The Reason I Jump by Naoki Higashida, Ka Yoshida & David Mitchell Book Summary

“One of the most remarkable books I’ve ever read. It’s truly moving, eye-opening, incredibly vivid.”—Jon Stewart, The Daily Show

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY
NPR • The Wall Street Journal • Bloomberg Business • Bookish

FINALIST FOR THE BOOKS FOR A BETTER LIFE FIRST BOOK AWARD • NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

You’ve never read a book like The Reason I Jump. Written by Naoki Higashida, a very smart, very self-aware, and very charming thirteen-year-old boy with autism, it is a one-of-a-kind memoir that demonstrates how an autistic mind thinks, feels, perceives, and responds in ways few of us can imagine. Parents and family members who never thought they could get inside the head of their autistic loved one at last have a way to break through to the curious, subtle, and complex life within.

Using an alphabet grid to painstakingly construct words, sentences, and thoughts that he is unable to speak out loud, Naoki answers even the most delicate questions that people want to know. Questions such as: “Why do people with autism talk so loudly and weirdly?” “Why do you line up your toy cars and blocks?” “Why don’t you make eye contact when you’re talking?” and “What’s the reason you jump?” (Naoki’s answer: “When I’m jumping, it’s as if my feelings are going upward to the sky.”) With disarming honesty and a generous heart, Naoki shares his unique point of view on not only autism but life itself. His insights—into the mystery of words, the wonders of laughter, and the elusiveness of memory—are so startling, so strange, and so powerful that you will never look at the world the same way again.

In his introduction, bestselling novelist David Mitchell writes that Naoki’s words allowed him to feel, for the first time, as if his own autistic child was explaining what was happening in his mind. “It is no exaggeration to say that The Reason I Jump allowed me to round a corner in our relationship.” This translation was a labor of love by David and his wife, KA Yoshida, so they’d be able to share that feeling with friends, the wider autism community, and beyond. Naoki’s book, in its beauty, truthfulness, and simplicity, is a gift to be shared.

The Reason I Jump. A hoax. A child with Autism did not write this. I gave it one star because it wouldn't let me put zero. Save your money.

Great read. I really enjoyed this book. Raising a child with Autism is not easy and I learned a lot from this book. It help me better understand what my son goes through and how he sees the world. I see similarities with my son that made me smile while reading and some that made me cry. Its a great read.

Excellent. Heartfelt and moving book. Really enjoyed it.

Why I Jump. As the numbers of children diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum continue to rise, it is vital that the general public, as well as educators, learn more about this disorder. This book is a powerful statement supporting the need for understanding and compassion for individuals with special needs. As a teacher who has worked with students with Autism Spectrum disorders, and as the grandmother of a beautiful grandson who has autism, I know how damaging ignorance and disinformation can be to the spirit of special needs individuals. One occupational therapy provider actually told me that there was no such thing as vestibular disassociation. I wish this wonderful book had been available at that time so he could further his obviously limited education. Naoki is to be congratulated for opening a window into a special world so that the rest of us can better understand. Kudos to the illustrators for capturing the essence of Naoki's story through their beautiful artwork. David Mitchell also deserves praise for bring this inspiring story to a larger audience. his is truly a book worth reading.

The reason I jump. What a beautiful boy! You must truly be an angel. To give your insight was extraordinary. I hope everyone reads this book and gains your insight into autism. Truly moving.

The Reason I Jump. Whether you know someone "on the spectrum" or will - this book is freeing. It is hope - for you and for all. The art is connected and exquisite. The story is one-of-a-kind.

A beautiful dimension. This gives a wonderful insight into the autistic world. We have tons of literature from the medical side, the side of families and advocates. This novel gives an eloquent voice to so many that are unable to express themselves. I feel grateful to have read it.

Excellent translation of understanding autism.. This is a great read for anyone, but particularly those who interact regularly with people who are autistic. There is the ability to alter one's previous outlook on how an autistic person acts, responds, and sees the world around them. I highly recommend The Reason I Jump for anyone wanting a quick read.

