Its ādrop this UI element hereā, āLink this to thatā and āadd this piece of code hereā. You don't really understand whats going on. This book (being part of a series), the author seems to have split things up into more manageable chunks. This book for example will have you developing an app using Appleās new Story Board feature and although you don't write a single line of code, it gives you a good understanding of how things fit together in Xcode. Also being in iBook created with iBook Author, its really easy to read and contains videos and other interactive sections. The book is well worth the read and don't take the āNon-Programmersā in the title literally. Another plus point, the book is written for the latest version of Xcode, iOS 6 and iPhone 5.
Great book for getting started. This is an excellent book if you have no experience with or are new to ios programming or app development in general. It takes you step by step through the understanding of ios apps and xcode and into creating an actual app. As a book it really uses the ebook format well, to not just impart information, but to educate the reader by using all the formats tools such as videos, note taking and links. It is very well thought out and shows that the author is really interested in actually teaching the subject. If you have no programming knowledge or are new to programming and dont know where to start this book is thoroughly recommended.
VERY basic and misleading sample chapters. I bought this book on the strength of the 5-star reviews it was getting but I have to say I was thorougly disappointed with it and amazed it has got such good reviews. When you download the sample book it implies you are going to build a delivery app from scratch complete with displaying the delivery address for a customer, status of deliveries, location on a map etc. The Author even states āThis is a great app to prototype because there are many businesses that are looking for someone to create a similar delivery app for themā¦ā What he doesnt make clear is that what you will produce at the end of this book is a static app where all the information is hardcoded!!! The list of customers are laboriously typed in by hand into separate lines in a list view and when you select the customer and move to the next screen all the details have to be typed in my hand. No passing information from screen to screen, no change in what delivery status you clicked (he even hardcodes a tick agaist one of them to show youāve selected it!). The majority of the text and video for this book just shows the author changing the text on labels to represent what a real functioning deliveries app might look like. Be aware, what you produce at the end of this is totally useless for any real world application. There is NO code here - its all visual and although some people may think this is great,it is in no way programming and its impossible to do anything useful without ANY code!!! I would definitely like a refund as this should have been pointed out in the sample book. For Ā£6.49 what is covered in this book is outrageous as you will learn how to produce nothing more than a IOS version of a āHello Worldā application at the end of it!
Time Machineā¦.. There is a time machine after allā¦Published 1 Oct,2013ā¦ Apart from that Kevin is a genius. If you want to learn about IOS App development, just buy this book.
Best start for iOS Developing, full stop. The negative reviewer on here who complains that the book doesnāt create anything that works is completely missing the point. This book is nothing less than a breathe of fresh air. Iām not a programmer and thatās why I bought a book for āNon-Programmersā. I went through this book in a day and at the end of it, I was absolutely over the moon with myself because I understood the whole process of creating an App. This is not meant to make you a hot shot iOS Developer (the clue is in the Book ā1ā), itās to get you started with Xcode and how things come together. I really canāt recommend this book highly enough. Iāve tried countless books and given up very quickly after struggling with the structure. This book is faultless and the videos at the end of each chapter are just the icing on the cake if youāre struggling at all with the text. Well done Mr McNeish and Iām off to read Book 2.
GREAT BOOK. THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. Great introduction. Easy instructions did the whole thing in 1.5 hours it is great then went on to develop as learn't more
Now I get it !. Its a short book but teaches you about storyboards very well. Iāve already started putting the book to good use and creating my own projects.
Great Book. Finally a great book to hold your hand through the basics and demystify iOS development. Can't wait to start the second book.
Excellent read and an engaging book. I really enjoyed working through this book, and for the first time I've been able to stay motivated to actually continue down the path of learning to develop for the iOS platform. I have tried several times before, but the structure of the books were intimidating and the way the information was presented made it difficult to grasp the overall concept. Kevin McNeish as done a marvellous job at making this iBook interesting to read, interactive and engaging, and most of all fun to read. I recommend "Diving into iOS' to anyone interested in learning to program iOS. I'm really looking forward to moving on the part two of the series.
Very Good Book. This book is written in a way that makes it easy to understand. The instructions are very clear.
Top Marks!. This is the book to read if you are a complete beginner. I still had to pay very close attention but the author covers everything and when you are finished you have a very cool basic prototype app which with the latest xcode you can put straight on your iOS device.
