Becoming Steve Jobs by Brent Schlender & Rick Tetzeli Book Summary

There have been many books—on a large and small scale—about Steve Jobs, one of the most famous CEOs in history. But this book is different from all the others.

Becoming Steve Jobs takes on and breaks down the existing myth and stereotypes about Steve Jobs. The conventional, one-dimensional view of Jobs is that he was half-genius, half-jerk from youth, an irascible and selfish leader who slighted friends and family alike. Becoming Steve Jobs answers the central question about the life and career of the Apple cofounder and CEO: How did a young man so reckless and arrogant that he was exiled from the company he founded become the most effective visionary business leader of our time, ultimately transforming the daily life of billions of people?

Drawing on incredible and sometimes exclusive access, Schlender and Tetzeli tell a different story of a real human being who wrestled with his failings and learned to maximize his strengths over time. Their rich, compelling narrative is filled with stories never told before from the people who knew Jobs best, and who decided to open up to the authors, including his family, former inner circle executives, and top people at Apple, Pixar and Disney, most notably Tim Cook, Jony Ive, Eddy Cue, Ed Catmull, John Lasseter, Robert Iger and many others. In addition, Brent knew Jobs personally for 25 years and draws upon his many interviews with him, on and off the record, in writing the book. He and Rick humanize the man and explain, rather than simply describe, his behavior. Along the way, the book provides rich context about the technology revolution we all have lived through, and the ways in which Jobs changed our world.

Schlender and Tetzeli make clear that Jobs's astounding success at Apple was far more complicated than simply picking the right products: he became more patient, he learned to trust his inner circle, and discovered the importance of growing the company incrementally rather than only shooting for dazzling game-changing products.

A rich and revealing account that will change the way we view Jobs, Becoming Steve Jobs shows us how one of the most colorful and compelling figures of our times was able to combine his unchanging, relentless passion with a more mature management style to create one of the most valuable and beloved companies on the planet.

Great Book. I learned so much about Steve. It increased my desire to be creative!

Becoming Steve Jobs. Just a great read! A masterpiece and extraordinarily accurate. I am very proud of Brent for this work.

Becoming Steve Jobs. Having returned myself to fulltime child psychiatry private practice at the tender age of 76, I am inspired by Steve's example of a challenging -yet successful second "coming of age" to complete something that must be done to improve others' learning and contributing to understand our brain and having fun doing it. His pictures greet me each time I open and close my office door. Noisy old Mac tower, new silent Mac cylinder, laptop, Mac mini, Cinema Display and Airports all over the house sleep and their lights wink in silent homage to his memory. I am confident his company is on solid ground. Jaime Ayala, MD

Best read in years. After reading a number of articles and books about Steve Jobs, like many people, I thought the book, "Steve Jobs," would be the final chapter. While I respect Isaacson's authorized version, this book, "Becoming Steve Jobs" completes the story. I actually worked for Apple when Steve first came back, and it will truly be something I will treasure forever. Thank you for this outstanding, inside and honest piece of the life of one of history's most brilliant minds, and then greatest second act in the history of corporate America. Someday, I hope to come back to Apple, and help change the world. This book captures that spirit and the understanding of the man who helped us all see the future in a better way.

The best book about Steve Jobs to date!. A beautiful warts and all book about the life of a great person. It has the feel of the story of a multi-dimensional human being who grew and changed through the years. Highly recommended!

Very Informative!. Excellent book about Steve Jobs. Very informative and accurate. Love it.

Becoming Steve Jobs. Excellent read, written by people who had significant interaction with him!!!!

By far the greatest biography yet, perhaps the best possible. Written with a scope and nuance entirely beyond Mr. Isaacson, Mr. Schlender and Mr. Tetzeli’s book have largely written the beginning and end of what a biography of Jobs can hope to be. As there are only so many people who knew him over many years and who also have the chops of a biographer, it is unlikely to be surpassed.

Oops!. Show the life and readers decide the story. Tell the life and authors decide the story. Based on the sample chapter, this is the latter.

I do like it.. It was definitely a bit different than the other original bio but it was still a very good read.

Best source for knowing Steve Jobs. Exceeded Isaacson's book by at least 3 notches.

So much better than the disappointing official autobiography. The authors actually know what they are writing about and get much more into the man behind the curtain. They don't rehash old stories but tell antidotes to fit the narrative of what Steve was really like without sugar coating anything.

I could not put this away. Far better than Walter Isacson's biography. If I had to pick between these two , without doubt I would pick this one. It's written better, it's more intimate, it is more narrative. It helps that author was in the midst of it all over many years and personally knew people like Bill Gates and Steve's family.

Much better than Walter Isaacson’s book. This book gives you a much more complete look into Steve and the personal growth that made him into who he was in the last 15 years of his life. I rarely finish books but this one I read cover to cover. Writing this from my iPad Pro. It’s a magical device. The 10 year anniversary of Steve’s death is coming up soon. I wonder what apple will do now. They’ve been essentially just executing against the vision Steve set, for the last decade. They are approaching a phase in the life of the company where all the products that were conceptualized during the Steve era have been fully matured. Can they innovate and disrupt once more? Going to be very interesting.

