The Substitute Book Summary

Book one in the New York Times and USA Today bestselling humorous contemporary romance by Denise Grover Swank.

Megan Vandemeer meant to tell her parents about her broken engagement, but a month and a half later she finds herself boarding a plane home to her wedding. Having stretched avoidance to its limits, it's time to come clean--a terrifying prospect since her mother is sure to blame her rather than her cheating, emotionally frigid ex. A couple of drinks and two Dramamine later, Megan finds herself spilling her sob story to the tall, dark, and handsome stranger in the seat next to her.

With only one week left to save his business, Josh McMillan boards a plane to Kansas City in a last-ditch effort, leaving the details to chance. An unexpected answer is delivered in the form of the beautiful brunette beside him. Though she’s completely loopy, her honesty, openness, and humor charm him. So when she passes out before landing, he helps her off the plane--a good deed that leads to a colossal misunderstanding. Her parents assume he’s her fiancé. In a twist of fate, the mix-up might help Josh save his business, so he plays along, figuring he can help Megan too. All he has to do is stage a public break up convincing enough to appease her mother.

Josh is only supposed to be a substitute groom, but the more time he and Megan spend together, the more their pretend engagement starts to feel real…and the less they want to break it off. Can a relationship that began as a farce turn into happily ever after?

I always turn to chick light when I need to feel some warm and fuzzies. And this hit the bill. While I felt like Megan's parents were a little stiff and flat, especially the mother, the others were well fleshed out and believable and the author really has you rooting for the couple. Good read!

Fun read, with some laugh out loud moments throughout the book. Story kind of disappeared in the end, which was a bit disappointing. Overall, entertaining.

But one star would suggest that I didn't enjoy parts of this and I did. The MC's friend Blair, her mother, and her brother were terrible and if she had gotten to confront them in meaningful ways that could have been okay, but the explanation for Blair's and the mom's behavior was insufficient. Blair was cruel. She never approached any conversation with delicacy. The excuse was that she was protective but that didn't translate. The MC's mom was excessive. The brother, Kevin, was also cruel and what guilt he felt made him behave terribly. He doesn't know he's attacking the wrong person but even if he was attacking the right person he should have had a conversation with his sister first. He should have tried listening to her instead making a decision about her life based on fragments. Also, when there was an opportunity for him to act against the guy he thought the hero was *crickets* Nothing. He didn't even say anything. The romance was okay but not terribly believable. Four days could be enough with more time spent talking about other things than your shame engagement and the lie you're trying to maintain to keep it up.
