Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh Book Summary

#1 New York Times Bestseller

“Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations.

FROM THE PUBLISHER:
Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices.

This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written.

Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to.

FROM THE AUTHOR:
This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book:

Pictures
Words
Stories about things that happened to me
Stories about things that happened to other people because of me
Eight billion dollars*
Stories about dogs
The secret to eternal happiness*

*These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Hyperbole and a half. Funny as all get out.

Hyperbole and a half. Haven't laughed so hard in a very long time!

Awesome. I could not stop laughing. I laughed until it hurt and I loved her willingness to share her story. Great read.

Shut up and take my money!. Dogs, childhood antics, and depression. I couldn't love Allie more if I tried.

LOVE IT. This was one of my favorite humor novels by far. The mixture of writting and comics is perfect. My copy has been lingering amoung friends, and it is one I WILL make sure to get back!!

AMAZING BOOK. Allie Brosh really did a phenomenal, a fantastic job of both writing and drawing. The style of the characters make it seem playful. The choice of words make the book intriguing. A must read!

Hilarious.. Allie Brosh is my spirit animal.

:'D. Ten pages in and I am already laughing so hard I'm crying. Her art and writing style make me feel like I am listening to stories my friends would tell. I love Allie Brosh's work.

Parts were funny.... But overall it was kinds strange. I checked it out from the library--wouldn't pay $7 for it.

Great book.. Ni Not an ideal ebook tho- get a physical copy and enjoy the pictures :)

This book was awesome!!!. My mom just lent me this book and it was so awesomely addictive!! I loved it!! YOU HAVE TO GET IT!!!!!!!!!

AMAZING. THIS WAS SUCH AN AMAZING BOOK IF YOU HAVE NEVER READ THIS BOOK GET IT NOW AND READ IT, IT WILL MAKE YOU LIFE NOT SO MISERABLE😂

HILARIOUS. LOVE IT! It's hilarious and heartwarming. The creativity and honesty in the book makes you feel like Allie Brosh is your best friend. I would personally get the physical copy of the book, though. It is easier to enjoy. Anyway, if you love humor in bizzar yet interesting life stories, THIS is the book for you.

Phenomenal. I laughed, I cried, and I will do it all over agin because this is just that good.

So funny. I read this book and it was so funny. I was literally sweating from how much I had been laughing. So I decided to share it with my sister and even she laughed. Good book. Funny doodles. Great to read if you are having a bad day.

Deeeeeeeeeee. Rrrrrrrrrrrrrppppppp

Don’r waste your money. Bought it based on Bill Gates’ review. Most anyone literally could have written and illustrated this. Just terrible.

Interesting and funny take on depression and self deprivation.. This book is a little all over the place but a very good read. I had a partner who suffered from a lot of the same struggles and I really enjoyed the authors perspective and creativity on her struggles.

Love it!!!!!. I love this book so much and how honest and hilarious that author is!

Allie Brosh Youz a Star. This was both a terrifying and comically accurate exploration into the depths of the human mind ... and dogs. Couldn't put it down. Would recommend to anyone who takes themselves too seriously - absolutely therapeutic in such a strange and unexplainable way. Allie if I ever meet you I will befriend you <3

What I Learned from Hyperbole and a Half. I am giving this e-book (which I read on my MacBook Air and by the way was 656 pages long) five stars. Mostly, it is because I feel compelled to support the Allie Brosh self-worth generator (a.k.a. the tricking machine), and less so because of the quality of her book, her ideas, thoughts, creative talent, and ability to draw stick figures better than me. There are a few important outcomes I experienced while reading Hyperbole and a Half. One, my university tutor who informed me he can read 50 pages in three minutes not only impressed but intimidated me with that fact; however, wherease I normally read about 10 academic pages an hour (or three if it is Derrida-like in nature), I was able to read about 40 pages an hour with this book. I like that, and it makes me feel good about myself. Therefore, I can believe for a moment that I am a fast reader and it is only the fault of Derrida and other people who write so convolutedly complicated that causes me to read 3-10 pages per hour -it is not my ineptitude or inability or lack of superior intelligence that causes that. I learned that from Allie, because I now understand how to make better use of the self-worth generating technique she uses. The other thing I learned from this book is that I have an awful lot in common with dogs, specifically Allie’s dogs. I don’t care for that. However, if I do the thing over and over again, I do believe that people will like it even when they say they hate it… I make poor decisions and lack the awareness to know, etc and so forth and so on. Read the book and you, too, may discover about your own depression and dog-like nature. However, don’t read the last chapter, really, you can’t handle it and should most definitely not read it. You will feel really sh+tty about yourself if you do, because if you buy this book, you are probably like Allie and her dogs (I wish I was the stupid dog, but no… I am the helper dog… who also is a little stupid but suffers more because it has greater awareness than the blissfully stupid stupid dog). Finally, the real reason I bought this book is because it has stick figures (if you like them try the What the French e-book I bought to learn French… it’s hilarious and good for people too lazy to learn French but need to learn it anyway… they should pay me for plugging them but, sadly, I have no affiliation with the authors). I like stick figures, dogs, and people who make fun of -in a very serious way -the dark subject of depression (something I would of course know nothing about at all whatsoever and just no way couldn’t even imagine it happening to a totally non-depressed, not-ever, just no -ah sh+t :(

