A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout & Sara Corbett Book Summary

BREAKING NEWS: Amanda Lindhout’s lead kidnapper, Ali Omar Ader, has been caught.

Amanda Lindhout wrote about her fifteen month abduction in Somalia in A House in the Sky. It is the New York Times bestselling memoir of a woman whose curiosity led her to the world’s most remote places and then into captivity: “Exquisitely told…A young woman’s harrowing coming-of-age story and an extraordinary narrative of forgiveness and spiritual triumph” (The New York Times Book Review).

As a child, Amanda Lindhout escaped a violent household by paging through issues of National Geographic and imagining herself visiting its exotic locales. At the age of nineteen, working as a cocktail waitress, she began saving her tips so she could travel the globe. Aspiring to understand the world and live a significant life, she backpacked through Latin America, Laos, Bangladesh, and India, and emboldened by each adventure, went on to Sudan, Syria, and Pakistan. In war-ridden Afghanistan and Iraq she carved out a fledgling career as a television reporter. And then, in August 2008, she traveled to Somalia—“the most dangerous place on earth.” On her fourth day, she was abducted by a group of masked men along a dusty road.

Held hostage for 460 days, Amanda survives on memory—every lush detail of the world she experienced in her life before captivity—and on strategy, fortitude, and hope. When she is most desperate, she visits a house in the sky, high above the woman kept in chains, in the dark.

Vivid and suspenseful, as artfully written as the finest novel, A House in the Sky is “a searingly unsentimental account. Ultimately it is compassion—for her naïve younger self, for her kidnappers—that becomes the key to Lindhout’s survival” (O, The Oprah Magazine).

A House In The Sky. Riveting, couldn't put it down. Kept my interest from beginning to end. Unbelievable story that's written very well.

Incredible. This book was incredible and what she went through is unimaginable yet she persevered with such grace and courage! Recommend this book everyone I come across! Thank you for sharing your journey, Amanda.

Stay strong!. Amanda! This book was amazing. I couldn't keep my eyes off of it. It was such an inspirational book. I can't believe that Amanda Lindhout went through this crazy situation. I hope, Amanda Lindhout can move forward, considering what she has been through. I'm proud of you Amanda, that you were able to survive during those fifteen long months. I hope you are doing well! Stay strong!

Wow the best!. I read a lot and have had the pleasure of reading many great books which I could recommend however I have never felt compelled write a review until reading this book. Not only is it an amazing and riveting true story - it is also beautifully and vulnerably well written. I am touched to the core in reading this story and so thankful for the women who were brave, elegant and extraordinarily talented in the telling. This book ranks up there Viktor Frankl's " a Mans search for Meaning" and I can give no higher praise. "That which does not kill us makes us stronger". Blessings to Amanda, to Nigel and to the co author who wrote the story in a way we could bear to read.

Amazing.. Truly shocking yet so eloquently written - a true testament to the power of the human spirit.

Incredible. An incredibly moving story, very well written.

A House in the Sky. Fantastic book! Could not put in down. I cried, I screamed and I go mad all through the book. Just one amazing women who went through hell. Then turned it all around so she could help others Bless you!

A must read for any traveling woman!. Astonishing yet empowering....

A real profile in courage. I can't begin to do this book justice. It's a remarkable story about a courageous and remarkable woman. I can't imagine the horror and hardships suffered by a woman held hostage by a group of terrorists for 15 months but she does an amazing job of bringing the reader into that nightmare with her. Never, though, does she wallow in self pity or attempt to hide her own fear or weaknesses. She doesn't have to. Without even trying to do so, her strength and tenacity and endurance shine though on every page. The book is so well written that it reads like a finely crafted novel. Once I picked it up, I didn't want to put it down. In addition to bravely suffering through the atrocities she was subjected to she still had it in her heart to feel compassion not only for the people of Somalia but for her captors as well, acknowledging that their war-torn lives and extremist religion had made them into what they were. She works today to help educate the people of that country, especially the girls and women. I admire her greatly and highly recommend this book. If I could give it more than five stars, I would.

A House in the Sky. I was amazed at the strength and courage portrayed by Amanda, during her ordeal as a hostage held in Somalia. I would recommend every young girl out there to read this book. The tears, I shed, while reading this book, were of sadness for the brutality shown her, joy at her being rescued, and amazement at her forgiveness to her captives. Disbelief that people, in the name of religion, could be so cruel and uncaring towards another human being. Do they, honestly, think that they will be rewarded for doing these horrible crimes?

Highly recommend. This book was compelling and very difficult to put down. There was so much suffering and she wrote about it so honestly without trying to demonize her captors. With that being said, WHY on earth would she put herself in that position? Who willingly jumps into a snake pit and doesnt think they will get bitten? She seemed to have no consideration for her family until she needed their help. As I was reading I felt so sorry for her parents, they also suffered enormously.

