The Hotel on Place Vendome by Tilar J Mazzeo Book Summary

Set against the backdrop of the Nazi occupation of World War II, The Hôtel on Place Vendôme is the captivating history of Paris’s world-famous Hôtel Ritz—a breathtaking tale of glamour, opulence, and celebrity; dangerous liaisons, espionage, and resistance—from Tilar J. Mazzeo, the New York Times bestselling author of The Widow Clicquot and The Secret of Chanel No. 5

When France fell to the Germans in June 1940, the legendary Hôtel Ritz on the Place Vendôme—an icon of Paris frequented by film stars and celebrity writers, American heiresses and risqué flappers, playboys, and princes—was the only luxury hotel of its kind allowed in the occupied city by order of Adolf Hitler.

Tilar J. Mazzeo traces the history of this cultural landmark from its opening in fin de siècle Paris. At its center, The Hotel on Place Vendôme is an extraordinary chronicle of life at the Ritz during wartime, when the Hôtel was simultaneously headquarters to the highest-ranking German officers, such as Reichsmarshal Hermann Göring, and home to exclusive patrons, including Coco Chanel. Mazzeo takes us into the grand palace’s suites, bars, dining rooms, and wine cellars, revealing a hotbed of illicit affairs and deadly intrigue, as well as stunning acts of defiance and treachery.

Rich in detail, illustrated with black-and-white photos, The Hotel on Place Vendôme is a remarkable look at this extraordinary crucible where the future of post-war France—and all of post-war Europe—was transformed.

The Hotel on Place Vendome. Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, just one criticism the Duke of Windsor and Mrs. Simpson spent the war years in the Bahamas not Bermuda.

Verbose.... Long winded sentence structures disrupted with parenthetical wanderings leave you exhausted after just the prologue. The author has a peculiar habit of scrambling the sentence flow with unnecessary and redundant phrases. Almost like English is not their first language. Comprehension is most natural when the basic English sentence structure is utilized; Subject / Verb / Object. Instead the author mashes up multiple thoughts into a single sentence and separates one thought with another, isolating verbs from their objects, so that by the time you reach the period, you forgot what you read. Take this excerpt for example: “On damp evenings, the hard pavements and the worn stone façades that encircled the Place Vendôme, an octagonal circus in the city’s ultrafashionable first arrondissement, sent the sounds of wheels and horses’ hooves and shrill women’s voices off in clattering echoes that seemed to come back from all directions like a surprise assault on the senses.” There's 3 distinct thoughts in that "sentence" that would be much better delivered in 3 sentences, or least each thought kept continuous unto itself. While that one sample might not throw you off too much, try getting through a whole chapter of this. Apart from confusing grammar, there is also a lot of redundant phraseology. By the time you've gotten into chapter two, the author must have said a dozen different ways “The opening of the Hôtel Ritz in Paris was the society sensation of June 1898." The impact is lost after the third mention. I'm not advocating that remedial grammar and writing should come at the expense of creativity, but persistently odd grammar will just make a book inaccessible for most readers. I was so excited for this book because I love the subject matter. But I couldn't take it after chapter two. Hope you have better luck. Bye bye $12.99 (or whatever it cost me). Reader beware.

"Grand Hotel" on Place Vendôme. This is Hollywood not history. The plot could be just an update of the 1932 classic movie but with impressive footnotes, references and sources added at the end. While two world wars are fought and the Cold War starts and ends and the Euro-zone comes into being, the principal focus is who is in bed with whom (often at the Ritz). May be fascinating but misses being meaningful.
