To Catch a Bad Guy by Marie Astor Book Summary

Janet Maple’s stellar career ended with a layoff and her boyfriend of five years told her that he wants to be just friends. When she lands a job at one of New York’s premier boutique investment firms, Janet begins to hope that her luck is finally turning for the better. Not only is she happy with her new paycheck, but things also seem to be looking up on the personal front, as the company’s handsome attorney expresses keen interest in Janet. However, her euphoria is short-lived, as Janet soon discovers alarming facts about her new employer’s business tactics. When her boss dismisses her suspicions as groundless, Janet finds herself confiding to a cute IT engineer, Dean Snider. The closer she gets to Dean, the more Janet is tempted to break her rule of not dating co-workers, but what she doesn’t realize is that everything she knows about Dean, including his occupation and even his name, is a lie.

Dennis Walker is a top-notch white collar crime investigator who will stop at nothing to put culprits away. When an opportunity for an undercover assignment at one of New York’s premier boutique investment firms comes up, Dennis jumps at the chance, adopting a persona of geeky IT engineer, Dean Snider. While he may be an ace at his job, years of experience fail him when Dennis meets Janet Maple and finds himself torn between his professional obligations and his personal desires. Will he have to choose between his feelings and duty, or will he find a way to satisfy both?

A Mystery with Minor Romance. First time reader of Ms Astor’s work. I enjoyed it. The characters are engaging and the situation is interesting, however a little too simplistic. If everyone graduated from the Ivy League schools they don’t seem very smart. If she is such a good investigator why didn’t she figure out why she was downsized? The storyline progresses nicely and the ending starts out satisfying but then just stops. This is the first in a series and the ending prompts you to the next book.

Not bad. I'd suggest this to my younger sister!

good read. I love the characters of the story and the twist and turns. There are parts of the story where I can totally relate. Its definitely worth reading.

Don't read. The category of this book shouldn't be contemporary. There is not a love story. I was really thought out the book. I had to push myself to finish this book. Hoping that the end would be better than the beginning and middle.

Great Book!!!. I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it to other readers! -Dee

Bad book. 🤮 that’s why free

Gray read. Really enjoyed this book. Can't wait to read the next one.

Was that it?. I feel like I haven't finished the book, it's like the author got bored with it.

Great read. So happy I read this book. A great start to the series. Suspense, romance and some comedy. I can't wait to red more.

Not terrible. Good premise for the story, but rather dragged down by the minutiae. Less detail is better than too much if it bogs down the feel of the tale and induces boredom in the reader. It finally picked up and got more interesting but not until I was more than half way through the book. I'd have liked more character development as I thought that the two main characters were quite likable, and perhaps a little less time spent on the main character's best friend, Lisa, who is really just a prissy, stuck up gold digger with a mother who taught her to be that way. I couldn't figure out why her character seemed much more fully rounded out than the two most important characters, Janet and Dennis/Dean. Even Dean/Dennis's back story was more detailed than the main character of Janet. Overall I would recommend this book, and it is nice to read something that isn't overloaded with profanity and gratuitous sexual situations. This book contains none of that and is safe for younger readers.

Great read. I'm not much of a reader, but this book really caught my attention. Loved it!

To Catch a Bad Guy. Refreshingly "G" rated with good characters and a kind ending.

great book!!!!. this was a very great book and the authors style makes the book very interesting. five stars!!!!!!!!!!!

Really Enjoyed This Book. Very cute and easy read. I liked it so well I’m going to read book number two now.

Not expected. This was definitely not a romance novel. The writing & story line were enjoyable but I could not find any sympathy for Janet. 1st she was still tolerating her supposed best friends treatment of putting her down, walking all over her & attempting to run her life at the age of 29. Even tho they hadn't really been close friends in several years. 2nd she was very self-righteous in her attitude towards 'Deans' undercover work when she herself had worked for the DA. As if the DA's office has never used any spies for prosecution! Overall she was a poor to mediocre heroine. I'm more interested in finding out what happens to Dennis & the Bostoff family than anything else about Janet.

To Catch a Bad Guy. Characters are so, so. Not much to the story.

Personal offense. I'm sorry but I'm married to a very handsome IT professional. The writers description of one was so offensive it is going to join the small list of books I started and never finished. There was no need for such an offensive description and had no bearing on the story. I ask that the author thinks in the future how readers may feel about the characters and their jobs. Unless it is a beauty and the beast tale then there is no need to be so derogatory.

To Catch a Bad Guy. I found I had to push myself to get through this book. The characters were superficial, having no depth of character. The storyline was unoriginal, lacking depth. The thing I found most disappointing was the end of the book. I found myself becoming engaged only to find the book ended. The book just closed with an unrealistic change of heart by the CEO and his family. I found myself saying, 'What?!' as I looked for the rest of the book. I was very disappointed and have no desire to read more from this author.

Pstupid. I hate this book so much I want to drive off a cliff while drinking bleach

Nice. Good Read!

Enjoyed!. A good book with good characters. Couldn't put it down. Your turn to enjoy!

To Catch a Bad Guy. This is one of the first books that I have read by this author. I liked the manner in which the characters interacted with each other as they were trying to uncover the bad guys. I would recommend this book to all age readers. LaMar

GREAT!. Loved this book! -Natalie

To Catch a Bad Guy. Easy-to-follow story about underhanded dealings within brokerage firm.

To catch a bad guy. Pretty predictable.

Interesting characters. Story was too drawn out, characters very believable.

From Frying into the Fire. To Catch a Bad Guy is easy to read and it is hard to put down. Losing her boyfriend and downsized out of her job with the DA was hard. She's just back to work thanks to her childhood friend when things start to look suspicious on the new job. How will survive this new threat to her law career? Smart and resourceful, Janet Marple must pull out of another mess without loosing her reputation or her friends. Very enjoyable, can't wait for the next book!

Interesting. I though this was a great book, I enjoyed reading it

Ending?. I liked the story enough and thought there was something there between Janet and dean but that just suddenly stopped. The story was detailed until the end where it just abruptly stopped. Bad kinda caught, the end. Where's the details in that? I didn't like to be left hanging.

Random background stories on non main characters. This was super boring. Long moments spent thinking of past experiences. The climax was not climatic at all. Chapters wasted on those that are not the main characters.

Hmmm... I liked the book but at points it got very boring, I skim read quite a bit of it but finished it having learnt something and I liked the whole concept, would recommend but probably not to young readers for the simple fact that it is quite hard to follow (law etc...)

Dire!. Just awful, totally predictable one dimensional plot, no pace, uninteresting characters, cliche after cliche, sexist stereotyping rubbish.

Enjoyable. I am actually enjoying reading for once, seems a real good read so far!

Boring read. Couldn't finish reading this book as it was too boring. Characters are flat and uninteresting, storyline lacks real conflict other than the investigation. Although I didn't finish reading it is so predictable that I can guess the ending. Don't waste your time reading even if it is free.

Enjoying this book. Well, the story is very exciting.

A little boring... Sadly I found this book boring. There was no real suspense or mystery and no romance so I was left wanting something more.

To Catch a Bad Guy. I really enjoyed this book. Thank you Marie Astor for your writing skills and your imagination. Keep up the good work.
