The Grownup by Gillian Flynn Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Gillian Flynn’s Edgar Award-winning homage to the classic ghost story, published for the first time as a standalone.

A canny young woman is struggling to survive by perpetrating various levels of mostly harmless fraud. On a rainy April morning, she is reading auras at Spiritual Palms when Susan Burke walks in. A keen observer of human behavior, our unnamed narrator immediately diagnoses beautiful, rich Susan as an unhappy woman eager to give her lovely life a drama injection. However, when the "psychic" visits the eerie Victorian home that has been the source of Susan’s terror and grief, she realizes she may not have to pretend to believe in ghosts anymore. Miles, Susan’s teenage stepson, doesn’t help matters with his disturbing manner and grisly imagination. The three are soon locked in a chilling battle to discover where the evil truly lurks and what, if anything, can be done to escape it.

“The Grownup,” which originally appeared as “What Do You Do?” in George R. R. Martin’s Rogues anthology, proves once again that Gillian Flynn is one of the world’s most original and skilled voices in fiction.

Very intriguing until until it stopped short. Kind of fun for the imagination though.. This book is the usual dark, clever story you’ve learned to expect from Gillian Flynn. I thoroughly enjoyed it until the end. The problem is that you suffer from whiplash by the sudden stop. While I’d love for the story to continue… part Ii perhaps? I wonder if Ms. Flynn is challenging our imaginations as to how this plays out. I’m certainly going to think on it…

Ripoff. Do not buy this. It has no ending

The Grownup. Really glad I did not pay for this one! Could not read beyond page -10.

Yeah- really! And yeah - seriously!. People who give this book a bad review are the kind of people who need their stories spoon-fed to them and then tied up with a little bow. This is a short story that is both amusing and thought provoking. It doesn’t give you all the answers, but, hey, that’s life for ya!

Really?. Fast paced drivel to nowhere. At least she didn't drag it out like Gone Girl.

The Grownup. Inadequate ending

The Grownup. Very disappointing. Where is the ending?

Inspiring. This is a book that I believe shows the art of storytelling. No pun intended.

Why only 50 pages?. Good story, but it could have went on longer

Meh. It had so much potential. What happened? I was pretty surprised by Gillian Flynn with this one, but she'll always be my favorite author

August 17, 2017. Although the beginning of the book caught my attention on how she was giving hand-jobs the story went everywhere caught up with the wife's husband and a killing story weather the kid or the girl was right. Fast and easy to read, really enjoyed it.

Unfinished. It seemed like the book had a great story going and then just ended.

Quick little read. Seems unfinished. Not at all like any of her other work.

Quick and satisfying. Great short read. Leaves you with the thrilling twists Flynn is infamous for

Very Enjoyable...... A fast read...easily in one sitting with an ending as dubious as the one in "Gone Girl". Looking forward to her next work......

I wish I had known it was a short story. Would have been nice to have known it was a short story before I purchased it and wasted my money

Quick read. This was a great suspenseful short story. The ending kind of left us on the edge of a cliff. Now to patiently wait for another piece from Flynn.

Waste of $2.99. This book was a promising in the beginning but had a ridiculous abrupt end. Waste of time and money. I’d give it zero stars if I could.

If you like Flynn’s writing style you will enjoy this short story. I’ve noticed a lot of people were upset they didn’t realize this was a short story, though the page number is listed. If you enjoy Flynn’s writing style, you will appreciate this creative and brief story with dark undertones.

Cheated. So I love the writing so much I flew through the first chapter and bam, it was over. I must have missed the part that this was just chapter story. Boo

Too short. She had me in the beginning but then fizzled. She didn't develop the main character enough and didn't finish the story. Super unsatisfying. So brief that I am left thinking, "what the...?"

Good but abrupt. I truly hope there is a part 2 this short story........ I was left earning for more information and the next step I the plan.

Seriously?. Severely disappointed. Is this even truly written by Gillian Flynn? I hope not. Possesses only a sliver (and I'm being generous here) of Flynn's talent.

The Grownup. I only got 87 pages when I purchased the book. What a rip off from iBooks... It would have been interesting to see what happens to them😥💦

Unremarkable. So predictable. Characters are cliche to the point of being boring. So much unnecessary set up and then a sloppily quick storyline.

Quick Read. Great quick read, but wish it was longer!

Fun, fast paced short story. Fun, fast paced short story. Very twisty with such a compact story.

Short but So Sweet. Gillian never fails to keep me hooked. Grownup took me just a couple of hours to finish. While it's not a long read, it's so packed with delights, plenty of dark humor and a mysterious family, possibly living a real-life ghost story, it feels like you've read a whole novel. Of all her narrative voices, this one was my absolute favorite.

Too short. The length of this book barely qualifies as a short story!. Very disappointed.

Bummer. Partially my fault for not reading the reviews and looking closely on the details about the book but his was a SHORT story (like 50 pages). I definitely would not have paid had I done better research. It was an interesting read but not worth it for the cost. I'm ready for a new Gillian Flynn book!

Seriously?. Seriously, is this a serious? Short story? Wish I wouldn't have wasted money on this...

Not her best at all.. I love Gillian Flynn but this felt rushed and trite. The protagonist tries to be clever far too often and it's distracting. The ending is also extremely lackluster and anticlimactic. It's not a bad plot but it's executed poorly. Overall I'm a bit peeved that I spent $3.

It's a story!. It's a fun short story I read it in about an hour. Don't buy if you are looking for a full novel. I didn't mind the ending as much as everyone else did though!

The Grownup. Dumbest book I have ever read. Wish I didn't waste money on it.

Disappointed. So, firstly, I made the mistake of assuming this was a full on novel. The book is only 80 pages long. I was really looking forward to this story because I love everything else Gillian Flynn, but I was truly disappointed with this story. It started out fairly decent but the ending was atrocious.

love. dying for a fourth gillian flynn novel! I've reread all 3 countless times. so tired of people promising anything is the next gone girl. if it didn't emerge from flynn's creepy, brutal, but feminine mind, it's nowhere near gone girl.

Awful. I’m an avid reader especially of mystery/thriller novels and I was not impressed at all by this novel. Compared to her other books this was not great, big let down !
