Things That Matter by Charles Krauthammer Book Summary

From America’s preeminent columnist, named by the Financial Times the most influential commentator in the nation, a must-have collection of Charles Krauthammer’s essential, timeless writings.

A brilliant stylist known for an uncompromising honesty that challenged conventional wisdom at every turn, Krauthammer dazzled readers for decades with his keen insight into politics and government. His weekly column was a must-read in Washington and across the country. Don’t miss the best of Krauthammer’s intelligence, erudition and wit collected in one volume.

Readers will find here not only the country’s leading conservative thinker offering a passionate defense of limited government, but also a highly independent mind whose views—on feminism, evolution and the death penalty, for example—defy ideological convention. Things That Matter also features several of Krauthammer’s major path-breaking essays—on bioethics, on Jewish destiny and on America’s role as the world’s superpower—that have profoundly influenced the nation’s thoughts and policies. And finally, the collection presents a trove of always penetrating, often bemused reflections on everything from border collies to Halley’s Comet, from Woody Allen to Winston Churchill, from the punishing pleasures of speed chess to the elegance of the perfectly thrown outfield assist.

With a special, highly autobiographical introduction in which Krauthammer reflects on the events that shaped his career and political philosophy, this indispensible chronicle takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the fashions and follies, the tragedies and triumphs, of the last three decades of American life.

Memorable. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Every time I listen to or read Krauthammer, I learn much about governmental policy and even more about how masterful someone with his intellect can use the English language. I'm amazed by his analogies, references, and vocabulary that paint the pictures of his thoughts so clearly that even us mortals can follow. I wish all politicians were required to read this book to understand the proper role the U.S. should play in the world. "Decline is a choice."

Things That Matter. I tried, I tried real hard to dig in on this book. I love Charles opinions and ability to see the big picture on important domestic and world issues. This book just seemed long winded to me on things that really didn't grab me. To each his own opinion, some may love this book, I didn't .

Great read. Some of the articles are very enlightening, a few I didn't finish reading. Some of ones he wrote about Jews were, well ....

Things that Matter. I purchased the book one week ago and it says that is still down loading. I cannot delete the book nor read the book. What do I do? morningstar601

Things that matter. The book was highly insightful I would recommend it strongly to other readers. Portions of the book for like a trip down memory lane of current events. I look forward to his next piece.

Things That Matter. Not a book you pick up and read in a day. Keep a dictionary nearby and enjoy a learning experience in content, thinking, and vocabulary. I viewed his collection of writings as educational, and more so, his attention to detail including humor, sports, and humility. What a relaxing and enjoyable read. Wish I could share a meal with the good doctor, I'd buy as I need help being a Cubs fan.

Things That Matter. A clear, concise, logical discussion of where the United States is, presently, where we have come from, and where we are likely headed. Mr. Krauthammer brings a unique perspective from a background as physician, Washington insider, and journalist. His viewpoints and commentary will be recalled for the next two decades as we awaken from our socio-political lethargy.

Things That Matter. Cleaner logical incisive geopolitical and social analysis. A great read. Krauthammer for president!

Junk. This is the pinnacle of ghost-written garbage. It's really just a self-aggrandizing, boring, convoluted list of unremarkable and predictable gripes without a point or insight and without a rational prescription for what should be done after all whining is over. This is what uninformed people read to feel intellectual. Just junk.

Things That Matter. Krauthammer's book is one to read and ruminate. It's really a collection of short stories. I found each story uniquely written in Krauthammer's neatly crafted prose. The story of his brother directing the ER on how to treat his emergency illness is fascinating. And the light in which the author describes boarder collies has persuaded me to think fast and hard about acquiring one. Thank you Charles.

Things That Matter. This was a perfect book reflecting Krauthamer’s thinking. I miss him.

These things matter. Concise, compelling and powerful. A singular and distinctive voice which pierces apathy, ridicules dreamers and opens our eyes to the proud America we are and can continue to be. Bravo Dr. K!

