Everything That Remains by Joshua Fields Millburn Book Summary

What if everything you ever wanted isn’t what you actually want?

Twenty-something, suit-clad, and upwardly mobile, Joshua Fields Millburn thought he had everything anyone could ever want. Until he didn’t anymore.

Blindsided by the loss of his mother and his marriage in the same month, Millburn started questioning every aspect of the life he had built for himself. Then, he accidentally discovered a lifestyle known as minimalism…and everything started to change.

That was four years ago. Since, Millburn, now 32, has embraced simplicity. In the pursuit of looking for something more substantial than compulsory consumption and the broken American Dream, he jettisoned most of his material possessions, paid off loads of crippling debt, and walked away from his six-figure career.

So, when everything was gone, what was left?

Not a how-to book but a why-to book, Everything That Remains is the touching, surprising story of what happened when one young man decided to let go of everything and begin living more deliberately. Heartrending, uplifting, and deeply personal, this engrossing memoir is peppered with insightful (and often hilarious) interruptions by Ryan Nicodemus, Millburn’s best friend of twenty years.

Thank you. I am so thankful for the courage Joshua displays in the chapters of this book. I work for a huge corporate company but am still low on the totem pole at a store level where we are told "you can work hard and climb wherever you want". I thank Joshua for introducing to me minimalism and the idea that perhaps an endless trek for materials and money is a dead end road. It's really a cliche that many people say, but it's different hearing it from someone who had it and left it by choice. Thank you, Josh & Ryan.

Incredible. Everything it promises to be and more. Thank you for your sharing your work with us. It is completely inspiring and proves, in my opinion, how much time and dedication is required to fully grasp such a simple concept.

What’s Better Than Trying to Have It All? This.. It’s striking and immediate: Joshua Fields Millburn knows how to create vivid imagery and engaging stories with ease. At the same time, the author and his partner in their stories – Ryan Nicodemus – can quickly shift from “Hey, wassup with that?” kinda language to a dialect that requires serious mental horsepower (and an expansive vocabulary) to keep up. I’m far along on my minimalism journey, so I kept pace with the concepts and context in the book. But Everything That Remains is an intermediate to advanced level book in my opinion. I’d recommend it to anyone, but I think it will be especially powerful for people who have already aligned their values with Joshua and Ryan’s. One thing’s for sure: Joshua and Ryan stand against much of what mainstream culture and economics preaches as the “right way.” But they stand for so much more, the kind of universal feelings that all humans want: contentment, abundance, gratitude, and slowing the heck down. It’s easy to understand the liberation these two felt when they freed themselves from consumerism, "stuff," toxic relationships, and more. It’s something almost everyone wants … but often don’t have the chutzpah required to make happen.

Minimalism worth the effort. Finally got around to reading one of there books after listening to the podcast for so long. Overall very enjoyable quick read. The narrative makes it easier to grasp the concepts as applied to real life situations.

At the right time. I've had this book since it was published and stumbled along the way with reading it. After seeing their documentary, I checked online to see which book I should start with first (since I have them all). I noticed on their Twitter account, a woman asked them where to start with their books and they stated to start here. I did and it was worth it. I can relate with Joshua about losing a parent and making you question things (my dad passed in 2012) and I can understand where Ryan was with his career. This was right on time and I intend to live a meaningful and intentional life now going forward. Thank you guys! This was LIFE changing!

Powerful read. Don't let the term memoir fool you (I normally find memoirs boring). This is a powerful read. How lucky these authors are to have discovered the true meaning of life at such a young age. Read on and share!

Guidance for all. Thoughtful and expressive. Any person who wishes to reevaluate their life and pursue alternate lifestyles should read this book. Minimalism comes alive!

Fantastic. Really enjoyed this book! Made me think differently about several things including goals and what's really important. Highly recommend.

Great book. Easy to read and very inspiring!

Truly Enjoyable. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The author has a unique writing style that is both interesting and accessible. Having started my journey into minimalism, it was a great reaffirmation of the decisions that I have made thus far. I loved the footnotes. They cracked me up! Great read! Highly recommend!

Worthwhile read. Excellent series. Read all 3!

Everything That Remains. Awesome read. Just an amazing book that I know will change my life.

Catalyst for Change and Much More. Written by a young-old wise man, zen like, deep yet light, thought provoking, answer searching and finding, catalyst for very necessary change in our daily living, simply a must read for better and more meaningful life. Loved it.