Why I jump. I have two sons on the spectrum. Loved the title. I have one jumper. I was very disappointed in the book and stopped half way through. It was hard to follow and not how I feel my boys feel inside. Just one child's account attempting to speak for all of those with autism.

The Reason I jump. Wow...what a book. It is very moving and simply magnificent!

Unforgettable. This is the most important book about autism I have read.

Thought provoking insights. Highly recommend this easy to read, enlightening book. I don’t quite know what else to say except that I will try to remember to be more patient with the person in my life who I believe has undiagnosed Aspergers when he’s doing annoying things... he can’t really help himself.

VERY GOOD IN SITE!. Very inspiring and heartfelt. It gives very vivid in site as to how a person with autism perceives the world from their side. It gives the rest of us who have family members with autism or who work with them as educators a detailed understanding of what that person is feeling and a clear and detailed explanation for their behavior; the way they feel in different situations, and how they communicate with the outside world through their eyes and with their bodies. Excellent in site! A must read!

The reason I jump. Awesome! An eye-opening look into the feelings and life of an autistic person. Ways we as a family, friends,co-workers, medical professionals can learn to understand the feelings and fears of these very special gifts sent from God.

Great insight. As a parent of an adolescent diagnosed with Autism it was really interesting to hear from the perspective of the child. This is definitely a must read for all parents, siblings, family members and therapists working with an Autistic child. This story gives me hope that one day my son will be able to connect with me and the world around him.

Beautiful Soul. If we slow down and take the time to listen, there are treasures in those we find so different from ourselves...

The Reason I Jump. This book should be read by everyone who interacts with people with autism. It gives you a glimpse into a mind that works very differently than your own but has the same heartfelt desires as yours. it is enlightening and touching. As an OT that works with many children with autism I am going to read this book a number of times so the lessons contained in it can be fully absorbed by my mind and my soul. I am so glad this is available and I am going to share it with many others.

Amazing book. I love this book. I have a six year old who has autism and after reading this book I feel more informed about why my son does some of the things he do. I have recommended this book to many people to better understand my son. Thank you for writing this book.

Inspires to be patient. It was a privilege to have the opportunity to visit inside a person who has autism. Has recalibrated me forever.

Love it!. I absolutely love this book. Studying and observing autism is very interesting. Reading the words of an individual whom is autistic, is even more interesting. This book was so powerful. I now feel like I can better understand the students that I work with daily. Thank you

By Brianne’s Reviews. This book was a short, sweet, and to the point type book. I would highly recommend this book. Reading it gives you somewhat of an understanding of what someone with autism is thinking. Granted, everyone is different in his or her thinking, but it gives you a general idea. This book would benefit anyone. You never know when you are going to run into someone with autism, and being able to understand and not get frustrated with them when you are interacting with them will help both parties involved.

The reason I jump. Exceptional book!

The reason I jump. Such great explanation of what individuals with autism go through so we can help our kids thrive

Incredible. I have read over 60 books about autism since my son was diagnosed five years ago. I learned more about my son from this book than all of the other books combined. Everyone that has anything to do with my son is reading it now. It is a must read for anyone that loves someone with autism and wants to better understand why they behave the way they do.

Amazing. Eye opening book! Answered so many questions on why they do what they are doing!

Authenticity?. Very disappointed, was probably expecting too much. Like many of the books "from autistic writers", one is always confronted by the discrepancy between their communication abilities, the devious intent of the "translator", and the final product. The constant references to the "normal" human mind coming from a 17 year old autistic kid are a little surprising. The unification of all autisms according to the description of this particular case is also introducing serious doubts about who wrote what. In the end, it is hard to learn anything new or insightful from that book. The questions are also incredibly primitive and somewhat ridiculous.

So disappointed. I read many reviews before purchasing this book. As a teacher and family member of a child on the spectrum, I decided to buy it despite several negative reviews I'm so sorry I did! This book was wholly unbelievable to me. I doubt its authenticity. It was not helpful in the least. Pass this one by.

The Reason I Jump. Terrific...very intrigued by his thoughts..helped to explain the intrinsicitys of autism...leave it to a child to clear it up for us..

