Creativity, Inc. (The Expanded Edition) by Ed Catmull & Amy Wallace Book Summary

The co-founder and longtime president of Pixar updates and expands his 2014 New York Times bestseller on creative leadership, reflecting on the management principles that built Pixar’s singularly successful culture, and on all he learned during the past nine years that allowed Pixar to retain its creative culture while continuing to evolve.

“Might be the most thoughtful management book ever.”—Fast Company

For nearly thirty years, Pixar has dominated the world of animation, producing such beloved films as the Toy Story trilogy, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up, and WALL-E, which have gone on to set box-office records and garner eighteen Academy Awards. The joyous storytelling, the inventive plots, the emotional authenticity: In some ways, Pixar movies are an object lesson in what creativity really is. Here, Catmull reveals the ideals and techniques that have made Pixar so widely admired—and so profitable.

As a young man, Ed Catmull had a dream: to make the first computer-animated movie. He nurtured that dream as a Ph.D. student, and then forged a partnership with George Lucas that led, indirectly, to his founding Pixar with Steve Jobs and John Lasseter in 1986. Nine years later, Toy Story was released, changing animation forever. The essential ingredient in that movie’s success—and in the twenty-five movies that followed—was the unique environment that Catmull and his colleagues built at Pixar, based on philosophies that protect the creative process and defy convention, such as:
• Give a good idea to a mediocre team and they will screw it up. But give a mediocre idea to a great team and they will either fix it or come up with something better.
• It’s not the manager’s job to prevent risks. It’s the manager’s job to make it safe for others to take them.
• The cost of preventing errors is often far greater than the cost of fixing them.
• A company’s communication structure should not mirror its organizational structure. Everybody should be able to talk to anybody.

Creativity, Inc. has been significantly expanded to illuminate the continuing development of the unique culture at Pixar. It features a new introduction, two entirely new chapters, four new chapter postscripts, and changes and updates throughout. Pursuing excellence isn’t a one-off assignment but an ongoing, day-in, day-out, full-time job. And Creativity, Inc. explores how it is done.

Excellent & Insightful. Fantastic, must-read for basically everyone. Valuable and extremely insightful, one of my favorites for sure.

Under the hood and between the ears look at Innovation. "Innovation" may be one of the most popularly used words a company will use to describe their core values, yet so many companies fail to foster an environment that truly breeds innovation. Creativity Inc. provides straight forward and insightful thoughts on promoting an innovative environment, and pairs these thoughts with an excellent sampling of real world applications.

Very good book and inspiring. Very good book and inspiring

Outstanding! Creative Management Guide. This book is rich in story, lessons, and truth. I recommend it to anyone leading creative teams.

An excellent book about creativity and much more!. I found this book very well written, and I was fascinated and inspired throughout the book. Ed was talking about how he and his partners carefully found ways to nurture creativity, and how to continually adapt and change to ensure Pixar stays in a delicate balance of allowing artistic freedom, producing high quality noble entertainment and financial viability. There were so many interesting stories about the making of every Pixar movie and those that did not make it, that was a great bonus for me in reading this book. I also loved the background and stories of all the people involved with Pixar, especially those of Steve Jobs. I shed a tear in the chapter that talked about Pixar people paying tribute to Jobs after his death.

Great read. So many lessons on how to extract brilliance and creativity from the people around you.

Wow. Just finished it and...wow. Amazing book on how to be creative, managing creatives, and leading an organization. Now I just need to read it again.

Creativity Inc is a must read for any and every leader. Creativity Inc. is one of the most inspirational, insightful, and honest books I've read in awhile. Two thumbs up! If you're an experienced manager, aspiring leader, or someone who simply enjoys learning about behind the scenes of such an interesting and unique company, then this book is a must read.

Couldn't Put It Down. I picked it up and couldn't put it down. I love movies and raised my son on many of the Pixar movies. I love to learn about how creative and brilliant people work. As a school principal and "manager," who aims to create a culture of innovation, the narratives and philosophy of this book taught me much and affirmed even more. My main takeaways revolve around candor, every voice matters, and the process of creating the new. Thank you Ed and the Pixar family for enlightening us all.

