Duty by Robert M. Gates Book Summary

From the former secretary of defense, a strikingly candid, vivid account of serving Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

When Robert M. Gates received a call from the White House, he thought he’d long left Washington politics behind: After working for six presidents in both the CIA and the National Security Council, he was happily serving as president of Texas A&M University. But when he was asked to help a nation mired in two wars and to aid the troops doing the fighting, he answered what he felt was the call of duty.

Inside the wars. Great book about the the fight behind the wars. Gates is the soldiers secretary

A must read. This book is unexpectedly meaningful in many levels — honestly, having Robert Gates served the Bush administration I really didn’t have much regard for him and it was only because of the fact that I am a political junkie that decided to read his book - glad I came across such an important piece of history. Thank you Mr. Gate, for your service and integrity.

What America needs to hear and do. If only America could have more of these non-political managers, maybe we'd be better off. This book points out on both sides, republican & democratic that the center is not a bad place to be.

Didn't get the book. I paid 11.99 and received part of the forward. Pictures were all garbled. Lots of pages labeled "errors.". This was supposed to be a 650 page book, and all I received was the acknowledgments. Thanks a lot iScam.

Best Book Ever. Easy to read. The last sentence in the last chapter ..about the cemetery in Arlington ..says it all. What a book.Must Read.

Required reading. A detailed and penetrating look into the Policymaking and national strategy process in Washington, including frank criticism of what the US does well, and where improvement is needed. Anyone interested in international affairs, diplomatic history, and political science should read this remarkable book.

Not enough stars. I wish there were more then 5 stars to rate this book. What an extraordinary man. This book shows his passion and love of this great America. It also shows the true workings of our gov't system. All Americans should read

A Very Personal Memoir. An engaging, well written narrative. The descriptions of personal interactions with all the components and personalities on the national and geo-political stage of the time are clear, detailed and educational. One of the two best books I have read by figure of the author’s stature.

Wish we had more like him. A great read of someone serving in the highest levels of government. Gates' stories are credible. His lack of partisanship and willingness to criticize either side of the aisle is refreshing. If only more served like him. Serving for something larger than himself.

Looking fwd to reading. I couldn't agree with you more Fladadoo. Mr Gates was the guest speaker at my daughter's graduation at UW in Seattle. He's certainly a VERY interesting and humorous speaker and I'm looking forward to reading his book!!!

Great!. Thank you Secretary Gates!!!

Billy Fatbowe. Just got the book... It's so obvious ... That the truth hurts... Haters will always hate...

The Truth hurts!. Finally someone on the inside coming out to tell the truth! However, Liberals don't want to read the truth! Thank you Mr. Gates for being brave to write what it is really like working with someone like Obama.

A great book. Interesting, well worth reading. Talks about the successes and failures as Secretary of Defense. Gives a great insight on the challenges of running a large organization.

Insightful. As a memoir, I found this insightful and balanced in what Secretary Gates accomplished, and in areas that, looking back had come up short or made the wrong choice. It reinforces that our legislative branch is a mess. Self-serving, egocentric, narcissistic, political pawns who over rate themselves and contribution to the nation. As a veteran (peacetime) I'd like to think that the Secretary always has our back. A veteran -- whether on active duty, discharged, retired or in the reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to the United States of America for an amount of up to, and including, his life.

The truth that liberals always hate.. I can always predict a book that brings out the truth. Liberals always hate it even before reading it. The only hope for this country is that men of courage like this will continue to expose the lies of liberalism and that fair minded people will see the truth and and kick the liberals out of power.

I Will Pre-Order. I definitely will pre-order and read thoroughly before making my mind up or prejudging the author. Wish others would too :)

Duty. If Di Maggio can rate the book one star without reading it I'll give it five without reading it. Let me guess Di Magg.......blending heart, cool-ade drinking liberal?

Duty by Gates. "Finally" the TRUTH comes out! It's about time the right people come forward and tell America what's REALY going on behind closed doors!

Good read. This book provides a large amount of information and insight about the war and what happens on Wall Street. This is a well written book.

We have to pass the book before we know what's really in it. I was able to sign onto the Apple Web Site just now, right after hearing about the role out, and flawlessly ordered it. Can't wait to read the book after being able to pre-ordering it today. Soon I will be able to have an informed opinion, and be able to write an intelligent review.

Duty by Robert Gates. Compelling, important and powerful in its clarity, intensity, commitment and description of the frustration that Secretary Gates felt but rarely conveyed. Clearly, he performed his duty and did so with honor, high competence, motivated by a fundamental ethic of always placing his Country, his/our soldiers before his own needs and ego. A great history and a great personal story that all can learn from and, hopefully, be motivated to emulate. Thank you Secretary Gates for your book, and thank you for your service. T. Wolf, Boulder, CO.

I was moved. It brought tears to my eyes. Made me proud that we have such a leader in America. Thank you Bob Gates.

MSgt (Ret). I trust Secretary Gates, more than others, past and present. Outstanding book and a Remarkable man. Should be mandatory reading for the Congress, the Executive branch and all who serve.

Disrespect. I know that this book holds truth, but how disrespectful can you be in order to write this? In a way, he betrayed this country just by writing this book. How could somebody of this rank sink so low as to insult the current president? So much for true patriotism and loyalty.... Personally, I think this is just a way to make money because it's a little to late for this hateful criticism, correct?

Preordered and waiting. I have always admired Gates but am buying this book to see what is written about Hillary. I am Republican, but may vote for her if she runs, depending on what is revealed in this book.

