Gray Mountain by John Grisham Book Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham has a new hero ... and she’s full of surprises.

The year is 2008 and Samantha Kofer’s career at a huge Wall Street law firm is on the fast track—until the recession hits and she is downsized, furloughed, and escorted out of the building. Samantha, though, is offered an opportunity to work at a legal aid clinic for one year without pay, all for a slim chance of getting rehired.

In a matter of days Samantha moves from Manhattan to Brady, Virginia, population 2,200, in the heart of Appalachia, a part of the world she has only read about. Samantha’s new job takes her into the murky and dangerous world of coal mining, where laws are often broken, communities are divided, and the land itself is under attack. But some of the locals aren’t so thrilled to have a big-city lawyer in town, and within weeks Samantha is engulfed in litigation that turns deadly. Because like most small towns, Brady harbors big secrets that some will kill to conceal.

Another #1 Best Seller! Mesmerizing,. I don't always make the time to read that I should, but when I do, I always first look for another John Grisham book. I have read about half of all the novels he has written, and I look forward to reading the rest. Gray Mountain was yet another mesmerizing story! Grisham has a way of writing that keeps you intrigued, and interested to the point of not wanting to put the book down until its completion. While reading, it's always as though I can visualize what's happening, as though it were a movie I was watching. It's the type of writing that keeps me coming back for more! Gray Mountain is yet another of these types of stories. I highly recommend this book, but then I highly recommend all his books!

Not Grisham’s best work. The best thing about this book is shedding light on the plight of coal workers and the power of the coal companies. Other than that the book is slow, the story not that interesting and the main character seemed shallow, not well developed. Definitely not up to Grisham’s standard.

Gray mountain. The main character was just a filler, she never developed, the story just happened around her. The plot did the sss as me, the was promise if a story but it just fizzled out.

Gray Mountain. Ended too soon. So much on the table still but loved every minute of it.

Coal Dust. Typical Grisham, he winds you up and gets you involved right away with a great plot and then lets you down with a weak ending. Always leaves a lot of questions on the table. Fun read.

Good book. Good book

A page turner. Another awesome book. From the beginning to the end you will stay engaged in the ever changing direction of the book. He ties all the pieces together. I've enjoyed setting on the porch with my Dogs in my lap and hot cup of coffee in my hand as I turn the pages.

Involved but not riveting. I had this book as a leisure reading. Would just pick it up from time to time. Never felt lost. Never really felt intrigued either. Not really one of Grisham’s best.

Gray Mountain - Captivating/Awesome/Eye Opening. This is by far one of the best books I have read in a long time. I was engaged from the first page and had trouble putting it down. It was also very informative. I assume most of the coal facts to be true and ended up very angry with the coal companies.

Grisham must have gotten bored. What a huge disappointment. The book ended about 2/3 the way in. No closure to any of the characters' stories. Grisham either became bored or was tired of writing. The story was just getting good when it ended abruptly.

Where's the ending?. The entire book was excellent, but it leads up to what? The Authors Note? There's no ending! Very frustrating and unexpected. Now we wait for part 2 and pay for another book I guess.

This was not Mr. Grisham’s best. As I have read several of Mr. Grisham’s including his first originals…this one in my opinion was a disappointment…

Fact Check. In Chapter 31, it reads, “After one beer—Donovan was piloting—they walked back to the office and said good-bye.” A pilot, especially a private pilot flying professional colleagues, would not have had a beer. Law states 8 hours from bottle to throttle. Unless there was a need to use this sentence in the story for the plot, it should have been researched then cut from the text. It threw me off and I began wondering what other parts of the story were bogus.

Gray mountain. Wonderful book....would love to see more books with these characters .

So good!!!. Loved it

Feels Unfinished. The story starts slow and picks up half way through the book, but suddenly ends with many unresolved cases. Wish it would have been longer.

Grey's Mountain. The book was good until the ending. There was no ending.

Coal Bad! Big coal worse!!!!. Well developed, fast read page turner. Every time 20 lawyers piss me off, John writes a book and reminds me why we need them. Too bad the politicians in bed with big coal can't read. Grew up on the edge of Appalachia, became a doctor and have known every one of these people while practicing in WV, DC and NC. Hats off to the people in Boone NC who helped John with his research and their tireless efforts on behalf of us and our children.

Gray Mountain. Great book. Terrific characters. Cannot believe Grisham did not make her a character in future books. Gigantic mistake and missed opportunity. He had it all set up for lots of stories..future books. Especially since some of his books after this were not top quality.

Meandering. Love Grisham and wanted to like this, but disappointed with what seemed to be a meandering storyline that lead nowhere. Liked the characters (Samantha's continuing whining did get old after a while), the coal industry theme etc.,...just never really went anywhere. Worth a read if you like the above.

Empty. Characters felt empty the whole story felt empty. A couple or flashes here and there, but nothing of depth. Disappointed in this one. JG is my favor for author and no wow factor when I put it on.

Gray is a dull color. I haven't read a Grisham novel in a mile. Used to like them but they became very formulaic predictable. Decided to give one another shot. Gray Moutain is tedious, poorly written, rambling, reptetive, and a lot of not other great adjectives. Sincerely no where near on par with Grisham's early work.

Too much wokeness. Too much wokeness, which is any.

Meh. I’ve been a big fan of Grisham’s work for decades, but this one disappointed me. The characters seemed more like annoying stereotypes than real people, and the plot was relatively predictable.

Superb!. Couldn't put it down!

