What She Knew by Gilly MacMillan Book Summary

THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

In her enthralling debut, Gilly Macmillan explores a mother’s search for her missing son, weaving a taut psychological thriller as gripping and skillful as The Girl on the Train and The Guilty One.

In a heartbeat, everything changes…

Rachel Jenner is walking in a Bristol park with her eight-year-old son, Ben, when he asks if he can run ahead. It’s an ordinary request on an ordinary Sunday afternoon, and Rachel has no reason to worry—until Ben vanishes.

Police are called, search parties go out, and Rachel, already insecure after her recent divorce, feels herself coming undone. As hours and then days pass without a sign of Ben, everyone who knew him is called into question, from Rachel’s newly married ex-husband to her mother-of-the-year sister. Inevitably, media attention focuses on Rachel too, and the public’s attitude toward her begins to shift from sympathy to suspicion.

As she desperately pieces together the threadbare clues, Rachel realizes that nothing is quite as she imagined it to be, not even her own judgment. And the greatest dangers may lie not in the anonymous strangers of every parent’s nightmares, but behind the familiar smiles of those she trusts the most.

Where is Ben? The clock is ticking...

Great!. Great easy read! Mystery & drama. Couldn't book it down

Loved it. This is a fantastic book! I couldn't put it down. I really liked her writing style.

PAGE TURNER. It’s been a good while since I’ve read a book that really kept me wanting MORE. I literally could not put this book down. I’d tell myself “one hour & I’ll go to bed” - two & a half hours later I’m finished with the book. I sat down a total of three times to read this book & I was done. If you want a gripping, thrilling read, then don’t look any further.

Interesting. I enjoyed the plot as well as each character's perception presented in chapter form. I would have liked more dialogue and less descriptive narration.

Kept me guessing until the end. Excellent book. I will definitely be reading more books by this author.

What She Knew. Great read!

Incredible!. Great book, a definite page turner and psychological thriller at its finest! Keep writing Gilly!

What She Knew. Totally agree with Uprise 24. Took me a month to read this book. First time in 30 years I have looked at the end to see if I could trudge through the rest of the book to finish it.

Page-Turner til the End. This book kept me up at night. It was filled with believable plot twists and tender feelings that brought me to tears. I highly recommend that you buy this one!

Heart wrenching. As a mother it really gets to you!! I do feel it was too prolonged and things could’ve been described and told quicker and simpler. I kept losing interest due to some parts dragging for lack of a better word.

What She Knew. I'm so glad to be able to write about this superb novel. The gripping novel about a child's abduction is the best of this genre that I've read. I stayed up well past my bedtime to find out what happened next. The book's characters are intriguing and wrought with flaws. Rachel's decision to let Ben go off on his own made me remember that I too had let my girls wander off at times. I can't wait to read some more of her books.

What She Knew. A consuming tale of abduction of a child, the pain of dysfunctional families and corrosive after effects. The format of the piece is for three different characters to express their pain, perceptions and insights throughout the unfolding of the plot. The suspense is absolutely riveting as law enforcement, the relentless judgment of the media and the agony of the mother of an abducted child come together in a powerful story. The novel reads like a documentary of a true story. I wasn't sure it was fiction until the interview with the author! Highly recommended!!

Very Slow. This book was very slow. I struggled to get to the end. I would not recommend this book

Wow!. Stay with it past the first couple of chapters then don't be prepared to do anything else but read the book. Characters are not predictable and it is suspenseful. When I finished the book, I wanted to follow up five years later with to check in on a them. Well written. Will now read more of this author's books.

What she knew. Great book

Awesome book. I honestly couldn't put this book down. It was great from start to finish.

Great book. Suspenseful to the end.

Well-written . . . and terribly depressing. This author creates characters who you care about - they matter to the reader from the very beginning. Telling the story through the first-person accounts of three different characters provides insight into each personality and describes vastly different perspectives on the same event. If you loved "Gone Girl," you will love this book. I should have absorbed the phrase in a review, noting "in the style of 'Gone Girl'" and avoided getting swallowed up by the unrelenting misery. I hated "Gone Girl" because of the lack of any redeeming outcome for any character at the conclusion. "What She Knew" provided the same sense of doom. Yes, the writing is effective, but be prepared for the feeling that there is no "winner" when you reach the last page.

Could not put it down. One of the most intelligently written books I've come across in years. I highly recommend this amazing book!

WOW!!. Best book I've read in a long time.

Okay. Okay

Well Done. It is overall a great story, especially for a debut novel. Nice twists and very interesting. I personally LOVED the imagery and descriptive language MacMillian used. Well Written.

Intriguing - can't put it down. Author captivated me & kept me intrigued from Chapter 1. She made me feel what the characters were feeling and you could feel the terror in the mother from the words that were written.

Kept my attention but the end fell a bit short. Loved the story- true page turner! I felt like the end was incomplete. I'd definitely recommend this book but just wanted to button up all the story lines to give it more stars.

What She Knew. It is an excellent book. It is difficult to put down.

Compelling, if a bit contrived.. An exciting read, for the most part. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. I found the extreme reactions and emotions of the characters at times to be rather contrived.

Somehow, some way, I made it... ...to the end of this dreadfully boring book. It almost put me into a coma and I kept going out and coming back, somehow picking up the very broken threads of it. I gave this author's last book I read a 5* review, so I was bitterly disappointed to find her name on this piece of drivel. The end was interesting & unexpected, admittedly but heaven help me, it was it worth digging thru muck to find a pearl? Absolutely not. If you buy and enjoy this book, look me up and I'll give you five bucks😉

Great suspense read!. Took a couple of chapters to hook me, but was a turn pager to be sure!

Harrowing story of an abducted 8 yr old. The story has so many suspects and twists and turns that it’s impossible to put down as the race against the clock to rescue or find the boy lingers on. After a week passes the more revelations come out against the most surprising and shocking suspects but nothing can prepare you for who took Ben and the events leading up to the day he’s discovered and the aftermath that family the detectives and all others have to face. Read this in one sitting as I couldn’t bear to stop until there were answers and his whereabouts was solved.
