The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers Book Summary

The acclaimed modern science fiction masterpiece, Hugo Award winner for Best Series!

Follow a motley crew on an exciting journey through space—and one adventurous young explorer who discovers the meaning of family in the far reaches of the universe—in this light-hearted debut space opera from a rising sci-fi star.

Rosemary Harper doesn’t expect much when she joins the crew of the aging Wayfarer. While the patched-up ship has seen better days, it offers her a bed, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and most importantly, some distance from her past. An introspective young woman who learned early to keep to herself, she’s never met anyone remotely like the ship’s diverse crew, including Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, chatty engineers Kizzy and Jenks who keep the ship running, and Ashby, their noble captain.

Life aboard the Wayfarer is chaotic and crazy—exactly what Rosemary wants. It’s also about to get extremely dangerous when the crew is offered the job of a lifetime. Tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet is definitely lucrative and will keep them comfortable for years. But risking her life wasn’t part of the plan. In the far reaches of deep space, the tiny Wayfarer crew will confront a host of unexpected mishaps and thrilling adventures that force them to depend on each other. To survive, Rosemary’s got to learn how to rely on this assortment of oddballs—an experience that teaches her about love and trust, and that having a family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe.

The long way to a small angry planet. The plot was boring. We’re going to make a wormhole through space. OK, got it. The funky, offbeat character building and delicate description was very good. I gave the author an extra star for that. But until she comes up with a reason to become involved with her character’s story, rather than just liking them, I’ll have to move on to more action packed adventures.

Warm and engaging. Warm and engaging aren’t words I would typically think would apply to a space opera, but they are truly applicable here. Becky Chambers has infused her richly-imagined universe with characters who feel alive and who treat each other with a rare kindness and love. In these divisive times, it’s especially comforting to spend time with them, and to imagine a future that might be a bit better than the present in which we are living.

Great fun. There aren't enough light hearted, funny sci-fi novels with tons of cool nerd stuff around these days. As many have pointed out, the book lightly touches on some dark material, but in the “all-is-well-that-ends-well” fashion, most conflict ends with a shrug, a smile and a slug in the arm. Thoroughly enjoyable and fun with some of the most delightful characters. I wanna hang out on this ship, with these people, more. I read it entirely in just a couple of days — with a smile on my face the whole time.

Loved!. Wish I had found this series sooner!

An excellent debut.... Of all the SciFi novels I read this year, this may well be my favorite (though others are close). It’s particularly good at roping the reader in to like and love the various characters. It’s also great at developing alien cultures whose richness competes with that of the humans (all to often in space operas “space aliens” end up being superficially-described “others”; that’s not the case here). The actual plot and its denouement are fairly simple and secondary to establishing the characters, which I expect (hope!) to see in sequels. The interpersonal issues tackled in the novel have plenty of parallels in our own timeline. If I had to point out a negative, it’s the “physics” of the universe developed by Chambers. It's not so bad as to detract from the ability to suspend disbelief, but it’s not _great_ either. The idea that wormholes at the main avenue to get around in the galaxy is fine (better than fine, really; it’s my preferred paradigm), but some of the details in how those wormholes are set up bother me. Then again, it’s probably better than just ignoring that issue altogether.

Loved this book. Great characterization and a wonderful story. So glad my friend recommended it.

Delightful and original!. A fantastic, original read, with faint echoes of Lois McMaster Bujold and CJ Cherryh. Narrative so good I reread whole sections, funny but naturalistic dialogue (how can one not enjoy Kizzy), and decent character development (although I never felt like I got to know Ashby). Best of all, very original alien species (again, I catch just a hint of Vernor Vinge and David Brin). I thoroughly enjoyed the concept of the Whisperer. I look forward to more political intrigue and descriptions of advanced science.

A very enjoyable read. Excellent characters with distinct alien backgrounds. Very original. I look forward to reading the sequel.

A fun romp through a comic book reality. The story is fun, character interactions enjoyable, and abundant alien species in a galaxy of various political divisions are engaging. I could give the book 4 stars on the strengths. The book suffers two major problems. The first is that the author relies far too much on exposition to accomplish world building. Page after page are dedicated to telling readers about the story background, rather than investing the reader in the story. It gets noticeable. Additionally, the physics are largely nonsensical, clearly more informed by comic books or anime than actual science. I expect a science fiction story to bend and even break some physics in order to support the plot. Wormholes or FTL communications, when necessary to the setting, are fine. Far too often, though, the author attempts to simply draw a gratuitous visual based on an obviously bad understanding of established science. It doesn’t help the story and becomes distracting. As a result of the exposition and goofy science, I find myself constantly disengaging from the story and losing interest. I’ll read a dozen pages, then set the book aside and read something else. Later, I pick the book up and try again, but only get a dozen pages in before repeating the process.