From a Combat Vet to the Boss. I served in four combat zones over 25-years with our armed forces. I served with members every US uniformed service and many allied forces. I served in conflicts under several presidents. I have served with some of the highest ranked leaders in our uniformed military. Secretary Gates has always struck me as one of our most experienced and gifted civilian leaders. Without regard to your views of his politics he is, in my opinion, a true American hero. I have pre-ordered and will read the Secretary's book. In the discourse that is our current political quagmire we are blessed to have had someone in that key role focused on the interests of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines as well as the combat hardened civilian team that make our military go. God Bless Secretary Gates.

Duty. Robert Gates is really into Robert Gates.

Irrelevant & Misleading. Kind of late to trash talk the administration in order to make money selling your little book ! It is not the way "I" operate participating into this by buying this book that's why I dismiss this one. Revelations came to late Gates, but not to late to make a buck obviously. When it is sensitive as letting kids go to war you should be ashamed to not talk then -

Defense. Interesting, but rather self-serving. Sad for our young men and women in our services. I certainly appreciate his (Gates) personal caring for the troops. On a professional note, I would give him a lot more credit as Secretary had he been able to attack & arrest the horrible money waste within Defense.

Garbage. A good move to make some money, other than that, just garbage.

Nice read.. It was a very informative book. Even though Gates is a Republican he still manages to come across pretty unbiased. He does take a few pot shots at specific Democrats by name and when he criticizes Republicans he does so generically without mentioning party or names. The biggest surprise is Gates glowing endorsement of Hillary Clinton. I did not expect that. He respected Bush, but didn't agree with the Iraq war based on fabricated evidence. He respected Obama, but felt Obama went back on some of his promises. He had high praise for both Presidents overall. Gates thinks politics has become way too polarizing and biased. He thinks the fringe of both party's control each party and the moderates have left the building because of two reasons. The media has taken sides and the re districting has made it so political party's are guaranteed victory in their areas and only have to pander to the fringe in their party. He basically said politics in Washington is a complete cesspool of angry blowhards only caring about reelection on both sides. Of course we all already know that. Thanks for your service to our country Gates. If all Americans were half as patriotic as you and place country above politics this would be a much better place.

Duty. Too much "me'n and me'n. Boring.

Duty. He said duty

Duty. I am amazed at the five star reviews from people who haven't even bothered to buy and read the book. Buy it and read it. Secretary Gates seems to be trying to salvage his legacy and seems to be able to read peoples minds since he attributes motives rather freely. The book is what I figured it would be. Secretary Gates is just trying to salvage his legacy and pointing the finger at others. If you watch Fox News it is the perfect book for you.

Proud amërican. How comforting to read of secy so concerned with our military!! Thanks to Mr. Gates and to his wife... Very much enjoyed reading inside story of our government and military going ons.

Wow. As a vet I wish I could thank him for all his sacrifices and his insanity for putting up with a ungrateful congress

Eager to read. I have long pondered just how messed up and anti-American the Obama Administration is- now we'll get a peek under the cloak of secrecy of what was supposed to be the "most transparent" Administration ever! Lies, deception and usurpation of the Constitution and the Balance of Powers set up by the Founding Fathers- that's already factually occurred! I cannot wait to read of the sources of the ridiculous "rules of engagement" forced upon our soldiers and what the Administrations true purposes were/are for the castration of the finest fighting forces - the men and women of the United States Military. Will Gates touch on the wholesale dismissal (cover story of retirement) of top Military Officers in ALL BRANCHES of the Armed Forces, by the Obama Administration, for POLITICAL reasons? Will he dish on Benghazi, and why the Military Response Teams were ORDERED to Stand Down as they were launching rescue missions along with heavy air support, that would most likely have saved the lives of our Ambassador and the brave security stationed there augmented by the former Seals who were off site that RAN towards the fight and held the ground secure waiting for the help that was ALWAYS sent under all other Administrations! Hopefully some of the "sheeple" of this handout dependent nation will wake up and realize the peril this Administration has placed us in, and come to know the deliberate nature of its actions! I'll be interested in how the Governmentally Controlled press will review and report on the popularity of this book and the information contained within it.........maybe Jay Carnie will shave his beard to draw attention away from it? Keep the Kabuki theater going White House, nobody sees those people moving the sticks!

Not as harsh as I would like. This chronology comes across as how to behave in an organization and not say or do what you know is right. Gates spent too much time inside the beltway to be objective. I was hoping for much more but he didn't deliver. His Love and admiration for the troops is genuine but doesn't make up for praise of Clinton or Obama. His low estimation for congress is right on.

Duty. A great insight into the inner workings of the Secretary of Defense and the President's office (both Bush and Obama) and all the international dealings.

Duty. The book contains quite a lot of inside story which was not available by reading the news paper articles. Nonetheless, I felt that the author goes into too much unnecessary details which the general reader may not be interested. This book needed a real good editor. On the whole, though I struggled to finish the book, it is very boring.

Selfish Secretary at War. It’s despicable that after playing snake underground to portray the best and honest character to the men and women in uniform, he came to betray his trust because of money and popularity. His credibility and loyalty to our military is now put to question.

Thank you Mr. Secretary. At once poignant, heartfelt, sincere, frank, self deprecating, and almost thoroughly gracious. The only criticisms I could come up with are the glowing reviews of two Secretaries of State I never would have hired but certainly would have fired; the glossing over in two paragraphs or less both Tunisia and Ben Ghazi; and recommending Bloomberg for anything but perpetual point man in Helmand, let alone a cabinet position. After those, this was such a great read, and historically significant work I would recommend any student of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, or global geopolitic give it a read. In fact, if it were up to me I'd require SecDefs to write one, and make this required reading in high school government across America. This old sergeant salutes you sir.

Great book. Great book