Daily Show recommended!. I have a sister-in-law with autism. I also love watching the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Didn't think these two worlds would collide, until the night of 10/1/2013... Written by a Japanese boy with autism, he gives the reader insight on what those with the disorder (or anything on the autistic spectrum) experience, understand why they go through that, and how we can help them cope. I finished this book in one go, and was able to identify with it. Most of the characteristics the author has are ones my sister-in-law has as well, and having an explanation behind those characteristics gave me that "ah ha!" moment. I will be recommending this book to my mother-in-law, as I think she will appreciate it as the mother of a child with autism. Who knew a recommendation by Jon Stewart would pan out well? Nice!

The Reason I Jump. A thought provoking book. A must read for anyone that knows a child with a beautiful mind that is wrapped with autistic tendencies.

Heart-wrenching. I connected with a lot moments in this. The spinning and laughing at old memories. The difficulty at finding the right words. It made me tear up at times. It was a wonderful read.

Awesome!. This is an easy, quick and compelling read! Gives compassionate understanding and explanations to the mysterious actions of an autistic child. Gave me a new perspective on the reasons behind the habits of my 5 year-old, autistic son. Very thought provoking.

Extremely Well Written Book on Autism by a 13 Year Old Autistic Child.. I found this book extremely well written and wish I had read this book years ago when my 21 year old son was first diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome on the Autism spectrum. I feel I could have understood him so much better at the time when he was in school especially elementary and junior high. There were times when I never fully understood what he was going through with Aspergers syndrome (Never going to bed at a reasonable hour when he was a 4 or 5 years old and doing this night after night after night for close to three months wearing myself and my ex-wife down physically and mentally, having an aversion to having steel buttons and zippers on his school and play clothes and freaking out when he had to wear pants with steel snaps when they touched his bare skin, and always wanting to wear sweat pants and t-shirts whether it was a hot 90 or frigid 25 degrees out and becoming upset when he had to wear regular everyday clothes ! ). All of these behaviors were answered in the book by a 13 year old Autistic author along with other questions I could never figure out by myself , with my ex-wife or school officials , or medical professionals who were doing their best to assist my son with his Autism spectrum disability. Finally, If you have a son or daughter or a child of a relative who has Aspergers syndrome or any other disorder on the Autism spectrum I would highly recommend reading this book. It will give you a fascinating insight into a world of unique individuals who can contribute so much to our world and who want to be understood as human beings not as special needs individuals. I know I have become a better person for reading this book because I feel I truly know what my son is facing now from a lay perspective.

The Reason I Jump. Read it in one sitting. Now I can understand others as well as myself more. Stay reading until the end.

Well worth reading. As the grandparent of an autistic child this book highlights our duty to stick with and not ignore our precious gifts of children. Autism is a spectrum disease as is most of life’s challenges. Once you realize your job is, as a provider of an environment to help your child, you can enjoy the daily interactions with your special child.

The reason i jump. WOW!! This book is over the top. It really hit home for me. Having a son with autism it really has opened my eyes to thing I did not understand myself. Everyone should read this book. I promise you won't regret it.

Very touching. I cried reading this

The sample is a forward. The sample for this is the forward for the book. How does that tell me ANYTHING about the contents?

The Reason Why I Jump. The Reason Why I Jump was exactly what I needed. This book speaks volumes to me and It has helped me understand what life is like for my 4 year old son who also has autism. So glad I read it ❤️

Life changing. This book has completely changed the way I see and interact with my autistic daughter. I have read many books on the subject of autism and none have ever had the impact that this one has. An absolute must read for anyone with a family member with autism!!!

Read this. A short book, but so worth it. It will change the way you look at a "different" child.

A Beautiful Illustration of the Power of the Mind. This book illuminates through the innocence of youth and a life lived with the stigma of "disability", a world where the primal power of the mind and our relationship with nature are at one with each other. It prompts the question whether it is the autistic mind that is broken, or rather the unfettered "healthy" mind who rambles on day after day without need for understanding its place and impact on the world. Truly enlightening, inspiring, and beautiful.

Ok. A peek into the mind and body of an autistic person. The writing and tone is nothing at all like the forward (sample) though, which was misleading. A decent read. But only snippets; it will not offer you huge insights or clarity.
