The First Phone Call From Heaven by Mitch Albom Book Summary

From the beloved author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Tuesdays with Morrie and The Five People You Meet in Heaven comes his most thrilling and magical novel yet—a page-turning mystery and a meditation on the power of human connection.

One morning in the small town of Coldwater, Michigan, the phones start ringing. The voices say they are calling from heaven. Is it the greatest miracle ever? Or some cruel hoax? As news of these strange calls spreads, outsiders flock to Coldwater to be a part of it.

At the same time, a disgraced pilot named Sully Harding returns to Coldwater from prison to discover his hometown gripped by "miracle fever." Even his young son carries a toy phone, hoping to hear from his mother in heaven.

As the calls increase, and proof of an afterlife begins to surface, the town—and the world—transforms. Only Sully, convinced there is nothing beyond this sad life, digs into the phenomenon, determined to disprove it for his child and his own broken heart.

Moving seamlessly between the invention of the telephone in 1876 and a world obsessed with the next level of communication, Mitch Albom takes readers on a breathtaking ride of frenzied hope.

The First Phone Call from Heaven is Albom at his best—a virtuosic story of love, history, and belief.

Couldn’t get through it.. A lot of characters to follow makes you feel removed from the book.

Heart Felt. As always Mitch Albom has a way of making you think and reflect on your own life experiences. Not his best work but one of his best.

Doesn't disappoint!!. Once again.. This man and his steady pen has managed to engage my senses. So descriptively written you almost imagine being along the story.

Great story. I really dd enjoy this books plot and meaning! However I felt the author jumped around to much I would have like slightly longer piece in the story line it felt like you we're just figuring out and getting absorbed and it would switch but def a good read!

First Call geography?. I really looked forward to reading this book. I’ve enjoyed the other Mitch Albom books and expected the same quality in this one. I’m also a Michigan native, like Mitch. I’ve only just started this book, but I am dismayed at the lack of geographical accuracy. In the book, the town this happens in, Coldwater, is located near Lake Michigan in the northern lower peninsula. In reality, Coldwater is located in southern Michigan a little west of the center of the state, nearly to the Indiana border. The book describes Coldwater as being in Alpena County, which is on the east side of the state although it is in the northern part. I don’t know why this bothers me so bad, but you’d think I’m Michigan native, like the author, would want to get things right. I’m also finding the story to be a bit disjointed. The author skips from character to character, practically from one sentence to the next, Without any segue or visual warning that the Author is now describing a completely different character. I may read it to the end but those little inconsistencies like place locations in character jumping make it really difficult to concentrate on the message.

Always up lifting. Make me feel small again. Miss my family very much

Awesome read!. Such a beautiful, inspiring read with an unexpected ending. Must read!

Mitch Albom - First Call You Receive From Heaven. Wouldn't that be grand if it did happen?

Good stuff. Liked this, a quick read and lovely story that kept my attention.

Another wonderful story!. I love anything and everything by Mitch Albom, and I was not disappointed with The First Phone Call From Heaven. I look forward to more.

Makes you think. Whether you believe in heaven or not this book makes you understand the way humans think. There are so many characters that handle the situation different that you actually relate to all of them. And makes you question yourself on how you would handle things. There is no right or wrong just an open mind.

Very interesting read!. A lot of characters to follow still a very well written story. I highly recommend this book

Amazing!!!. I can't believe how great this book was. Must read.

Worth the read. I bought the book to read on vacation. It was a slow read to start. I got frustrated at times but it ended up being a very good book. The last 50 pages make it totally compelling.

Ring. . . ring - telephone!. I read this book in one afternoon/evening. I am not a religious person, I thought at the start of the book that I was going to read alot of holy content and initially was not wowed. As the story progressed, and the characters and story line were built, I was intrigued and I was not disappointed. It made me miss those in my life that have left.

Pandering. Pandering pablum of nonsense exploiting those who need to believe in fairy tales. Sorry but don't waste your time or money on such useless dribble.

LOVED THIS BOOK!!. I am a Mitch Albom fan! I loved this book from beginning to end. I have lost a few loved ones that I dearly miss. It would be awesome if they could communicate this way. It would be nice to have a phone call. But I guess my dreams about them and the conversations we have in those dreams will suffice until I am able to see them and hear them again.

What If???. I have always believed in heaven. That's not a problem. But what if this truly happened. I don't know how I'd react if Grandfather who has been gone 11 years all of sudden called me. This book is gonna make you think...

Awesome!. Another great book by Mitch! Excellent storytelling!

Ok story by meaning a bit obscured. I loved Tuesday's with Morrie and the five people but this one just doesn't seem up to the standard of those two. It was a decent story although highly improbable and you could we where it was going along about page 150.

Great book!. This book really makes you think. It would be so crazy if this could really happen!

Tyler. Bridget. Kennedie’s. Book.

The First Phone Call from Heaven. Another first rate read from the author of Tuesdays with Morrie and many other books! This book was a fabulous story with a surprise twist. Loved, loved, loved this book! Thanks,Mitch, for another beautiful and inspiring story.

Excellent. I didn't think this author could write a better book than "Have a Little Faith" but I was just proved wrong... Mitch Albom is and always will be my favorite author. I couldn't put this one down and didn't have to thanks to iBooks and being able to have it available whenever.

The First Phone Call From Heaven. When at 61 I think I have forgotten my faith, Mr. Albom reminds me that belief is what means the most. I am so thankful for his voice in the crazy world of today. What more can be said?

A must read !!!. Love this author. Every book is so creative, so gripping and touch the human heart. I couldn't put this book down. This is a must read for all!

Love it!!. Great book and is very interesting

Okay. It’s good but not that good.

