The Autobiography of Malcolm X Book Reviews
The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X Book Summary
ONE OF TIME’S TEN MOST IMPORTANT NONFICTION BOOKS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY
In the searing pages of this classic autobiography, originally published in 1964, Malcolm X, the Muslim leader, firebrand, and anti-integrationist, tells the extraordinary story of his life and the growth of the Black Muslim movement. His fascinating perspective on the lies and limitations of the American Dream, and the inherent racism in a society that denies its nonwhite citizens the opportunity to dream, gives extraordinary insight into the most urgent issues of our own time. The Autobiography of Malcolm X stands as the definitive statement of a movement and a man whose work was never completed but whose message is timeless. It is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand America.

An important book in black history. Enjoyed the journey through Malcolm X’s eyes. Great read. An important book to read to understand why he was how he was.
The Autobiography of Malcolm X. This book is over thirty years old but is relevant in today's world. Each time a black man is shot dead in the street for no apparent reason by a white police officer, the need to examine race relations is brought out. The fact that it is necessary in the year 2016 to rally around the theme "Black Lives Matter" is a testament to Malcom's teachings. Will America ever come to terms with race relations is the question?
The Evolution of a Man. I grew up in a house with a lot of rules. What to read, how much TV to watch, making your bed every morning, what we had for breakfast, and so on. I thought a lot of my father’s house rules were due to his military time. I know see that many of them were Islamic rules also since he was a Muslim. Malcom X was a man of many rules, from his hustler beginnings, to his days at the forefront of the black empowerment movement. It’s the evolution of those rules and more importantly the progression of the man and his ideology that is so fascinating in this biography. I generally dislike when I hear someone say that people cannot change. I like to believe that like coal, the pressures of everyday life work to change and refine us hopefully into diamonds. In actuality, we resist change, deeming it something inauthentic or forced because we did not design it for ourselves. Perhaps we should learn to lean into opportunities for growth; at least for the sake of curiosity if not for some existential crisis. It is in the reflective process that we are able to see the through lines of history and the connectedness of even the smallest decisions to our present state. The way in which this autobiography was recorded with Alex Haley captures that meditative assessment of the past to present. Though a controversial figure, I think this book is an important read for anyone wanting to understand a personal journey, philosophical growth, and the struggles along the way.
Thoroughly Enjoyed!. Malcolm X’s Autobiography was an amazing read. I definitely learned some supervising facts about Malcolm X’s life that I never would have known. Learning about the political, social, religious, and most importantly RACIAL plights during the 1900’s definitely brings it full circle as to how the black man is unjustly treated in today’s time. I would recommend this book to anybody, any race, any color, and any religion.
#1. By far the best book I’ve ever and probably will read in my life. And I knew this midway through it.
If this book doesn’t change…. It this book doesn’t change your life it should, at the very least, change whatever you think you know about Malcolm X.
Incredible Read. Changed my perspective!
One of my faves. Eye opener!!
Audiobook. Would really really really appreciate an audiobook:)
The book. I never knew he was Muslim, wow his journey to Islam is so inspirational. I wish he were alive today 😕
Amazing. Splendid and moving. This book is a must read. El-Hajj Malik El-Sabazz, was was man.
A must read. A must read for anyone who wants to be a better human being...
Iconic. This book has changed my life!!! Power to all People, including my People!!!
Speechless. I’ve seen the movie so many times, I felt it was only fitting I had to read the book and it was so good. Gave me a different understanding of the moving going forward
El Hajj Malik al Shabazz. Not sure where to begin, but I’ll say that it’s a must read. I initially downloaded the book and begin reading it and then I bought the hard copy to annotate more in it. This literary piece is full of insight of America and the modern world as we know through the lens of someone who came from the bottom to awaken by the very power of Allah to metamorph into a prominent Historical figure of the 20th Century. His awakening is one relative to the Black men of today whom life’s value to yield jewels some 60 years later. I love seeing the Malcolm before and after transformation from the bottom to becoming his highest self able to be pure and selfless which are attributes missing from the modern people these days. RISE IN PEACE EL HAJJ MALIK AL SHABAZZ
Must Read. I’ve never felt so much happiness, sadness, anger, frustration from reading an autobiography, but something about Brother Malcolm made me feel these emotions. As someone who has studied a small amount of the man, this books gives great incite to a very complex man. Great book, must read.
This one is for the history books; it just feels in the details of 20th century Black history!. The best autobiography I have ever read. A must read for who ever desires to be woke, if they are asleep politically and socially.
Top 10 must reads of all time.. Book leaves you speechless and is hard to put down once you get reading every day. Would recommend this book to everyone, especially in a time of today where racial injustice is still alive by the systemic racialism that has been here from the very beginning.
Amazing. Required reading for any African American....for any AMERICAN!
Great Journey. So much life lived in a few years. Interesting rollercoaster ride
Great autobiography. It's amazing how far and the difference a person can make through his will for accomplishing things.
An inspirational story. Malcolm X’s life was one full of pain, loss, confusion, and change. With this change, he was able to truly improve himself and weaken the bars of racisms for everyone in the entire world. He was unafraid to say what others wouldn’t and his courage was inspirational. Sadly, he was assassinated shortly after became guided on the right path, but his legacy will remain forever.
Freddy Douglas. Beautifully written story for a meaningful life!
Life changer. Must read! No matter skin color or nationality or decree!