Highly recommend!. Very few books keep me engaged like this one. I almost didn't want to come to end as I was reading the last pages. But like Ryan mentions at the end, the end is just the beginning. I love that it has allowed to focus on the things that matter, which aren't really things at all.

Do I really need this?. Good book. Helps one see the alarming misguided beliefs that I/we have been exposed to and accepted by lack of paying attention on my part. Good book.

The Minimalists. These guys are the best!

A reminder of what’s really important. Love these guys, love this message. Everyone needs to hear this.

Excellent work. These guys really know what is important in life. I've learned a lot about minimalism recently and look forward to putting various practices into play. Simpler, calmer, a more deliberate life. Get off the hedonic treadmill and realize that it takes effort to get over trivial wants. But when you do, that is when the magic happens. Life changing advice here, really folks. Produce instead of consume. Thanks guys once again for bringing the value

Great read. This book was so easy to listen to. It was very inspiring.

Memoir with insight. The insight and "nuggets" that you can take away and apply to yourself are well placed within an interesting memoir.

Mahalo!!. Finished reading Minimalism, Live a Meaningful Life and Everything that Remains. A real eye opener with factual information that can help anyone with an open mind. Next up, Essentials. Love you guys! T.S. Honolulu, Hawaii

Excellent Read. This memoir is the first of its kind that I’ve read and it’s interesting to be able to see the world through another’s real eyes and life. The writing style is also great and has inspired me to write more in my ‘spare’ time.

Excellent !. Really enjoyed this book , it has a feel good factor that makes you want to make some positive changes to your own life , thank you :-)

Everything That Remains: A Memoir by The Minimalists. A raw peice of magic. I can hear Joshuas voice so clearly and I can relate to many qualities he beholds that I too question and have learnt to deal with. Every word just made sense and I have found a lot of clarity in reading this. I know that minimalism is a lifstyle I want to transition to, I am so excited for this journey as I know and I can feel that this is the right direction. Thank you for this Gift Josh and Ryan! Hannah.

Perspectively Brilliant. I actually read this just before moving into a new house. And it’s really opened my eyes to see the real way of living. We all search for happiness and this book makes you feel closer to finding it. Although I find that josh probably found it much easier as he was earning a big wage to start with so when he started making his changes. He obviously wasn’t spending as much. Running a household is way more expensive now. With all your different insurances and taxes and utilities on top of your mortgage. That the only reason we can afford what we have is because my partner has his stressful job and works practically 12 hour days 5 days a week and some weekends if he can. (Especially at the minute we bought a much cheaper property so we have a shell we have to completely renovate to make it liveable) A lot of people are tied down to work because of this reason and others(like having to pay back to expensive courses back if you leave within 12 months after the course) but saying that. It’s made me look at life differently and this book is utterly brilliant.

Life-changing. This book has changed my outlook on life completely. It is beautifully written and makes a fantastic read. A simple life is one I think we all crave and this book tells one story and encourages the reader to find their own path. Minimalism is a life choice and it's a conscious decision to live deliberately and with meaning.

A good insight into a changed brain. I personally can take a lot from this, not on the level of being from the same worlds but as someone who can see his point of view regarding everyone. Overall this book is more or less an extended version of his previous work "minimalism", albeit with a little more in depth insight into his life. Both books have inspired me to change my life, I hope he keeps up the good work as I think they're onto something big with the way they put the message across, slow down, live a little & have a look around

Well written, full of truths that resonate.. I'm looking forward to a life less cluttered with things, more full of people. Thanks guys for sharing. C

Everything and more. Loved this book!! Interesting and funny, very well written and so many messages to take home. Can’t wait to read another of their books!

Embrace the calm. I have watched the documentary, listened to numerous podcasts and now read the book. This journey for the last five weeks has changed me. The Minimalists message has changed me. It feels like magic, but it's not. Read this book, watch the documentary...you won't be disappointed. It's time to unplug, and plug in again. I promise you, you won't regret it.

Great read and inspiring too!. I really enjoyed and highly recommend this! It was the right book at the right time. It has motivated me to make the changes I need to make and to see our North American culture differently. I recommend watching The Minimalists Movie too. I saw that first. Josh's ability to write is such that he just carries you along and you experience everything with like you were there. And I thoroughly enjoyed Ryan's footnotes that added humour and a second side to things.