AMAZING. This book is a 10/10(I’m a harsh judge) it’s hilarious, it sad, it’s everything I want in a book, I have the paper back, and ebook, and I love it. Please buy this book and read it, I have read it 8 times and it is just as good every time, this is my favorite book, (I’m not a robot:)) thanks for the laughs Allie!

Loved it!. I loved this book so much, I bought it twice (you're welcome, Ally!). I originally bought it on my laptop, but then the laptop died a horrible flaming death. I had this urge to read it again. I originally bought it on Amazon, but am really too lazy to remember my user name and password. It was totally worth $6.99 to not go through the torture of remembering those things again!

Brosh conveys it best.. Everything I've wanted in a book. Not only is it humorous, it is highly relatable and easy to read. Some will remark that it gets worse when she discusses her depression but as a past sufferer, I can confirm that no one has ever described this growing problem better than Brosh has. The book is funny throughout, it just becomes less random and more focused but that is okay. I enjoyed every inch of this book and will read it multiple times over. Brosh explains people's niches through her own experiences and is interesting whether you have the same problems or not. Great book. In my top 10 for sure.

Loved this book. Highly recommend it. Already bought friends and family copies. Laugh out loud and cringe worthy all at the same time! There is deep , silly and serious issues all being discussed in a funny and candid way.

Simply Amazing!. Can't wait until her next book!

Ok. I've loved and read this blog for years so of course I HAD to get the book. At first it was wonderful. I laughed out loud for the first 1/3 of the book, even at the parts I'd read before on the blog. But from the depression parts (also from the blog) on I was mostly bored. Worth a borrow, but maybe not worth a buy.

Hyperbole and a half. I cannot remember the last time a book made me laugh outloud but this one did: repeatedly! Brosh is incredibly perceptive about herself, other people, and in particular, dogs. I am so glad that i can follow her blog while hoping for another book.

I just don’t get this. I feel like this is a remarkable book, however I don’t understand the point. It doesn’t end, It just stops abruptly and doesn’t show a theme or any meaning

New favorite book. I don't read unless i have to for school, but this book has captivated me over the past few days and i cant put it down! Great for people who like humorous books that also gives a message.

Omg best book ever I would make love to it. So so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so good!!!!!!!!!😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍🐖

Lol!!!. So funny! My face hurts from laughing so hard!

My life story. It is one thing to write something relatable, but it is much more impressive to write something that makes readers feel as if the book was written about them. I don't know if it is a coincidence but every single story she writes has one of my memories tied to it. I loved every second I spent reading this book.

Read It! You will like it.. Great book, I can not emphasize that enough. I had at least 3 loud belly laughs while reading this book, on top of regular and frequent not-as-extreme giggles....my husband would give me a weird look, and then figure out I was reading the hyperbole and a half book! I think there is a lot to this book, it is pretty light on some aspects (open letter to her dogs) and very deep on other---knowing one self, battling depression, etc, and I think she expresses it very clearly and in a great way. Allie is a talented author, a gifted advocate and an effective communicator. I can not recommend this book enough!

Ima pee!!. This is probably the funniest invention in the whole history of mankind. Read and experience the hilarity and charm of this witty and creative work. (Which is smart people talk for funny as hell😂)

This book is great!. I have only read the sample and I already love it!

Hyperbole and a Half. Amazing book! So funny I literally fell out of my chair laughing at how funny it is.
