Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky Book Summary

Crime and Punishment is a novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It was first published in the literary journal The Russian Messenger in twelve monthly installments during 1866. It was later published in a single volume. It is the second of Dostoyevsky's full-length novels following his return from ten years of exile in Siberia. Crime and Punishment is the first great novel of his "mature" period of writing.
Crime and Punishment focuses on the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in St. Petersburg who formulates and executes a plan to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker for her cash. Raskolnikov argues that with the pawnbroker's money he can perform good deeds to counterbalance the crime, while ridding the world of a worthless vermin. He also commits this murder to test his own hypothesis that some people are naturally capable of such things, and even have the right to do them. Several times throughout the novel, Raskolnikov justifies his actions by connecting himself mentally with Napoleon Bonaparte, believing that murder is permissible in pursuit of a higher purpose.

K. Dove to the yes key wrote a master piece. Berry cool

Best book Iā€™ve read. A comfortably complex plot, philosophical issues still relevant almost 200 years later, and a writing style that makes you feel the psychological anguish of every character. Good stuff.

Errors in translation. this version has some format errors that impede the story, which itself is 5 stars

Categorical Morality. The book is diverse in its content. But the question on categorical morality that Dostoyevsky approached was embedded in deep psychological as well social structure of humans. Overstepping ones boundaries to see how far one can go often leads to disparity and agony. One should know what is wrong and no matter what the utility of ones act is it isnā€™t worth ruining oneā€™s conscience for.

Incredible. One of the greatest books Iā€™ve ever read

Beautiful. Everything is exquisitely composed, beautifully laid out. Words cannot describe this masterpiece.

Classic indeed. Quite a story. The punishment portion of the book wasnā€™t as tormenting as I expected. I was surprised at how many characters there were (nearly 30) and he focused on most of them, considering their thoughts and motivations. I was challenged by the Russian names. They were awkward and spelled similarly. Between the similar spelling, the number of characters, and that many of them had nicknames; it took awhile to fully grasp the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It is quite an accomplishment and itā€™s reputation as a classic is well deserved.

Best ever. My favorite book

Russian Literature. I read this book. 5 stars

Crimes not punished: Currently!. Raskolnikov is the model for todayā€™s men and women in America. We hope that people will be thoughtful of othersā€™ rights. But, sad to say, America has gone to pot. Recently, hackers hatched a ā€œget rich quick schemeā€. They stole 2 cars, jewelry, musical instruments, my job (delayed the EEOC), cut off my electricity and return to vandalize and destroy more every time I leave my property. Call me if the same happens to you. 5 stars. It is a great read!

Thoroughly Engrossing. Reading this monster was an undertaking at first but it quickly sucked me in, and I found it difficult to put down; however, a word to the wise this free version is the Constance Garrett translation, which a quick google search will tell you might not be the most true to the authorā€™s intentions. That being said I voraciously read the entire novel prior to realizing the edition and still had a great time. Itā€™s free, so, you know, whatever.

Great Start..... Great start to this book, however itā€™s for naught when it falls apart on the third act with its predictable religious propaganda of an era without science or technology or practical thinking. It is still worth the read, despite the fact that half of the entirety of the book is basically the author repeatedly stating the full names (FULL NAMES) of every character about a thousand times each, which is needless to say so absolutely unnecessary. Times were certainly different.

Fascinating. A very interesting study of human nature and how guilt affects oneā€™s personality even if one gets away with a crime. Also, the mental process of justifying oneā€™s right to commit a crime and the ensuing mental anguish. Even though love and honesty are shown to triumph over evil, the book is still rather sad and dark.

Extremely descriptive, beautiful book.. A wonderful, wonderful book. Very descriptive, and it is the hardest thing to put down. And when you do put it down, the guilt, the emotion, the mentality of Raskilnikov temporarily leaks into oneā€™s mind, and you yourself feel somewhat desperate. You feel as though you murdered the old lady and Lizaveta yourself. Very good book.

Crime and punishment is a great book. But this translation is written very poorly and some things in it just donā€™t make much sense.

Crime and Punishment. Oh what a masterpiece. This book was so well written, and evoked so many emotions in me that it is beyond words. The descriptions used to describe the terrible feelings coursing through Raskolnikov after he committed a double murder, the harshness of Russian life, in general, and the perception other characters had of the protagonist are unequivocally some of the best I have ever read. This novel is epic, and should be on everyone's reading list!

One of the best!. Kept me going, finished this book in 3 days. Great work by Fyodor.
