White Fire by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child Book Summary

Past and present collide as Special Agent Pendergast uncovers a mysterious connection between a string of 19th century bear attacks in a Colorado mining town, a long-lost Sherlock Holmes story, and a deadly arsonist.

In 1876, in a mining camp called Roaring Fork in the Colorado Rockies, eleven miners were killed by a rogue grizzly bear. Corrie Swanson has arranged to examine the miners' remains. When she makes a shocking discovery, town leaders try to stop her from exposing their community's dark and bloody past.

Just as Special Agent Pendergast of the FBI arrives to rescue his protege, the town comes under siege by a murderous arsonist who-with brutal precision-begins burning down multimillion-dollar mansions with the families locked inside. Drawn deeper into the investigation, Pendergast discovers a long-lost Sherlock Holmes story that may be the key to solving both the mystery of the long-dead miners and the modern-day killings as well.

Now, with the ski resort snowed in and under savage attack-and Corrie's life suddenly in grave danger-Pendergast must solve the enigma of the past before the town of the present goes up in flames.

Horrible. This story was a terrible theft of the Cheshire CT home invasion in 2007 and should never have been released. Shame on you and the writers for stealing a horrible tragedy for your own use. Your story was poorly written and I knew the murderer when I was one third of the way through the book. I should have put the book down after the first murders and put it out of my mind. I tried to give the book zero stars but it wouldn't post my comment unless I gave it at least one.

Amazing Continuation of the Pendergast Series!. I cannot tell you how much I loved this book! Chapter 11 was my favorite chapter only because it was SO chilling! One of the things I love about Preston and Child is how seamlessly they write together. I've read individual books by each, and while I enjoy them, the way their writing styles blend so effortlessly is astounding! This is a must-read and a great continuation of the Special Agent Pendergast series. I'm bummed I have to wait until next year for another!

Would Have Been A 5. Great story, but all the fluff added at the end by the publisher inflated the size of the novel I thought I was buying. Pages not numbered in the print version but counted here are really false advertising.

White fire. I have read every book they have written! Why bring in other characters ... The newer novels just aren't' as well written, interesting or complex.

Another great book in the series. I couldn't put the book down. It is another great read in the Agent Pendergast series. I love his character. If you enjoy this series and Lincoln and Childs books in general ignore any of the bad reviews you see and read this book.

Great read. This is a great book. Very entertaining, well written, and very enjoyable!! I would read it again.

Just Okay. Better than the last two books. Started out really good but fizzled out by mid-book.

White Fire. Yet another wonderful yarn from the best duo since the Everly Brothers!

Awesome. Read every single book they have written together and individually, love each one and purchased each one paperback, pendergast series is definately my favorite.

Moot32. Very entertaining. Dragged in a few spots, though. They were so obviously writing about Aspen with the Hotel Sebastian being the Hotel Jerome, etc. that I was puzzled why they did not come right out and set the book in Aspen.

White Fire. I have read many books by these co-authors and always found them spellbinding. While I enjoyed this book, I have to say it was not one of their better books. I was disappointed.

Another marvelously sinister adventure. Preston & Child do it again by delivering another thrill packed dark story starring agent P!

Not their best. Of all of the Pendergast books, this was the least intriguing. The book was entertaining enough, but seemed to be lacking somehow. Possibly because certain events and details of the book never played out, despite seeming important. It feels as though the authors may have rushed to get this book out and just didn't follow through with their usual attention to detail. Hopefully their next Pendergast novel is more in line with previous books.

Wow! Just wow!. Fascinating story, interesting characters abound in White Fire. Preston and Child have outdone themselves in this latest Pendergast book. Can't wait for more adventures and hope to read more about Corrie and Captain Stacy Bowdree.

One of the best A.X.L Pendergast. I am a slow reader it usually ames me a month or more to finish a good book. I could not put this down finished it in 2 weeks which for me is amazing. If you haven’t read any of the Pendergast novels start form the beginning, with the Relic, reliquary, The Cabinet of Curiosities, Still Live with Crows, Brimstone, Dace of Death, and the Wheel of Darkness. They are all great books. This one was particularly gruesome.

Great book!. Loved it and I hope there are many more Pendergast novels!

White Fire. One of their best!

Time filler. This comes no where near their earlier works, but it satisfies the thirst for a Pendegast story.

An excellent addition. An excellent addition to the Pendergast universe. Plus, if you are a fan of Classic Holmes, there's a special treat.

Predictable. Predictable!!!

Loved this book. All the twist and turns, a must read.

Interesting twist. The game is gruel afoot in this story. And odd twist incorporating Wilde and Doyle in this adventure... Fitting of Pendergast naturally.

Stellar. What a fantastic book. Just when you think these two guys couldn't possibly put together another astonishing tale, again unfolds a delicious thriller. I enjoyed this book as much if not more than their other novels. The insertion of other literature and intertwining stories was very crafty and clever. I am grateful for the internal dictionary in my iPad knowing that I always pick up some new vocabulary while reading their prose. Great job! Cheers, Mark
