Malevolent by Jana DeLeon Book Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Jana DeLeon, the first in a new thriller series.

Everyone wondered about Shaye Archer’s past. Including Shaye.

Share Archer’s life effectively began the night police found her in an alley, beaten and abused and with no memory of the previous fifteen years, not even her name. Nine years later, she’s a licensed private investigator, with a single goal—to get answers for her clients when there aren’t supposed to be any.

And maybe someday, answers for herself.

Emma Frederick thought her nightmare was over when she killed her abusive husband, but someone is stalking her and tormenting her with mementos from her past. With no evidence to support her claims, the police dismiss her claims as post-traumatic stress, but Shaye is convinced that someone is deliberately terrorizing Emma…playing a cat and mouse game with only one goal in mind.

To kill Emma.

Many twists and turns. Surprising ending!!!!. Good read!

Suspenseful. From the first page to the last, you’ll continue to read this book until you are finished.

Excellent read. I’m not sure if I have read this series in the correct order, but I started with Malevolent and it was wonderful!!!!! I wish some of the others were free.. I fell in love with all of the characters and the writing.

Malevolent. Super! I couldn’t put it down. read the whole book in less than 24 hours. Can’t wait to start the next book.

A great book. What would you do if you were being stalked by your dead husband and no one believed you? Call Shaye Archer a young and bright private investigator who is probably the only person who could understand the evil you truly face. Malevolent is a great thriller that I just couldn’t put down. From the first chapter till the very end it had me wondering who the killer truly was. Loved this story and can’t wait to read more about Shaye Archer

Malevolent. One of the best books I ever read. An unputdownable story. Simple, straightforward with great suspense.

Excellent read. Really enjoyed this book. The way the author really makes you feel the terror of the protagonist, like you were feeling the same terror. Very well written, suspenseful to the end. Had me on edge front he start.

Awesome Book. I could read this again and again. Very well written and worth every minute. Best book I’ve read in a long time

Surprise ending. Started slow then really got going.

Malevolent. Awesome read more twists and turns than a rollercoaster and just when you think you have it, you don’t. Try it you’ll surely like it!

Page turner. I enjoyed this book from the first page. I liked the characters and their development. I can’t wait to read the next one.

Malevolent. Could not put this book down. Kept me on the edge of my seat.

Malevolent. Scary story. Read the book in 2 days. A lot of psychology throughout to analyze. Sad to think some people’s lives had this much hurt in them.

Wow!. This book kept me hooked. It has twists and turns and I really enjoyed reading it.

Malevolent. This was a very good thriller and I would recommend it . I gave it a 5 star. Lots of action & you never would have guessed the murder was until the end. Camie12

Wow wow wow. It’s hard to believe this is the same author that has written the Miss Fortune mystery series!! This is a very dark series, but incredibly well written, very thoughtful, plot lines. I’ve almost finished the series, so well written, reminds me of Karin slaughters works. Definitely a must read series, you won’t be able to put it down.

What a twist!. Great plot. Honestly wasn’t expecting that twist!

Best thriller ever. Malevolent is the best thriller I’ve ever read, and that is saying something given how much I read. The characters of Shaye, Emma, and Jackson are complex and interesting. The plot is carefully sculpted with just enough terror, just enough hope, just enough red herrings, just enough eeriness. My previous favorite, Loves Music, Loves to Dane by Mary Higgins Clark is awesome, but this book is better. I highly recommend Malevolent.

Malevolent. Riveting from page 1. Didn’t stop reading until I finished the book. Kept me guessing how the story would end and was completely surprised. Can’t wait to read more books about Shaye Archer.

Malevolent. I really enjoyed reading this!!!!!

Must Read. Being from Louisiana, I love stories set here. Especially mystery and thriller types. I have read every book Jana has written. I laugh out loud at her Miss Fortune series. This series is far different and I was more than pleasantly surprised. This book series shows just how talented and multifaceted Jana truly is. Many times I see the end coming. But this book truly threw me for a loop at the end.

