Saint Odd by Dean Koontz Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SUSPENSE MAGAZINE • Includes Dean Koontz’s short story “You Are Destined to Be Together Forever”

From “one of the master storytellers of this or any age” (The Tampa Tribune) comes the stunning final adventure of “one of the most remarkable and appealing characters in current fiction”(The Virginian-Pilot)—as Dean Koontz brings the unforgettable odyssey of Odd Thomas to its dazzling conclusion.

Odd Thomas is back where it all started . . . because the time has come to finish it. Since he left his simple life in the small town of Pico Mundo, California, his journey has taken him to places strange and wonderful, mysterious and terrifying. Across the land, in the company of mortals and spirits alike, he has known kindness and cruelty, felt love and loss, saved lives and taken them—as he’s borne witness to humanity’s greatest good and darkest evil. Again and again, he has gone where he must and done what he had to do—for better or worse—with his courage and devotion sorely tested, and his soul forever changed. Every triumph has been hard won. Each sacrifice has taken its toll.

Now, whatever destiny drives him has finally steered his steps home, where those he cares for most surround him, the memory of his tragically lost true love haunts him, and one last challenge—vast and dreadful—awaits him. For Odd Thomas, born to serve a purpose far greater than himself, the wandering is done. Only the reckoning remains.

Praise for Saint Odd

“Odd Thomas is such an endearing and likable character and, more than anything else, has been the reason for the success of the series. . . . For readers who have been with Odd all along, Saint Odd will satisfy.”—Bookreporter

The end,..or is it?. I have waited for this book for such a long time and I was not disappointed. I read it over a long weekend and I will cherish this weekend forever. Thank you Mr Koontz for telling us the story of Odd Thomas. We will be together forever....................

Saint Odd. Thoroughly disappointed. I have read the entire Odd Thomas series and cannot believe an end has been put to a character we have fallen in love with. The last book should of had more story... more substance ... better closure. Oddie killed my a random cultist's bullet?! Are you kidding me?! No resolution to the mysteries of Anamaria, Edie or the silver bell. No closure with all Odd's beloved friends. Odd had so much more story. Could have had so many more adventures. You could have found a way to bring Stormy back. You could have given Oddie a family. I have read every single Koontz book in publication and I have to say this is the worst decision made and a poor excuse for an ending. Shame on you for ending our beloved Oddie. Bring him back!!! I almost don't want to pick up another Koontz book.

I cried. Love Odd Thomas!

Odd's Ending . . . or the New Beginning. I've followed Odd Thomas since the beginning. I can't think of this as the end because he truly is Forever Odd. He has begun his second life . . . his "Life of Service". The fortune tellers's promise is finally fulfilled. They were "Destined to be together forever", and now they are. My heart is full, and the ending (or beginning) was perfect. Thank you, Mr. Koontz, for a beautiful conclusion to a wonderful story.

Saint Odd. Again, all that can be said is " Thank You"

So disappointed!. Wow! Waited for many years for the conclusion of a good series with a great character, only to end up with this silly ending! What I've admired most about Mr. Koontz is his determination to research a subject thoroughly. He even mentioned it in this novel. Instead of doing his research, Mr. Koontz falls back on his parochial upbringing, instead of searching out the Scriptures for himself to discover there isn't any such place as purgatory! I understand a goodly portion of these sort of religious folks have never read their bible, but in the instance of writing a feasible conclusion to a story, some of us would have liked him to go the extra mile and check the facts. This isn't the only complaint. Though some of the earlier Odd Thomas novels portrayed the character as maudlin, constantly berating himself for not saving Stormy, this was was over the top. I wanted Odd to pull himself up and act like the hero of the story, realizing life goes on. Sometimes, you need to just get a grip. Odd never seemed to have enough umph to get one. How sad this character has left this legacy. Doesn't give anyone much hope for ever being able to move on in life.

One of the best book series I've ever read. I started Odd Thomas a long time ago and he instantly became my favorite character in any written book, following his journey from beginning to end. It's very sad to read the ending to the book because I'm left wanting more. You will be missed Odd Thomas.

Perfection. This is such a great way to end the Odd Thomas series .... I have read all of these books, and they were all a good read.... I will miss them.

Saint Odd. As, the final in the series I can only rate it as equal to the first one. This one is not a tear jerker, however. It ends well--happily ever after.

Saint Odd. Unfortunately, I found Saint Odd to be the weaker book in the Odd Thomas series. The book is short and races to get to an ending that was very obvious. I think the story needed mor meat on its bones. It felt rushed and anticlimactic.

Dream sequences?? Really?. Disappointing end to Odd Thomas. Seems the Koontz team got lazy - especially using dream sequences. Is nothing more boring? And killing off Odd seems to have killed the golden goose! I guess if you have as much Ca$h as Koontz it's not a worry.

Saint Odd. A great end to a very fine group of books. Truly an incredible bit of writing. Mr. Koontz in his very eloquent fashion keeps you on the edge of your seat with his incredible vocabulary and a great dash of humor. Truly, a literary masterpiece. Five stars is actually not enough.

Heartbroken in love. You made me sob I'm still crying so good didn't even see it coming

Saint Thomas. The best of the series. Loved all. A little sad that this is the last. The ending is perfect.

A fitting end to a great series. At times the last book of a series disappoints. Not this one. It grabs your attention from the first few sentences, and never lets up. A fitting ending for a special fry cook!

