Excellent interactive book-brings the subject alive for students!. Such a great interactive book-especially for home schooled kids since it makes it so easy on the parent teacher. So much better than a normal textbook to really pull the kids into the love of learning.

Universal Design at its best!. This science book proved a theory I posited in 2009. Good Universal Design and learning theory applied to a book would create a truly accessible text. With the use of VoiceOver this book is completely accessible and even the quiz content is available for students. Used with a projector, the images can become acessible to students with low vision. My experience in the field of visual impairments places this book at the top of any list for middle school students or even a supplement for high school courses. For those students with sight, the pictures, interactivity, and design is flawless. I’ve referred to it repeatedly to help my wife in the development of her iBook. Sean Tikkun M.S. Core Ideas in Life Science is great for homeschool.. I started incorporating the iPad into my 11-year-old homeschooled daughter's lessons 2 months ago and Core Ideas in Life Science quickly became a very important part of our curriculum.  My daughter loves the interactive lessons and quizzes.  The lessons are short of enough to keep her attention, yet still provide plenty of information.   The format makes it simple for me to assign her lessons; one segment (text w/ quiz) a day. Overall, this book lets us have learning without whining... a big plus! Note: 4 chapters discuss old earth/evolution. If that's a problem for you, it is easy to just skip those chapters and still get the full value from the remaining 27 chapters.

Core Ideas in Life Science. This is an excellent textbook for Middle School Life Science. Aligned with the NGSS, easy to read text, outstanding video clips, and excellent animations. Students overwhelmingly liked using this text over a conventional print text. Visual Learning Company also offers introductory video and print resources to compliment the text. Core Ideas in Life Science. I was so happy to find this iBook! Moving to a digital platform can present some real challenges, but this quality interactive text is ensuring student engagement and learning.

MS Sci. Teacher. The book has great graphics and content but be aware it does take up a bit of memory on the student’s iPad. (4.5GB) We’ve run into probelms with students trying to download the book. If your a teacher and want to have it on your iPad and laptop this book doesn’t allow you to do that.

Highly Recommended. This innovative textbook is perfect for the middle school age student. Other textbooks out there are aimed at the High School level, including the wonderful EO Wilson book, but that has only a few chapters available. This book takes advantage of the iPad technology very well, lots of embedded videos and high quality graphics. I really like how the chapter sections are kept short and conclude with short, fairly easy quizzes. These boost the student's confidence, keep the content manageable, and lead wonderfully into the next section. I wish the authors would make more books such as this for all the middle school science courses. Next year our school is scheduled to issue iPads to every student, and I will urge them to get this book. Surely this medium will improve in years to come, allowing for more student input and work beyond the multiple choice question, but right now this is the best middle school life science iBook textbook available.

The Perfect E-Text. As the Director of Technology for a public K-12 School, I have worked with many types of e-texts the last couple years as we issued iPads to each student in grades 6-9 in a 1:1 program. This e-text is exactly what I wish all of the others were like. First, it downloads completey as an iBook so that the students do not have to be online at home or wherever for it to work. This is an issue for many of our students that do not have wi-fi at their home. Second, the pictures and videos are amazing. I myself am a visual learner and I can really appreciate the quality and quantity of videos, photos and interactive exercises that this book contains. And third, it just works. With some of the other e-texts we are using, they are part of an app that downloads and manages the texts. And like some apps, they occasionally crash or don’t work causing a lot of grief for the student. I have not experienced a single issue with it not working yet. This is an excellent value for the money, and not a headache for the IT department.

Fantastic Way to Learn Life Science. Excellent book. The best I've seen for Middle School students. The videos and animations make the subject come alive. I know my students find the layout visually appealing, the short check-in quizzes helpful, and the content interesting. A good mix of general introductory information and up-to-date technical depth. The content can be easily expanded upon depending on the interests of the teacher. Definitely recommended.
