The Ship of Brides by Jojo Moyes Book Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Giver of Stars and the forthcoming Someone Else's Shoes, a post-WWII story of the war brides who crossed the seas by the thousands to face their unknown futures

1946. World War II has ended and all over the world, young women are beginning to fulfill the promises made to the men they wed in wartime.

In Sydney, Australia, four women join 650 other war brides on an extraordinary voyage to England—aboard HMS Victoria, which still carries not just arms and aircraft but a thousand naval officers. Rules are strictly enforced, from the aircraft carrier’s captain down to the lowliest young deckhand. But the men and the brides will find their lives intertwined despite the Navy’s ironclad sanctions. And for Frances Mackenzie, the complicated young woman whose past comes back to haunt her far from home, the journey will change her life in ways she never could have predicted—forever.

Solid read - learned something new!. Had no idea ships of brides actually existed. Enjoyed the historical aspect of the book without feeling bored (sadly I can’t get with historical nonfiction). Wish the little dog made it

Slow read…. I love her other books, but this one was dull and predictable. The characters were never brought into clear focus and the story dragged on and on until the last 1/4 of the book. From that point on, it was so predictable and then the characters were trying to be brought to life in a way that should have happened earlier.

Slow to start but I fell in love!. I had trouble getting into this one - lots of characters to remember and just slow to start overall - but about 100 pages in I couldn't put it down! Loved the characters and learning about that period in history! Truly enjoyed it and glad I pushed through until it got really good.

Unexpected historic novel. Lovely!. Couldn't stop reading it for one second. Such an interesting and unexpected setting and story that kept my eyes glued to the book. Loved the characters. To this day I can't stop thinking about Frances and all the brides' journey to the unknown. Fabulous! Must read. After 'Me before you' this is my favorite from Jojo Moyes.

I looked forward to reading it each night…. This is the kind of book I’m always searching for. Where I learn about a part of history I didn’t know and thoroughly enjoy the story written around it. JoJo Moyes did a great job of telling the story in a wholesome way without sounding trite. There had to be a tremendous amount of research of all things Naval, too. Well done! I didn’t want it to end because now the search is on again.

Ship of Brides is a winner. This was the third book I have read by this author and it was very different from the other two (Me Before You and One Plus One). Still, I enjoyed this unconventional love story very much and admire JoJo Moyes' style of writing. The author's attention to detail and character development brought the story to life.

The ship of brides. Couldn’t put it down!

The Ship of Brides. Not my favorite Jojo novel; slow and rather anticlimactic.

Wonderful Book!. This was the first Jojo Moyes book I read, and I absolutely loved it! It was a topic I never really thought about - war brides - but I was drawn in to the story. I also appreciated one of the morals - not to be judgmental. I don't recommend a lot of books, but this is one I did.