Jungle.... Obviously I could not have read this book at this point. But, I have no doubt that it will be great. Dean Koontz is a rock star in the supernatural mystery/thriller realm. So I cannot in good conscience rate it at anything below 5 stars until I've read it cover to cover. Though I sure wish I could direct this to the right people. It's certainly not the fault of the author. I'm just noting here to all that look that I found this book at a major "sight" for one penny shy of seven and I am really feeling quite cheated at this point. Thanks "i" people. I think from now on, I'm going to stay in the "jungle/rainforest" with the really long river. Yup, that was a major hint! Growl!

Fitting Ending. I blazed through this last volume for two reasons: the story moved quickly across a short period of time, and it was shorter than many of the other Odd books (if not all). The latter is unfortunate, because I would have liked more detailed revelations about some of the mysterious repeat characters. That said, Koontz tied a nice bow around the series. He touches reality with Odd being concerned about (and situational discussion regarding) his prolific killings of wicked people. He touches fantasy without being overindulgent in the unseen and unexplainable. Suspend reality regarding the ending (whether agnostic or evangelistic, you will not agree with his vision of the afterlife) and enjoy the thrilling ride!

Reviewers gave away the ending.. If you are going to write a book review, ANY book review and give away the ending, do the courteous thing and preface it with "SPOILER ALERT!" Warning: don't read these reviews unless you want to know the ending! Thank you fellow reviewers for giving away the ending of the final book in a series.

Odd. Love the book love the series

There is a reason why Koontz if my favorite. Yet again another amazing Odd Thomas book! Thank you Mr. Koontz for your uncanny ability to write a story that becomes so much like reality that I feel like I know your characters personally.

Odd has his reward. Sad, I cried. I have come to love Odd Thomas as though he were my son. I can't help but think that he and Stormy just might be back to tell of his new adventures some day.

Odd. I've been a huge fan of Odd Thomas (and Dean Koontz) for many years. When I read the Odd Thomas novels I'm often reminded of my younger brother, Marc. He, like Odd was humble and modest yet his life impacted so many people. Marc was also a huge sci-fi fan and loved a good debate on heaven, earth, the hereafter, ghosts, demons, supernatural powers, ect...He was a believer and he maintained that child-like wonder most outgrow (unfortunately). I lost my brother to a chronic illness 2 months ago. I was at his side, holding his hand when he left this world. I have laid awake many a night wondering what he saw, heard and felt in his last moments. I know my brother has gone to a better place and reading Saint Odd touched my heart. Perfect timing, Mr Koontz:)

Awesome. Sad to see an end to the odd stories. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the book. Thank you Dean Koontz for not disappointing me.

Great Read. I hate that this is the last book of the series but i The ending is done very well!

Odd. Good, but expected a little more, but still worth reading.

Disturbing but promising. The depths of evil are disturbingly real. The promising spirit of Oddie and his humor and simplicity is the redeeming quality of this story and it becomes a tribute to the spirit of goodness. An excellent story!

Awesome👍👍👍. Great book & series!!

Saint Odd. Fantastic! A superb ending to the Odd Thomas series. I highly recommend reading all of them. Thank you Mr. Koontz!!

Goodbye Odd Thomas. Having dreaded the ending of this series, I waited over a month to read this final story. After finishing in a day, I am sad that I will never read Odd's story again. This was an exciting, mysterious ending to a great character. Goodbye Odd Thomas, I will miss you!

Love You Oddie. I’ve read all in the series and they are all good and some great. Always a pleasure to read anything by Dean Koontz. I will miss you Oddie but I find solace in knowing you are now fully smooth and blue.

Thanks for the Odd Trip. Thank you Mr koontz

Saint Odd. Loved this book, it does not disappoint. I've been a fan of Dean Koontz and of 'Odd Thomas' in particular, from the first book. Well done.

This is the worst book he has written. His books have been getting worse and worse and this is his worst on yet I'm done with him

Bon Voyage. So long Oddie. Gonna miss you. Tell you what; appear before your creator on a regular basis and mutely encourage him to do as Doyle did after his detective fell into the gorge, and resurrect you through some literary hocus-pocus. Too good a character you be to go quietly into that good night. Bob S

Saint Odd. From beginning to end challenged by the darkness portrayed and then hopeful with the honor displayed by Odd to the end!!!! Wish we could read more.

Heartbroken. I savored this book for as long as I could , only reading a few pages at a time or dare I a whole chapter in a day. I quite simply wanted it to last, but all good things must come to an end. I have read the whole Odd Thomas collection and therefore am bias when it comes to the books. I love Odd Thomas the character. It doesn't matter what he does or where he goes or who writes about it. I have given my daughter the first book , now she is hooked and I couldn't be happier. I would like to thank Dean Koontz for this fine upstanding character.

Perfect Conclusion. I have read and loved the entire series. This book is as captivating as the first and leaves you wanting more. It answers all of the questions you could possibly have and leaves a bitter sweet feeling in your heart. Thank you Dean Koontz for introducing us to a lovable fry cook with paranormal gifts. "In Odd we trust!"

Smooth and blue. The final Odd book was everything it should have been and more. By far the smoothest and bluest Odd novel of them all. Thanks Dean; I will miss our Oddie.

Saint Odd. A fabulous ending to a truly wonderful series!
