Twelve Years a Slave. A must read. This is a horrible true injustice brought on to an incredible human being that never gave up hope. I cried so many times realizing that this had happened to so many unfortunate innocent human beings based on the color of their skin! Can't wait to see the movie because we all need to acknowledge this grotesque brutality of human beings.

Impressive. Hard to put down.

A real life interrupted. This true tale and narrative takes the reader on a journey that starts with New Yorker Solomon Northup's happy life with his wife and children and plunges all into the hell that is slavery in the 1850's. Northup is enslavement is deftly told, both the horrors and the kindnesses that come his way. He is repeatedly challenged and yet holds up hope to ulitmately survive his ordeal in Louisiana. Solomon lived his slave life in the company of brutal men, but was fortunate to have had relationships with good men who came to his rescue. In this book his spirit lives on.

12 years a Slave. This beautifully written book tells the story of slavery in a very personal manner. Throughout the sad tale the author describes both very wicked and also fine people. He senses beauty in nature and the beings who surround him in spite of the misery of his days. It is with relief that one realizes that in a very short while, the despicable instition of slavery will be ended.

Book first, then the movie. A MUST read. The book is difficult to bear, the movie no easier. But I wish I read the book before I saw the movie. God bless Mr. Solomon Northup. May his soul rest comfortably, as he deserves, and may his story continuously reach the ears of generations to come...as he deserves.

Truly captivating. The horrors, that this man and others, endured, are so wrong as to make me wonder how any civilized person, let alone a nation, could believe them to be allowable. His tale has waited too long to be heard.

12 Years A Slave. I have always been interested in history. So if you love learning things before you where born 12 Years a Slave is the best choice for you. It was for me!

Excellent book.....many typos though.. What am amazing story. I was quite disappointed with the numerous typos in the book and the fact that it appears spell check only was used. There were numerous words that should not have been included if only a person had proofed the book. Other than that, the story held my attention and for that, I give the book five stars.

An incredible story.... If you haven’t seen the movie yet, read this book first! This is an incredible, first-hand account of the brutality of slavery, and it’s a shame that this book remained largely obscure before the movie came out. It’s not an easy or comfortable read, but it will make you think.

12 years a slave. Very thought provoking book. Amazing what the human spirit can live through.