A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. Excellent read, great characters and a story that kept me reading. This is the first book I have read by this author, and I will definitely read more!

Not for me. Too wordy. Lots of explanations that I didn’t understand, but didn’t really need either. The characters were different but mostly believable.

Too juvenile. This series should be tagged as Child lit. It’s even too basic for YA

I Love Sissix (And Also Every Other Character). This book is precisely the sci-fi story I've always wanted, and I enjoyed every page. I recommended this book to my IRL friends before I even finished it, it's that good! The worldbuilding is compelling. The descriptive writing thoroughly unfolds the sights, sounds and smells the characters encounter. Of course, the best part of the book is the characters! I saw the book as a story about the differences in how people interact with each other, and this is handled very well in The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. It's been thoroughly a joy to read!

D. G. Myers. It starts off well enough with well written imagery and a fleshed out universe. However once the stage is set the story quickly devolves into a thinly veiled push for LGBT acceptance. The characters become formulaic and predictable. As if the push for 'anything goes sexual acceptance' wasn't enough then there were also a host of other liberal agenda items worked into to storyline. In short, allot of talent squandered to promote an agenda. Two stars for the imaginative settings.

Character Driven SF with Great World-Building. "The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet" is an amazing first novel by Becky Chambers. It is set in her now-expanding Galactic Commons Universe, which is filled with alien species of many interesting sorts. Rosemarie Harper is a person fleeing her family and her past on Mars, so she joins multi-species crew who operate and live on the tunneling-ship "Wayfarer." This crew becomes her new family, and the ship her new home, as they cross the Galactic Commons to establish a hyperspace tunnel to a new species that is expected to join the Commons. The world building in this space opera is excellent, you want to know more about everything and everywhere. But what really shines are the characters, and their interpersonal relationships. You really get into the heads of these individuals, relate with their points of view, and begin to feel for them. This is a very positive story, where so many novels are so grim, reading this will make you feel good, and want more. Fortunately, Ms. Chambers is writing more works set in the Galactic Commons.

Great book. Loved the world building and character development. One of the great things about sci-fi & this story is that it allows us to look at ourselves from another perspective and consider other ways of being. I read the whole thing in just a day or two-couldn’t put it down.

One of my favorite books ever. Great characters, neat worldbuilding, has stuck with me in a way few stories do.

Decent characters but no plot.. The book has a promising premise for a sci-fi adventure story, but the author misses the opportunity to develop it. Instead she spends the entire book developing characters and exploring their relationships, ignoring the overall plot that could have brought compelling conflict to those very same characters. Unfortunately, while her characters are distinct they are also superficial and predictable. This book would be better for a young adult market, ages 13 to 16. For anyone older looking for something more developed regarding a good plot, thought provoking themes, and entertaining adventure, I recommend you look elsewhere.

Awesome. Unexpected. Absolutely entertaining and wonderful. Love the creative flair. Enjoyed it, couldn’t stop reading. More please

A new favorite. I absolutely loved this book and have recommended to so many. Warm, fun, easy read where you fall in love this the characters.

I’m signing onto the crew, if they’ll have me.. What can I say. The title grabbed me and the book wouldn’t let me go! Imaginative characters built with such care as to make me want to be part of the crew. I’m heading straight to the second novel in the series as the adventure is certainly not over.

A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. This book is something rare in science fiction it has decent hard science and solid characters. This author has made a real universe with both beauty and the ugliness of thinking beings governed by their origins. The characters develop in three dimensions and this is a fun read. If you're a fan of Robert Asprin or Harlan Ellison you'll enjoy this book a lot.

Beautiful book. This is possibly the most beautiful book I have ever read. The characters are individual gems, distinct and three-dimensional in the best ways. I am personally drawn to the way the author draws realistic conflicts and situations, which kept me turning pages, but didn’t sacrifice the personal stories for a cheap bit of violence. The world - or I should say, universe - created here has depth and detail, and the exposition that clues you in to how it works is maybe the most deft and unassuming that I’ve ever encountered. You’re just dropped into it, and the author figures you’ll be able to come along for the ride, and it’s done so gently I hardly noticed that I was assimilating new perspectives about space, cultures, species….just wow. I love the story, and I’m really sad not to continue living with this multi-species family. Thank you for this ride!