Gray Mountain. The best I read in a long time. I want more, I want to see another book to finish these cases left open and all its drama. My daughter was in the hospital for a serious condition. I couldn't relax and starting reading to help me sleep. I found I would stay up longer to finish a chapter. Lol only once during the night I fell asleep reading. Great book highly recommend it but, not while you need rest.

Not Grisham's Standard. Such a far cry from his best work. I kept turning pages hoping at least pride would propel some measure of excellence. In the end, Gray Mountain is as sad a little novel as the pitiful lives Grisham poorly brings to light.

Well, hell..... I was left feeling quite unfulfilled. I expected to find out if Krull went down, if the Tate appeal materialized, if Samantha and Jeff Ever defined their partnership other than physical... what happened?? Way too much left unanswered. I’m disappointed in the way it ended.

Gray Mountain. Excellent read and very interesting.

Really good. Could there be a sequel?

Another masterpiece. Certainly like John Grisham’s writing style and this story revealed a lot for me regarding Big Coal and the non-profit groups that are working tirelessly for “real” people. But having read Sycamore Row (that was unputdownable and the amazing plot twist at the end) just before this, it made me wanting something more. But this is different and I love the fact how I could visualize everything and be in the story every page of the way. Thank you John Grisham.

Worth the Read. Grisham's stories usually begin at a quicker pace, and I found myself putting it down after only a chapter or two at a time; however, as the story unfolded I became engrossed, as well as angry. A haunting testament to the rape of Appalachia, this book has awakened awareness of and interest in yet another type of insatiable greed found within powerful companies in this country. Though a capitalist at heart, I will never understand the lengths to which some go to eek out every possible penny. The need to take it all, especially at the tragic expense of fellow humans, mystifies and saddens me deeply.

Second Zeus😗😺💩🤓😞😗. Ze is cxxxwvgtdseyctxe gd zszwrxeexxfzd

Grisham’s Best. I’ve read a number of his books and this is the best. It’s exciting and I now know more about strip mining than I ever thought possible.

Well I read it. The best way I can describe this book is like a chocolate chip cookie with only a single chocolate chip. It has one maybe two little spurts of maybe five pages where I got into it, but other than that it was a book filled with just bland conversation, minimal descriptions and well not much frankly. I finished it though, and at the end I felt like I had nothing interesting to share about it.

Love it. Great Read 🥳🥳🥳🥳

Tough Read. Love this author . Not his best effort .Politics of coal industry and it's effect on the environment have been written about for decades. The story and conclusion very obvious . The book is a grind.

Gray mountain. I have all the john Grisham books did not find this one as good as his other books or should I say his eariler books the client. Jurior. Etc. things went downhill in his writing after he wrote skipping Christmas Thank you for listening Anita Ellison

Grey mountain. Loved it.

Excellent, kept me interested all the way through. Good read

What a letdown. The first half was written by Grisham and was a page turner. Abruptly a second writer took over the writing and screwed it up. What a piece of beetle dung.

Hi. Oo i

Hope…... Plain Jane, flat laid out, unembellished raw honesty, looking not for a way out, but for a breath of life after cessation thereof. Finally a ray of light in the midst of total darkness.

Gray Mountain. This was a different plot and it was nice to see that it was creative in the beginning, middle and the end. It moved fast and everyone in the story was credible. It is an enjoyable story where the heroine grows up and becomes a force to help her clients.

Gray mountain. Terrible

Excellent. Excellent read from beginning to end. By the end I couldn’t stop reading until I finished the book. You feel you really know the characters and hope and cheer for the good guys and want the bad guys to go down.

Gray Mountain. Easy paced, easy read with plenty of characters to dwell on. Typical Grisham book. Very Good.

Grey mountain. I have read several books buy this Author and really enjoy his style of writing. This was a good read although I did not like how it just finished without closer on the many topics in the midst of the story. Gillybocargo

Interesting. Learned about strip mining for coal. Sad situation.

Great Book without a real ending. Great book, the ending is lacking though, anticlimactic.

So disappointing.. The book started out all right but soon the lecturing on strip mining began. This is constant the first half of the novel! At one point Grisham writes that the main character needs a break from all talk of coal mining - unfortunately that courtesy was not extended to the reader. The last half of this book is better than the first but then the reader is left hanging. Nothing is resolved at the end. Also the characters seemed without a lot of depth to them. I will not be reading any sequels to this dud.

Gray Mountain. WOW! A fantastic read to beat the January blahs. C Law .

Disappointing. Story builds well until abruptly ends in last 14 pages leaving many unresolved plot lines. Last Grisham book for me.

Not his best.. Made my way through this book but kept thinking when will we get into the plot. It never happened. This book is much like "A Painted House" no real plot more like a day in the live of ??? Grisham is a very good writer, I have enjoyed most of his books. Grey Mountain however did not, in my opinion, live up to what I have come to expect from John Grisham.

Gray Mountain. This novel was an okay read for me. Interesting storyline though, and how it all unfolded.

Typical Grisham. Another page-turner by the master of the legal world.

Grey Mountain. Not the usual Grisham read. More of a campaign against an environmental issue. Took 2 weeks to read rather than the usual 2 days.... Would not recommend....

So lame!. Nothing worse than having a book recommended and it absolutely sucks. Don’t bother with this one.

Gray Mountain. John Grisham is losing his flair for writing intensely thrilling books. This one seems like another lazy attempt to satisfy publishers and fans. The book was ok, but far from his best.

Crappy-Not Worth A Cent!. Piece of crap. Just a setup for another book or a series. Wait for the real book(s) or maybe just forget Grisham.
