Personal by Lee Child Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Jack Reacher returns in another fast-moving, action-packed, suspenseful book from Lee Child.

You can leave the army, but the army doesn’t leave you. Not always. Not completely, notes Jack Reacher—and sure enough, the retired military cop is soon pulled back into service. This time, for the State Department and the CIA.

Someone has taken a shot at the president of France in the City of Light. The bullet was American. The distance between the gunman and the target was exceptional. How many snipers can shoot from three-quarters of a mile with total confidence? Very few, but John Kott—an American marksman gone bad—is one of them. And after fifteen years in prison, he’s out, unaccounted for, and likely drawing a bead on a G8 summit packed with enough world leaders to tempt any assassin.

If anyone can stop Kott, it’s the man who beat him before: Reacher. And though he’d rather work alone, Reacher is teamed with Casey Nice, a rookie analyst who keeps her cool with Zoloft. But they’re facing a rough road, full of ruthless mobsters, Serbian thugs, close calls, double-crosses—and no backup if they’re caught. All the while Reacher can’t stop thinking about the woman he once failed to save. But he won’t let that that happen again. Not this time. Not Nice.

Reacher never gets too close. But now a killer is making it personal.

Praise for Personal

“The best one yet.”—Stephen King

“Reacher is the stuff of myth, a great male fantasy. . . . One of this century’s most original, tantalizing pop-fiction heroes . . . Child does a masterly job of bringing his adventure to life with endless surprises and fierce suspense.”—The Washington Post

“Yet another satisfying page-turner.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Reacher is always up for a good fight, most entertainingly when he goes mano a mano with a seven-foot, 300-pound monster of a mobster named Little Joey. But it’s Reacher the Teacher who wows here.”—Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times

A little off. I have read all the reacher books and this one seemed too professional.

Great read. Every book he writes is good!!!

Surprise Surprise. As a longtime fan of Reacher and Child I've read them all - some more than once. I hate to say it, but this one was clearly the worst and rather disappointing. The surprise ending was a direly needed twist though far from saving the glacially slow caper. Half the time I couldn't tell who were the bad guys and who were the good ones. The conclusion was anticlimactic and far too long in coming. What happened to Jack? He's not the same Reacher his fans have come to love. Zero potential for romance and less than occasional chances for his character defining bouts of physical or tactical opportunities- a real downer. MDMcDMD, Orlando, FL.

Classic Reacher. As always, a good read. Lee Child does this sort of thing like no one else.

Great Book. Another great Reacher ending!!!

Not a Drill, the short story not included. Where is the short story? Bizarrely, it is part of the title but not in TOC, just a tease for newest book published half a decade after this one.

Personal. Might be the only Reacher book I have ever found boring. I hope the next one is better.

Boring. I have liked every Reacher book except this one. This is the only one I could not finish. Practically no story line. Hope the next one is back to all of our expectations!

Jack Reacher Series Are Incredible. Love the Jack Reacher series. Very addicting.

Personal. Fast easy reading that keep you on your toes guessing

ATCO 1. Really enjoyable read but not quite as music a page turned as his other Reach thrillers. This is really frustrating-I have made my review and am ready to move on but my review is not long enough.

All jack reacher books.. I cannot wait till new jack comes out. But if you put Tom Cruise short whimpy Tom Cruise in another jack reacher movie I will burn all my copies and never read ur books again. Picture this all the people who read and love JACK 6/5 big hands broad shoulders good looking. Now picture this. 5/5 maybe less small hand whimpy voice small feet. Oh god makes me sick thinking about it. I’ve seen what others have written about Tom ugh playing Jack and their words were the same as mine. What joker would cast the least person that could play a part. Was it alcohol day then or what. Please please there are several guys who could play jack. Get them I didn’t even watch the last jack movie I would have sat there throwing up and being mad. Donna Swanstrom

Simply a great read.. Finely woven plot. Well crafted characters. Flawless dialogue. Another home run for Lee Child.

Personal. I have read all of the Jack Reacher series and this one was one of the best. Thanks Lee!

Boring. Not the Jack Reacher I know. Disappointing.

Yes!. Perfect balance at mystery and suspense, Childs knocks this one out of the park. His Best yet. Prepare to stay up for a few nights reading 'Personal'.

Alright I guess. Jack reacher novels are some of my favorite out there. I have read them all!! I was so looking forward to reading this and find I'm disappointed the only times I read fast wast just to finish the book nothing like my favorite .persuader

Not Mr. Childs best effort. Kind of slow. It got better at the very long to get to climax.

Tedious. Too slow moving. Plot is thin although a good surprise ending.

Drawn out. I normally like all of the Jack Reacher books. This one had no substance. The story line was flat and drawn out. I couldn’t wait to finish this book and move on.

Personal. I am still trying to get through this very boring book. It is by far the worst of Jack Reacher. No action all just boring stuff that I read to put me to sleep. Only gave it three stars hoping the next will be better. I'm always waiting for the next one but sorry I bought this one. Hope you haven't killed Jack with this one Mr. Child

Personal. Enjoyed this book very much..

Personal. This reads like overly long car chase, with a trick ending which makes the reader feel foolish for reading the book.

Personal. Very long drawn out , boring book. Not his best.