A House in the Sky. This book was an outstanding read. It was a page turner. It's an amazing story of survival under the most horrible circumstances. Through the pages you learn how courageous and strong a person can be.

House in the Sky. Fabulous book. I highly recommend it. Amanda's courage and strength are inspiring.

Read it!!!!!. This book made it almost impossible to stop reading, even at it's darkest and most vivid passages. It is one of the best books I have ever read and can say it made me cry on several occasions, to which my husband told me maybe I should stop reading it. I am dumbfounded by her courage and will to live, and appreciate her consideration for her readers ability to stomach the horrors of her captivity. Gratuitous mentions of the horror she endured were considerately left out, although the imagery conjured up by the excellent writing was vivid enough to make you stop breathing at some points. READ IT is all I can say-I never write reviews but this was so amazing I had to.

Amazing Experience!. Well written account of a frightening but all to real journey to the underbelly of an unstable and desperately poor African nation. Amanda's strength, determination and spirit shines through her terrifying ordeal and survival at the hands of African mercenaries. This is a book you just have to keep reading until the end!

Life-Changing. The tenacity of Amanda Lindhout in her personal memoir embodies the inner strength and power of the human will. Her courage, perseverance, and resilience throughout the story continue to inspire me every day to trust in my own inner strength and ability to triumph over hardships in my own life. Thank you Amanda Lindhout for sharing your story and neve r giving up.

Strength persevered!. Someone once said that women are much stronger than men. Amanda (and her mom) proved it yet again. Could not put her story down and finished in one day. The horror of what she experienced and endured is hard to fathom. That one person could treat another so animalistic and with such disregard for human decency....everyone has to read this book! So happy and proud you are a survivor. Its hard for me not to wish the worst possible things for your captors, but if you can forgive so will I. Amen.

Good book. Worth the read

Incredible. A life-changing book about one woman's strength that gives the reader insight into what it's like to travel as a single woman.

Couldn't put it down. I won't deny that some parts were hard to read, but this is a glimpse into the mind of a survivor; what it takes to keep coming back mentally. Amanda is someone I would love to know. Very well written book. Glad she could tell her story.

Nothing short of amazing. I am in awe of Amanda Lindhout's beautifully-written book, her story, her strength. I simply could not put this book down. I was captivated and inspired, heartbroken and uplifted. I recommend it to anyone and will be buying it for friends and family for Christmas. I am grateful to Lindhout for sharing her story, and I hope she writes more. Thank you!

Gut-wrenching.... Not for the faint of heart.

Compelling story. I highly recommend this book. The story itself is horrifying, however told with sensitivity that brings you into into Somalia along with the author, sharing her joys, fears, and terror. Very well written - I couldn't put it down!

Powerful and moving. My heart aches for Amanda and Nigel . The writing is so clear, precise, and detailed ...I could see and almost feel her through the pages. I read this book sobbing through so many parts. Taking breaks when needed but this was a life changing page turner of a book. Amanda’s never-ending hope will forever inspire me in difficult situations. Just wow. The most moving book I’ve ever read.

A house in the sky. The strength of the human spirit defies capture and leaps from the confinement of our bodies as so well emoted by Amanda Lindhout. I have a shredded piece of understanding about what starvation, war ravages of body, mind and soul over decades of lost and lawless government can turn people into

Fascinating and well written telling an incredible story. This is an extraordinary book telling a story of incredible perseverance faith and hope. Ms. Lindout is an incredible person to have survived her many struggles. I recommend this book to anyone.

Astounding. I chose this book after seeing the author in an episode of dateline. It's just astounding to me this woman's ability to endure hell, time & time again and return to life. There were moments of naked raw emotion and the truthfulness she shares comes across so beautifully. Bravo to this woman, we have a new heroine.

A house in the sky. I read the book and I was amazed at the courage and intestinal fortitude that Ms. Lindhout displayed throughout her ordeal. I’m sure she left out many of the horrific details about what happened to both her and Mr. Brennan but I was amazed by her resiliency and her courage. I’m not sure I could have survived under the same conditions. I congradulate Ms. Lindhout for a truly outstanding book.

House in the Sky. So well written, I could almost feel the torment she went through. I'm so glad Amanda is home and safe. I pray she finds happiness and pease in her life. Lol, Maryann Black.

Great book!. This was an intelligently written story of an unimaginable experience. I couldn't put it down, and I've already recommended it to friends.

A House in the Sky---a must read. I couldn't put this book down. It was both horrific and inspirational. Thank you, Amanda, for telling your story.

A book that will change your perspective on life. This is hands down one of the most incredible books I have ever read. My life and my perspective have been forever changed. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It's incredibly moving to hear her story and experiences. I giggled. I sobbed. I stayed awake in bed thinking a about this book. I told my friends and coworkers about it. Prepare to be deeply moved.