The biography we deserved.. An astoundingly good work. Filled with lots of good anecdotes that I hadn't seen elsewhere, and this also paints a much more accurate picture of Jobs than the other attempts of the years. Highly recommended.

Where's the beef?. I've read all of these and like the passingly similar titled Second Coming of Steve Jobs, we are left with a writers assessment and far too many gaps of Jobs' own voice. Say what you want about Isaacson's but his book possesses more from Steve himself - a historical necessity after Steve’s untimely passing. Really struggling to find out what exactly here is worthy of an entire book. 99.999999% in here we have read dozens of other times. Fire in the Valley is still the best overarching industry narrative, Isaacson's is more detailed on a personal level. Only a few blurbs in this attracting merely the most Jobs devotees. Not worth the re-runs. This could have been an article for the New Yorker.

True dat. This is the best book written about Steve, his life, his strengths and weaknesses. As an employee I witnessed some of the good and a little of the bad. On the grand scale Steve was a good guy, great leader and fantastic visionary. I highly recommend this read.

I was touched. Steve Jobs in all his strengths and weaknesses, strangeness and conventional habits, his craziness and soft-heartedness and the desire to do beyond what was thought to be humanly possible...showing us what it means to be as human as one can be. An excellent read.

Terrific. Great book, well written, and truly fascinating.

Way better then the new Jobs book. Loved this book on Steve Jobs. It has so much more depth then the issaacson book I read last year. It made Jobs out to be human after all. Great read.

Apple Steve. Just finish the whole book and now I truly understand what a strong movement in the universe made .. bite of the apple means!!!l can not live without my I phone OS plus .it sleeps with me with Steve to behold the dream!

Excellent, Enjoyable and Inspirational!. I read Walter Isaacson’s book and I feel this one is much more centered on providing an objective glimpse into a masterful man. The author allows us to see Steve’s weaknesses and strengths, but more importantly his growth.

Picking up this book right after 10 years. 10 years ago, I was in middle school. His official biography was the first english book I ever finished reading. 10 years later, right before I graduate from grad school and join Apple, I finished this book. Thank you, Steve. You have always been my motivation.

It's Not Often A Bio Has You Crying. Beautifully constructed journey through many of the experiences that shaped Steve Jobs. Avoiding fawning praise or unwarranted criticism with equal dexterity, this book 'gets' the man himself and explains why we who love the company he created do so.

Becoming Steve Jobs. Fascinating page turner. So well written. Huge learning for me.(Midwestern Family Doctor 30 years in practice) I found it at the airport bookstore in hard cover. Bought it from iBooks (which you probably know)Great Job. Great book.

Great book!. This book was to much better than the first one written. There are two sides to ever story and different views of people in different settings. I'm glad to see that we got to see the "business" and "personal" side of Steve Job in this book.

The BEST Steve Jobs book, period.. Much has been written about Steve but nothing has been written with the warmth, insight, and understanding of this work.

Well balanced, well told, fantastic book. Well balanced, honest, well told, just simply a fantastic book about a fantastic man. A must-read for anyone who is a fan of Mr. Jobs and/or Apple, Inc. Very inspirational, too.

A Softer and More Human Look. Taken together, Walter Isaacson's authorized bio and Becoming Steve Jobs, by Schlender & Tetzeli, give us the most accurate and meaningful picture we'll ever get. More than any musician or artist I can think of, it is possible to know Steve through the work he helped produce. Ultimately, the rest is subjective. Simple lessons for life and business. Customers are more important than the feelings of a company's employees. Providing quality, elegance, simplicity, functionality and always doing 200% is how to change the world. Steve seems amazing, because he embodied that approach to everything. That's the lesson. That's the high-order bit.

Love it. Great book

BECOMING STEVE JOBS. read it.

Great read. This book is a "must read" for anyone wishing to learn more about Steve Jobs! Learning more about the leader of what has become the worlds largest and most successful corporations was fascinating. While I don't read or recommend many books, i believe you will also find this is one which is hard to put down.

The best book about Jobs. I've read a lot of Jobs's books in the past decade and this one is the best in explaining his success. Highly recommend.

It has all the depth that Isaacson’s biography lacked. It is a genuine and intimate portrait, rather than a rehash of the caricatures and one-story rehashes of any other bio. It captures a -person- that was remarkable, not just the (many) remarkable things he said or did.

Fascinating!. I read this on my iPad Air2 fitting don't you think. Enjoyed the detail and truthfulness of the writing. Truly unbiased.

Wanting to be Steve Jobs. Great Read, with accurate encounters. The best book on Jobs to date.

Excellent!. I can't rate this book highly enough! Less biography and more meat and potatoes. Looking in on key decisions and events, how they came about and why. There's a lot more to learn from reading this book than just about Steve Jobs. The evolution of the human being and what's possible could well be inspiring to many. Definitely more than I'd hoped for picking it up!