The First Phone Call From Heaven. Mitch Albom does it again. Thought provoking with a keen sense of writing illusion. This is a must for any Albom fan!

Youn buyun. Through yubuuu

It was ... Okay. I loved a couple of his books, his early stuff, but maybe the magic is gone? Timekeeper was too contrived, and sadly, so is this book. It was predictable and pedantic, while it had the capability to be so much more. I'll eagerly await his next book hoping the magic of Tuesdays and One Moe Day will return.

Poorly Written. This is not a well written book. The dialogue and descriptions are amateur at best. The narrative is clumsy and self conscious. It reads like a short story written by a high school level student. Mr. Albom has written several inspiring memoirs, but with this novel he stretched well beyond his capabilities as a writer.

Page-Turner. Couldn't wait for the revelation. Sully's an admirable, honorable character.

Marvelous!. As usual, Mr. Albom writes a thought provoking and riveting story. I loved every moment. Brilliant!

Not so great as I hoped. Alright in the beginning it was good, but by the end it was bad. It confusing and Mitch Albom ruined Christmas for me. Parents have lied to their kids about Santa Claus and Mitch Albom confirmed it. Thanks a lot. The words were bad. Bad language. The use of the Lords name in fain. To sum this up... bad, bad, bad. Don't give this book to children is a recommendation. I'm going to see if another book is better because I am forced to read another book by my LA class. Maybe it will be better and I'm counting on it. I don't want to ruin the end by I have five dead siblings who, if they would be alive, have many disabilities and I can hear their voices and I can see ghosts not all the time but sometimes. So this book to me hurt me.... because heaven does exist because that is what they tell me. I'm telling you that heaven is real and there is life after death. I remember I dog I never met before I was born. I saw a picture of him, and I told my parents I met him coming down from heaven. HEAVEN IS FOR REAL!!!! I AM TELLING THE TRUTH!!!! THIS IS NOT A HOAX!!!

As always..... Mitch Albom delivers. One of my favorite authors whose novels inspire, entertain, and uplift you. This novel is no exception.

Classic Albom. I received this book from TLC Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. Do you believe in miracles? The people of Coldwater, Michigan certainly did when several people began receiving phone calls from the deceased claiming to be in heaven. But was it true? Was it possible? Or, was it a hoax? These questions, along with those of faith, family, and moving on are all explored in Mitch Albom’s new book, The First Phone Call From Heaven. Punctuated with the history of the invention of the telephone and a man seeking the truth behind the phone calls, Heaven is a quick and humbling read. When I first started reading, I was a little bored. Not because the book was bad but because I recently read The Returned (review here), which was about the deceased physically returning home and the phone calls concept seemed rather benign in comparison. But as I continued reading, I became more invested in the stories of the various characters and the book got better and better. Riding a roller coaster of emotions from disbelief, anger, and understanding, I read this book in less than two days. Not surprisingly, Heaven is predictably Albom’ish, with all the hallmarks of his other books, such as questioning one’s faith and one man’s spiritual journey (not to mention some fantastic quotes). But what struck me as the most endearing was where, in the acknowledgement section, he pays tribute to his wife as the reason he can write about love. Fans of Mitch Albom will adore this book. People like me, who enjoy them but don’t consider them life-changing, will find it to be a quick and enjoyable read.

Disappointing. I have read each of Mitch's books and loved them all, until now. I could not wait for my dedication to finishing to subside. I found 90% of the verbiage a waste in in bland characters with no attachment to my heart. All in all, I found this book neither fun, nor interesting, nor thought provoking. Boring!

Okay. I read what this book was about at the Bookstore and immediately wanted it Due to what it was about. I was hoping This book was based on true events So i could relate and really feel At heart a connection. Im Glad i found out it was fiction First because now i don't want To read it. And i know the author Keeps stating "but what if it was true And could happen." I still don't want To read the book because i have read Many books like this one that were Based on actual events and it made it That much more powerful and i was Able to relate to it. But i have a feeling This book may be true but you may Have released it under fiction which Would probably be the best and safest To do. And yes this could happen To anyone if it was a hoax or not because Ive been in similar situations just not The phone call one. I know 1 person Who had someone call them with Similar info except when the Person tried to call back it Was disconnected which is usually The case with real events

Made me miss my mother. This was a very nice book...I had a hard time putting it down. If you read the book you'll understand....I wish I could talk to my mommy too.

Intriguing. This is the first time I've been compelled to write a book review. I loved this book. Whether you are a believer or a doubter this book is a good read. It keeps you guessing until the end; miracle or hoax. I highly recommend it!

Mitch Albom never fails!. This book was absolutely amazing. Mitch Albom is my favorite author and every book just takes my breath away!!!!

Fantastic!. This was my first time reading a Mitch Albom novel; I enjoyed it thoroughly and would highly recommend it. My one complaint is the use of product placement; it annoyed me greatly and I hope that the author and publisher would cut back on it in future novels.

Disappointed. Liked the idea for the story, but I never really felt like I cared about any of the characters. This book felt very amateurish to me.

The First Phone Call From Heaven. After reading and enjoying Tuesdays with Morrie, I looked forward to this book. Very disappointing story, sophomoric writing, uninspiring ending. I don't recommend the book at all.

First phone call from heaven. Love this author can't wait to read this book all the others were great. Thanks Mitch

I Cannot Wait!. He is my favorite author, I know it'll be fantastic!

Not Tuesdays With Moray.... Too long! Too complicated with the 9 victims that heard voices . Author jumps from victim to victim which confused me. Who is he talking about now? Which deceased person belongs to which living person? Then the Alexander Graham Bell interludes! I got it. The phone inventor, the calls etc. but, the metaphor added nothing and added to the confusion. Read if you must to follow this author. That’s the only reason I bought the book. But, I’m rethinking that.