Had me at the first page.. Had just finished this author’s first book in her Miss Fortune Mystery series which I essentially finished in one day. Then I started this one, which I, also, essentially finished in one day. It had me in the first couple pages. Very interesting storyline & characters. I really enjoyed reading this book. Will definitely be following this series.

Sinister. Great reading The writing was fantastic. Minima a

Do not read if lgbtq+ or had trauma in life. Spoilers after this paragraph. The author had me enthralled for the first 2/3rds of the book. I will admit that I was excited to start this series and even talked about it to my loved ones. However, it became abundantly clear that she doesn’t know how to write trauma in a believable way. Now onto spoiler territory, you have been warned *SPOILERS* Why must the killer be abused, traumatized AND trans? Why must you introduce HIM that late into the book? Why must we rehash the trans issues with Silence of the Lambs? Also, can someone let the author know there is a psych test involved in enlisting into the military? Someone without an education, or little education, coming from a traumatic home life could not enlist. The killer also used his real name, which the characters then misgender and use the wrong name for the rest of the book, and told an embarrassingly convoluted story about how his mother hated women, for no explained reason, so he had to become a boy. This certainly did not have to be in the book at all. It’s the anger I felt after watching Sleep Away Camp. “Surprise mentally unstable trans person” will never be a good twist in any story. Ever. Be creative and find different group of people to attack. Let us also not forget to touch on how surprisingly triggering this book can be. It touches on so many different types of trauma that I am SURE some readers couldn’t even finish this book. The author hits us with every traumatic event that could happen to not just women, but children as well. All in all this book seems like it was written by one of those white ladies with “live, laugh, love” written on a wall somewhere near where they keep their wine.

Dark. This was a fantastic story. I couldn’t stop reading this book until the end. The story is full of suspense and dark. Great read.

Malevolent. Excellent read w interesting characters and unusual twists and turns.

Malevolent. A fun read, fast action and any reader will be guessing how it ends from the second chapter. (Maybe earlier)

Nice. Overall nice book, start to finish was👌🏾

Do not read!. This was a complete waste of time. Ending inconsistent with the earlier chapters of the book. And we are supposed to know who the stalker is how??

A must read. Wow...A must read! I thought I was the one being pursued...it feels like you are right in the middle of the action. It’s a masterfully written book.

Great read fast paced. One of the very best ebooks. Great author. Moved the story line to keep your interest. Great descriptions without getting bogged down in repetition and boring detail. Highly recommend. Great editing. Well done!

Page turner.. I could not put this book down. I loved the story and the twist. The characters were very relatable,

Winner. Excellent book. Kept me wanting more and eager to find out who did it! Well done.

Excellent Read. Awesome book to read while on vacation, and every page kept me intrigued until the end. I will be buying and reading the next novel .

Loving these books and the author!!!!. I love these books, I’ve read almost all of them and when I do I’m going to be so sad.

MALEVOLENT. What an amazing mystery! Shifts and turns I couldn’t even imagine. I really enjoyed her characters. So real and human. Love it.

Malevolent. Great story line! Kept me guessing until the end.

Great book. I was a little concerned after reading some of the reviews but this was a very good book. I enjoyed the story and was surprised by the ending. Thought I had figured out who did it (had two choices) but wasn’t either person I thought. Even thinking I knew the answer to who done it the story was still interesting and creepy like a thriller should be. Some of the other reviews seem alittle nit-picky to me, and over analyzed, read the story and if you enjoy thrillers you will enjoy this book. If you don’t like abusive or unsettling situations then maybe you shouldn’t be reading thrillers. I’ve read other thrillers with much more nasty and descriptive situations than this one and I think that is the nature of the story. Something nasty is happening and someone’s got to figure it out. Overall, a very very good book, hard to put down

Malevolent. Absolutely great book. Absorbing from the very first page. Totally unpredictable! Lived it. Can’t wait to get the next!

Malevolent. Awesome; already bought the second one!

Malevolent. I really enjoyed this book was a real page tuner excellent characters very suspenseful!!

