The Matchmaker by Elin Hilderbrand Book Summary

In this moving story about losing and finding love again, a woman sets out to find the perfect matches for those closest to her.

Forty-eight-year-old Nantucketer Dabney Kimball Beech has always had a gift for matchmaking. Some call her ability mystical, while others, her husband, celebrated economist John Boxmiller Beech, and her daughter, Agnes, who is clearly engaged to the wrong man, call it meddlesome. But there's no arguing with her results: With 42 happy couples to her credit and all of them still together, Dabney has never been wrong about romance.

Never, that is, except in the case of herself and Clendenin Hughes, the green-eyed boy who took her heart with him long ago when he left the island to pursue his dream of becoming a journalist. Now, after spending twenty-seven years on the other side of the world, Clen is back on Nantucket, and Dabney has never felt so confused, or so alive.

But when tragedy threatens her own second chance, Dabney must face the choices she's made and share painful secrets with her family. Determined to make use of her gift before it's too late, she sets out to find perfect matches for those she loves most.

The matchmaker. My heart is FULL!!! Once again you have outdone yourself. A beautiful story about love and family.

The Matchmaker. At first I was put off by the characters and their names, but the book grew on me and I ended up loving it and crying at the end. The only thing I don't like about Ms. Hilderbrand's books is that she injects her political beliefs, albeit in a subtle way, into every single book. It is not necessary to any of the stories, and she does it every time.

Love love it!. Loved it! I've read all of Elin's books and I loved them all. The Matchmaker is my new favorite :)

Moving, touching, excellent!. Must get to Nantucket. Beautiful, well-written, all about love and forgiveness. Another excellent book by Hilderbrand - she does not disappoint.

Horrible. I usually love these books but this book is absolutely an offensive waste of time. It is the most disgustingly stereotypical white supremacy bunch of drivel. Every one in the book went to Ivy League schools and having affairs. It is really in poor taste.

Lovely. I enjoyed this book,as much as do all of Elin's books. Sad but satisfying.

Waste of my money. And big waste of my time

Was this a Danielle Steele Book?. UGH - boring. The dialog, the repetition. The best thing about this whole story was having what’s-her-name (I forgot already, main character) die of cancer. How sad is that?! This is the third Elin Hilderbrand book I picked up thinking there must be something I am missing ... but nope, I’m done!

The Matchmaker. Two words: Depression Session While her books are beach candy with just enough current food and fashion trends inserted to feel a bit more upscale than the average beach book, this is a disappointment. Too much bummer for my summer with the abandoning Mother, life long anxieties, and the all time buzz kill.....cancer. I want my money back. And an ice cream cone.

The Matchmaker. I love to read, but this story just didn't hold my attention nor sound plausible enough to identify with. Found myself skimming to the end.

Thoroughly enjoyed!. Great summer book especially with the Nantucket setting. Plot a bit far-fetched, but a good read.

Not bad. Was not one of my favorites but grew on me the more I read it.

Depressing. I have read all of Hildebrand's books. I could not finish A Beautiful Day, but I thought I would give her one more chance by reading The Matchmaker. I didn't like any of the characters. I ended up skimming the last 100 pages. This book and the loss of any future good books is depressing. This is definitely not your go-to Nantucket beach read. Skip it.

The Matchmaker. Absolutely wonderful story--so real I cried a couple of times!

Short but lovely. What a lovely book. I don’t pay this much on a book but this is worth it.

The Matchmaker. Elin Hildebrand just keeps getting better. I loved this book.. Loved the characters. When I read the descriptions I wasn't sure I even wanted to spend the money. But she didn't let me down! Great book !

SO SAD but so good. I was 100% unprepared for how sad this book was, having not read any of the reviews before purchasing and being familiar only with other books by Elin that feature happy endings. So while I wouldn't characterize this as her standard beach read, unless you want to be crying behind your sunnies and into your margarita, I do think it's a good book that features characters I felt for and enjoyed getting to know.

Couldn’t wait to finish it!. I had just read The Blue Bistro and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was hoping for the same with The Matchmaker. I was so disappointed. The book is slow and much too wordy. I have been to Nantucket and appreciate the descriptions of the island and the lifestyle, but the actual story is just dull. I’ll attempt another of Ms Hilenbrand’s books and hope it holds my interest as much as the Bistro.

Great beach read. Fred rubbed my arm so sweetly as I neared the finish line of The Matchmaker. Interesting characters, a bit of mystic magic, and love's perspectives from unexpected angles. Erin is a new author for me, and I'll enjoy more of her talent. She CAN tell a story. Enjoy it before you breathe your next.