👎. Malcom x was not a good man, he was a member of a black nationalist organization who considered all whites to be the devil and he ended up getting killed because he disagreed with the noi’s anti white preeching.
A MUST READ!. Amazing
Amazing Read, Amazing Story. This book shows the struggle of a black man beaten down by his own society over and over again. A book like this should be mandatory in all schools.
One of the Most Important Books Every Written. One of the most important reads for any revolutionary student of the struggle against white supremacy and also those who simply love history and would like to understand the Man. Please don’t stop reading until you finish. You must see his before and his after. BOTH absolutely necessary and should be considered mandatory understanding for the American peoples psyche. Malcolms depth, tenderness, intensity, darkness, light and ferocious love for his people is revealed in this book and it is a MUST read for every man woman and child.
Great read. An inside look into the life of Malcom X and his life of crime before becoming a voice for African Americans. A roller coaster of a ride . Addicting and eye opening
Where Life Takes You. Very few books can have you go on an emotional journey of a man who has been deceased for almost 60 years and still feel as though he is still with us today. A man who had went through a metamorphosis in a time where black men were not allowed to mature and evolve let alone were viewed as human beings. Malcolm defied the propaganda of black men with his high level of intelligence and discipline. Malcolm your journey was short and had its ups and downs but it was a beautiful journey nonetheless! Thank you Malcolm! We as a people are proud of you around the world. You have touched many lives including myself. You have taught me that life is about taking risk and that change is incumbent as a human if one wants to esteem to reach the highest point of human achievement: Spiritual Victory! Once again thank you El-Hajj-Malik-El-Shabazz
The Greatest Book I Have Ever Read. Words cannot describe the emotions I felt when reading this book, and after finishing it. This was a master piece written about one hell of a brother. Great read for anyone not well informed about the man, Malcom X.
Great read!. Great read! I didn’t want to put the book down. I was able to learn a lot more about who Malcolm Little and Malcolm X was and what he stood for.
Misunderstood. El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) is very misunderstood, but this book sheds light on everything that he has done for black people and Muslims. His journey from a hustler and a robber that went to prison, to a racist Nation of Islam Minister (the racism was wrong, but it made sense why he believed in it), to an amazing Sunni Muslim that was no longer racist, shows that everyone deserves a second chance. We will never forget what El-Hajj has done for black people around America and the world.
Very Good book. I had to read this for my Racial and Cultural Ethnic Class and this book is really good. It tells the story of Malcolm X and how he had impact people with his outspoken words. He’s been important to all of of us when it comes to black history.
An Unforgettable Book. Such a powerful and influential book written by an inspiring man with a beautiful personality, El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. From the very beginning, I was engaged and it definitely became my favorite book!
Required reading. You need to read this book.
Mandatory Read. Socratic to the core
The Autobiography of Malcolm X. This book should be required reading for all Americans particularly white Americans. It tells the story of a true American hero. Malcolm X overcame the ignorance and brutality of white Americans to make a large impact on the world. He rose from an extremely oppressed childhood to become an international leader. He could have become a peacemaker equal to Gandhi, King, and Mandela. Unfortunately, he was assassinated. He died, in part, due to the indifference of the white police who were supposed to protect him. Due to his impact, his spirit lives on.
Amazing timeless read. I’ve put this book off for almost 2 decades but I am happy to have picked it up after all the summer marches and movement for freedom picked up in 2020. Such a refreshing read and crazy that some things still haven’t changed. I highly recommend it. This should be a school “must read” book for students.
This is the definition of being “woke”.. After reading this book, I felt as if I had met Malcolm X. It was like I suffered, learned, and traveled along side him. He was assassinated years before my birth. I would have loved to have been there while he delivered his speeches. He was a man that faced tribulations throughout his life. No matter whether you agreed with him fully or not at all, he was the kind of person who earned your respect and admiration.
Great read!. This is basically Malcolm X talking to you and telling you his truth. Must read!
The story of a “shining black prince”. Words couldn’t begin to express the level of influence that the Autobiography of one Malcolm X has held on me. In taking months to finish, for simply not wanting the incredulous truth regarding American society and the human experience as a whole, to come to an end. From the streets of Harlem, to the great Hajj in Mecca. From Malcolm Little, to El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz. Malcolm stood as a testament to the strength of a nation comprised of 22 million African-Americans, grappling for equality within “the wilderness of North America”.
Black Power. I Really Like This Book I Read So Many I Can’t Stop R.I.P Malcolm X Never Get You
absolutely astonishing. i will never forget this book
Distorted View Of History. As another reviewer mentioned this guy was not a good man. He was a racist of the highest order, and this book doesn’t reflect on the mans true character. The irony here is that the very same man that he initially wholeheartedly endorsed was more likely than not connected to his big sleep. He preached hate and venom with racism always being the common denominator. He was a thug in a bow tie affiliated with a thug organization. He was certainly nothing or no one to aspire to....
A books that paints a great picture. This was one of the most engaging books that I have read in a long while. The book brings profound perspective of the Black American community that one can learn from and it is a great story of how deep conviction can reverberate and transform others.
Fantastic. I can’t believe how ignorant I have chosen to be. This book has ignited within me to read more, find out our history, and to celebrate being a black Woman.
Awesome book. Worth every penny.. I am a better person after reading this book and I truly believe everyone would benefit reading this.
Growth, Discovery, and Re-invention. Malcom X in his own words. What more do do you need to know?
Every black man in America should read. Great book opened my mind to another level that I didn’t know was there