It's the politics . . .. Dr. Charles Krauthammer has published an intriguing collection of his writings. He did not initially intend for it to be political. He was interested in things that truly mattered, such as art, baseball, family, all things beautiful. However, he realized that as ugly as politics is, unless you get it right, the rest is in peril. It is highly relevant into today's politically charged environment.

Every true American needs to consider this. Well written and organized One may not agree with the authors positions but surely must conclude they are well considered and logical One of the easiest "reads" Ever and thoroughly well done

As Plato once said. . .. No one can better combine historical events, current issues, and future visions and articulate them into plain common sense than Dr. Krauthammer. As Plato once said, “Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.” While most in Washington are busy making noise, he was busy making sense for the past 30 years. I will pass this book down to my five kids as a must-read when they are ready to embrace wisdom.

Review of "Things That Matter". Intelligent, witty, refreshing and an insightful look at an outstanding man's sojourn through adulthood and his political awakening. To put it in chess terminology which Dr. Krauthammer loves, "check mate." I dare any liberal to challenge his reasons with facts. Challenge they will, succeed they will not. This is a must read for every high school senior. Captain Ron Campana

Things that Matter. Brilliant and gifted doctor with more than one talent. I filter the news through him. His command of historical context elevates him above other pundits.

Things That Matter. I have been reading and listening to Charles Krauthammer for many years and I really appreciate this compilation of some of his columns, he is always so on point.

Things that matter. This is a great read. The man is a genius!!

Things That Matter. Great Christmas gift for your liberal buddies!

#12 Reviewer is an idiot. Enough said.....

Brilliance!. My only weak criticism is that I had to frequently stop and look up the meaning of many words he utilized in his writings... a compliment and testament to his vast and knowledgable use of the English language, but from which I ultimately benefited by expanding my own personal vocabulary. A well written compilation of opinion pieces, but backed up by historical context, reasoning and facts. I miss Charles’ wisdom and wit already... Eternal rest to a truly brilliant mind and man gone too soon.

Great Read. I'm a fan. Glad to get more insight.

Charles, please run for president!. "Things that Matter" begins with some light, "remember America in the good old days" accounts that first and effectively humanizes an author who is best known for his dry genius and and no-nonsense public demeanor. Shortly after his warmth is established (or uncovered) readers are introduced to the real crux of the nation's issues that are setting us adrift; not merely internally, but internationally as well. My assumption is that if you are reading the book, you know what they are already; however, my interaction with more people, both friends and strangers, are starting to correct me otherwise., unfortunately. Without any explicit or overt smugness, Charles Krauthhammer makes his arguments, point after logical point, without ever insulting the nation or her pitiful voters. He includes brief outlines on why our foreign strategies (or lack thereof) have failed or will fail. He also purveys the successes of our past. What's more, he shows where two schools of thought (globalism & realism) might actually work together most effectively. He analyzes history and brings relevant comparisons forward for further thought and provides some fine insights to consider, particularly about our current reputation in the international community (aren't we all just exceptional together) and how we want - need to be perceived (the true uni power we need to be). I found myself nodding in agreement and thinking, finally, logic!! I would like to have seen him finish the book with more recent analyses on more recent problems, such as ISIS, Israel/Gaza and his thoughts on Obama's diversionary tactics (climate change...? Huh?!) And I would die a happy woman if he would run for President in 2016. Between now and then, I would buy a copy of this book to throw at Obama's head. After all, he'll need something to read as he flies in Airforce 1 to his next golf game....

Amazing book! Real page turner for me!. I've always liked this author as his deep understanding of complex matters are impressive enough! However, I love that he can articulate complex subjects in a way that the common citizen like me can readily understand. As I read some of the chapters I thought to myself, "wow, Dr. Krauthammer sure has this issue pegged", only to find at the end he was addressing the subject 10-20 years BEFORE it came to be! To me, so many of his views and opinions over the years have been quite prophetic. Bottom line for me? Great read covering a vast array of interesting subjects! Highly recommend!

A MUST. Great read.