Great read!. I am a huge Lee Child fan, having read all of his books. I keep waiting for him to slip and "phone" one in. But it never happens. Each book he writes is better than the others. Don't skim pages in this book or you will miss all of the subliminal pieces of the puzzle. Three seconds is a long time!

Awesome. As usual Jack Reacher is at his best. Always thinking, always calculating and always planning ! Never count him out !

Lee child PERSONAL. Not that interesting. A kind of long and a bite boring especially in the middle

Personal. Another great Jack Reacher story…simple& straightforward…until it doubles back on itself with crafty twists & turns

Very good. Love these books

Jack Reacher is back. I am so relieved that this book is 100 times better than the last one. Whhhew. Quick, witty, and smart - Reacher has come back for sure, and it is a pleasure reading Personal.

Personal. I love the Jack Reacher series and hope many of them will be made into movies. I know the purists don't particularly like Tom Cruise playing Reacher but I think he displays the right amount of swagger. All that being said, I think this book was "mailed in" by Lee Child or ghost written. The style doesn't match any of the previous novels.

Surprisingly blah. If I were to list all the things I expect when reading a Reacher book, having my mind wander and finding myself a little bit bored would not normally be included. This book, however, just didn't grab me like virtually every other book in the series. The plot was interesting, if typically ludicrous, but I just had a hard time paying attention or even caring in parts. I hope this isn't the start of a trend, but this one just wasn't my favorite.

Personal. I have read most of the Reacher books and this was not up to the caliber of most of the others.

Personal. Too long, too wordy, improbable concept, skip Child's next offering.

Best one in a long time.. This is much better. Reacher is in the First Person. Good story. Good characters. It does wrap up quick in the end. Hopefully the next one continues like this one does. I liked it.

Farewell To Arms. Just wonderful

Horrible. Who wrote this? Not Lee Child, that's for sure.

Done with lee child. Read all his books and always thought they were guilty mindless reads, but the last few have been really boring. Definitely will not be reading any more after this one.

Great settings, great story. This is one of Lee Child's best Reacher stories. Layers of intrigue throughout. Enjoyed the action thoroughly.

Missing pages. My copy had 20+ pages without content. Such a big error. HUGE loss. Editors: get your act together.

Boring. Overly detailed to no point!

Slow, Slow, Slow. I've devoured every Lee Child - Jack Reacher book, and this is by far, my least favorite. Way too slow, way too many filler pages. The only things missing were the overtly descriptive, flowery adjectives that most writers use to fill the pages, just to get the book length to a minimum. Still love the Jack Reacher books though, and hope the next one written will be similar to those written prior to this one. One more thing . . please don't sign Tom Cruise to play the part of "Little Joey" in the movie :-)

Personal. Good story line

disappointing. Not one of Reacher’s better adventures. The story has less action and more descriptive and peripheral writing than most of the others. The plot is straightforward and funnels the story to a simplistic and anticlimactic ending. Good enough to feed the avid Reacher fan’s habit, but this novel, compared with other Reacher novels, seems both tired and hurried with many of the scenarios coming across as forced or even unnecessary.

Bam.... Good read.

Excellent!. Kept me interested to the end. I loved the way the story developed and kept it going. I enjoyed every minute and couldn't wait for the story to develop entirely. Ooh ooh ooh, juicy!!!

Good Read. Reacher is always thinking. It is a good book.

Farewell to Reacher. I’ve read every Reacher novel and always looked forward to the next one. Unfortunately, this one was disappointing. The previous was already a little bit off the norm, but Personal told me I need to take a break from this author. Either the real Reacher returns soon , or this will be the last I read.

Personal. This was the one so far

Personal. Another great "Reacher" story ....

Personal. This isn't the Reacher we know and love. He's too talkative so that about half the 500 pages are dialogue, most of it his. The plotting is too facile and not up to the standards we've come to expect from the author. I miss the tough and rumble that endeared Reacher to me from the start. As well, I sense an attempt to cash in on the "success" of The Jack Reacher Movie. Why not give Liam Neeson a shot at the next attempt to bring Reacher to the screen? All that said, I look forward to my next encounter with Jack.

Personal. As always a great read. I have read all of the Reacher books and love every one of them. Jack is my hero. The Reacher books don't come out in print or ebooks fast enough for me. Hurry up Mr. Child I'm in withdrawal mode.

Personal. The absolute worst Jack Reacher book. It's like Lee took a street map of Paris and London and created a book about cars driving on them. Not worth reading...

Personal. Loved the story but it does NOT include a short story. Bogus advertising

Reacher in Europe. Personal moves very fast. It's classic Reacher. There is also a nice travel angle with Paris and London playing supporting roles. HBO or Netflix should make a series.

Personal. Very good plot and as usual entertaining. Love Jack Reacher.

Personal. Another great read by Lee Child. My only complaint is...I can't put it down, then I have to wait so long for the next one.

Personal. Boring. Too wordy. Over description of everything. Too many words to describe things such as a door. Weak story line. Was disappointed as I really looked forward to this Reacher book. Not up to standard. Too bad.

Read them all. Not real exciting and has a "ho hum" ending. The bad guys went down too easy and the story line is thin. Can't put my finger on what is missing now that was there before, but something is.

Reacher. Amazing!! I am a fan!!
