iCloud Mini Guide Book Summary

iCloud does a lot of amazing things: It keeps your mail, contacts, calendars, reminders, and notes in sync. It instantly (almost magically) copies that photo you took of your cousin on your iPhone to your Mac, iPad mini, and laptop. It lets you work with your Macs from afar. It helps you find stranded and wayward devices, and lets you know when your friends are nearby. And it does it all for free.

iCloud encompasses so very many different features and fun bits that it’s surprising to realize just how much you can do with a free account. Let Macworld's editors help you get the most out of it. We designed this book to introduce you to iCloud: what it's made of, how to set up an account, and some best practices for backing up your devices.

This book focuses on OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion), Windows 8, iOS 6, and iTunes 11—but we still have some helpful hints for those users with older operating systems. We hope that you enjoy our Mini Guide, but, even more important, that you enjoy iCloud and find ways to incorporate it into your daily routine.

iCloud, in all of its manifestations is a jumble of half-thought out functions. For instance, I did not want an Apple email but was forced, or given the impression I had to have one; either an iCloud.com or me.com address. Now when I send from that device, it tries to default used Ngo an account I do not want to use. And I cannot delete them. The new iCloud Drive storage says it will store my entire photo library, but does not. I have multiple iPads an iPhone, and my PC, as well as two Apple TVs. Each one shows a different set of photos. And I was using a Cloud Match and each device showed a different library of songs. To be compatible with my car, I created a playlist with all of my songs to use one one of the iPods I had. It then told me it would delete everything from iCloud since some songs were not purchased from iTunes. But I had iCloud? More. I was surprised to find videos from my PC on my iPhone after I did a sync, though the videos are not in iTunes but are passed through iTunes to my Apple TV using home sharing. But when I turn on the new Apple Drive, it tells me videos are not allowed. That's fine. But then warns me that will also delete them from my iPhone. Because it won't upload them, it will not permit them to remain on my own phone. Mind you, these are not videos purchased from Apple or even appear in iTunes. But because the will not upload them, they will also delete content that has nothing to do with Apple.