Things that matter in the world of irrelevant things.. A pampered princely persons priorities are so much removed from the rest of us who have to punch a time card. Those who work for a living make up a larger share of this nation than those removed from the rest of us. Why in the %#¥£+~> are we giving this "author" any deference? We've been following pieces of fecal matter of his ilk since 1981 can we finally start ignoring people like him and finally think for our selves for once.

Things That Matter. This book matters. Krauthammer is a national treasure.

Charles will make you think!. When is the last time a book made you think; really think? Charles will make you think about our country, our politics, and your place in it. Motivation, I feel, is an underlying subject in this book. Be a part of making America remain strong. Reject the notions of American decline. He doesn't say it in those terms, but forces you to connect to the positive intellectual process of discovering that we can keep the America, and world that we all know is still possible. He presents numerous outlines for this. Logic; the halmark of Charles Krauthammer's presentations are represented here in full bloom. Who can do that in a period of thirty years of writings. Charles can! Stay strong Charles, and keep educating us.....and the world.

Things That Matter. CK is a brilliant historian and political analyst who is able to look into the future and with the reflection of the past visualize where our world is headed! You cannot read his book and not be challenged into taking an active role in our destiny! This genius of thought and word breaks down the mysteries of civilized worlds and sounds the alarm for The United States of America to do what is necessary to return to its role of leadership in a global society!

"Things that Matter" - yep, they do. Worth your time. This is a wonderful read and very thought provoking, that is, for those willing to open their minds and see the world the way it is, rather than the way they would like it to be. It is a collection of essays and short articles both from years past and current events. It wasn't until I got halfway through it that it dawned on me that this book offers, in my opinion, substantiation for a quote made long ago, "Those who do not learn from history are destined to repeat it". A data point for "Cause and effect". AJ

Irrelevant. The title raises expectations that lead to disappointment very early in the book. A pragmatic attempt by the author of making a quick buck by recycling a number of articles written over many years and packaging them under a profound sounding title.

Should be required reading. This book should be required reading for every US high school/college student. It is enlightening and terrifying at the same time. Mr. Krauthammer is a sane and deliberate voice of reason in the insanity that is our world today. At times, I had to put down this book because it made me want to shout, "Does NO ONE else see that the emperor (lower case "e" is deliberate) has NO CLOTHES????!!!!" R. Holland Little Rock, AR

Great Book. One of the best books I have read in years. A pleasure to read, thoughtful, well written and humorous. Delightful to read someone who has thought so deeply about the major issues of our day. Give it to all the liberals on your gift list to show them what true conservative principles are.

Some People!. The reviewer who complained about not receiving his download and gave Charles' book a 1 star, you're a moron! Call iTunes and straighten it out, don't blame the author for your incompetence. As for the other one star reviewer (William), you obviously do not know the importance of what matters and people like you are why our Country is so messed up.

Great. If you've read any of his works, you know the book is great.

Things That Matter. Awesome read! I always love to listen to what this brilliant man has to say, on whatever topic it may be that he is speaking on. He certainly is super intelligent! I wonder how is it that someone this intelligent, informed, and is a lover of his country, is not in a Political Position?

Good however!. Very good articles but not knowing the time frame till the end of the article was not good!

Things that Matter--really do. For a political lay person, this is a text book that both informs and challenges. I finish it with a better understanding of why American exceptionalism and idealism isn't honored by all, but also encouraged that we haven't lost so much ground that we can't still be the the most beneficent hegemon this world could hope for.

Lessons on life and the proper use of power. Be prepared to have a dictionary nearby. Krauthammer's stunning vocabulary will stump even the most learned on every page. His lectures on the inevitable decline of the United States, on its present Obama laid path, should guide every Washington politician's conscience and governing philosophy. In the " in case you missed him" category, this book catches you up on the thinking of this nation's finest political commentator. Joe Garrett

Things That Matter. One of the finest and most intelligent books I have ever read.

Things That Matter. Absolutely terrific! Krauthammer is extremely articulate and inspiring to read. His thoughts are clear and his mind is like a steel trap! Keep it up,Charles!