Five stars. Required reading, worth your time.

Best business book I've ever read. Inspiring, moving and full of a sense of possibility and wonder. In short, just like a Pixar movie.

Great Read on Pixar History. This book was great for people who want to learn more about pixar. It also has many managerial lessons. This was the primary reason i read the book.

Excellent One :). Loved to read & know many aspects :)

Life changing. This book is a life changing- it completed changed my view of managing and of being creative. It's a once in a lifetime book.

Invaluable. As a manager at an exploding new media company, the thoughts and ideas expressed in this book resonate greatly with me and forms the foundation upon which all of us can continue to build and evolve.

Excellent Leadership. Creativitiy Inc is one of those books that not only inspires leaders and future leaders alike, it inspires employees and followers as well. Everyone has a voice and an environment that allows those voices to be heard in a meaningful and respectful way enables a culture to thrive and be excellent. Also the concepts on making mistakes in invaluable. This book is neccessary!

Insightful yet practical. A must read for anyone who leads teams in any capacity.

Visionary simplicity. Catmull reveals that, like their movies, the secret of Pixar’s creative culture is brilliantly simple and grounded in the principles of being a good human being. It’s easy to understand, even while implementing requires constant vigilance and hard work. Healthy management is not a set-it-and-forget-it solution, but a constant process of communication and introspection.

Would Neva put this book down. As a creator, this is a book that you can always check back to for direction

Incredible!. This was one of the most enjoyable, insightful, thought provoking books I've ever read. An excellent story about awesome people that will change your life. John

The only book on management I genunely enjoyed reading. Long time ago, Plato thought about the best social arrangement. He came to the conclusion that a city state goverened by a philospher-king would be an ideal arrangement -"philosophers [must] become kings…or those now called kings [must]…genuinely and adequately philosophize" (The Republic, 5.473d).” While reading this book, I could not help but see the parallel in a sense that Ed Catmull in his writings comes across to me as a “philosopher-manager”, and what I mean by “philospher” part is not someone who is disconnected from reality but rather somone who tries to think deeply and widely about problems and the nature of his work.

Should be required reading for MBAs. A nearly continuous stream of insightful lessons on how to run a successful company.

Must Read By All Managers & Filmakers. Insightful, inspirational, interesting! Loved every page. The last chapter about Mr. Jobs was very enlightening. I recommend this book very highly to anyone even slightly interested. Bravo!

Tedious, mostly. Some interesting ideas and insights but poorly written book that belabors tedious business advice.

Outstanding!! Well done Ed!!. At first Ed really nails the beginning but midway through....starts to ramble. The last hundred pages are an absolute joy to read. Ed finds his voice. He accomplishes his mission of how to promote and sustain creativity. (A near impossible task.) Lastly, one of the most endearing Easter Eggs in the book his unwavering love and respect towards Steve Jobs. It will make you cry. (Really) Well done Ed! I learned so much and for that I am grateful! Hope to meet you and John in the very near future. (Work with Oscar winner George Murphy.) mark morrow

I wish every business owner would read this.. This is my third copy. Bought a hardback, then bought another as a gift. Just bought this for my iPhone and iPad because it's a reference book as much as it is a biographical page turner. It's just awesome. Catmull is honest and humble while bragging about some of the biggest pop successes ever. Highly recommend.

A must read!. So much information about effective companies and groups.

A Must Read. If you push forward to achieve the most effective solutions in a creative environment, you need to read this. Once. Twice. Three times.

Balance Enterprise Experience. It emphasis on the life balance that drive success to an enterprise. Like this so much.

Best book on creative business I've read. Would love a chance to be in an environment where even some of these ideas were implemented.

Excellent. Excellent book - wonderful insights. This is a must read for anyone involved in the creative process - or anyone leading a company or team. Honest, candid, heartfelt perspectives and advice. Ed's humility is apparent and the foundation for his amazing success. Thank you for sharing your experiences - you will make everyone who reads this better.

Fantastic. Loved this book.