Malevolent. This book had me hooked from the start. Didn’t want to put it down and totally shocked at the ending. Masterfully done👏👏

I couldn’t put it down!. The writing flowed so well. I couldn’t put this book down, it got more and more exciting and I was on the edge of my seat. I loved the characters and am looking forward to finding out more about Shaye’s past.

A must read. Great story, had me guessing until the end. Well written and kept my interest.

Malevolent. I read this book in three sittings. It kept me wanting to continue to read! Loved it!

Absolutely Fantastic. A truly great read! Suspenseful, intense and nail-biting!

Malevolent. Wow! What an amazing read - it is seldom I get to the end of a book without having a pretty darn good idea of ‘who did it’. But in Malevolent, I barely had a clue. With hindsight, I could imagine I had an inkling but, in reality, I didn’t. I look forward to reading more books by this exceptionally good author.

Amazing read!. A story full of interesting characters with surprising twists and turns. It takes you to a dark place that you don't want to know about with disturbing and evil characters. I couldn't put the book down as it felt so real and authentic.

Great read. This was the first book I read by Jana DeLeon, but it certainly won’t be the last!

Absolute thriller. Loved every single page

Keeps you guessing. Omg brilliantly written, so many twists and turns. Loved it

I really enjoyed this book. This is the first Jana Deleon book I've read and I very much enjoyed it. The characters were well thought out and you don't have to wait until later books to get the background of the main characters. It was a good paced story and interesting. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the Shaye Archer series.

Malevolent. I really enjoyed this book and look forward to reading the other Shaye Archer books Judith Campbell

Great book. can’t wait to read more!

Definitely a surprise ending. Kept me wanting to read on and on. A twist in the end. I’d recommend it.

Thrilling Ride. It was like a nice ride on a boat that went through some rough waters and then smooth sailing. Some dark clouds appeared that would make you wonder if you’ll make it home in one piece. Then it all cleared up and you made it home alive!

Malevolent. Really enjoyed the story with the different twists. Was not expecting the ending.

Heart Stopping.... A great read that just sucks you in from beginning to end that is all but impossible to put down in between. Left me biting my lips at what was going to happen next!

Entertaining but a bit disappointing. This book had great potential and I recommend reading it but be warned that there are no clues as to who the killer is in the end.

Malevolent. Good plot, really liked it

Malevolent. Excellent read

Riveting. Fast paced suspense from cover to cover. An excellent plot which leaves you guessing until the very end.

Malevolent. A twisted mind blowing thriller that pulls you in....be prepared to read this book in one go as you won’t be able to put it down until it’s finished. Definitely will be reading this series!

Malevolent. This book had me on the edge of my seat the whole entire time!!! I loved it!

Worth the read. Work has been quite busy for the past few months so it’s been a bit tricky getting back into my reading. I’m grateful to the author for getting me back into the swing of things. Malevolent is an easy read and keeps the reader enthralled and wanting to know more about the protagonist’s history. I’ve purchased books 2 and 3 of which I’m certain book 3 Diabolical is likely to have been the best of the series. I’m a little bit uncertain as to whether or not I want to continue with the remaining books though. I do think the series could have ended there. I’m also starting to feel as if Jana DeLeon has a bit of a “formula” in her writing style that hasn’t ventured much from the 3 books I have read which is another reason as to why I don’t know if I’ll continue with the series. I enjoy fictional stories as a breakaway from the real world, but I do think the concept of someone coming from nothing into a world of wealth is a tad bit far-fetched and it would have been a more enjoyable read if Shaye had been more of a relatable character. Not everyone has the opportunity to overcome their difficulties with the help of money to back them. With that being said, it is very difficult to stop something once you’ve started so I might just end up finishing the series one day. But for now I think I’ll take a break and start on something new from Robert Galbraith which I have DeLeon to thank for getting me into this new genre. Thank you for your contribution to the writing world and for sharing Shaye’s adventures with us as well as some background about New Orleans which has always been a place I’ve wanted to visit one day.

Addictive. I am addicted to Shaye Archer, I cannot put these books down.
