Troy Phelan, un viejo multimillonario con un cáncer terminal, se encierra en su lujoso despacho para escribir su último testamento. Está furioso con sus hijos y con sus ex esposas, que llevan tiempo esperando con paciencia carroñera que el tumor del tamaño de una pelota de golf que crece en un rincón de su cerebro acabe con su vida y puedan, al fin, heredar su fortuna. Lo que no imaginan es que él se ha guardado un último as en la manga. No permitirá que el cáncer se lleve su último aliento. Ha determinado cómo y cuándo dejará este mundo: saltará por la ventana de su ático y les dejará pasmados. La lástima es que no podrá ver sus caras cuando descubran el testamento, según el cual lo lega todo a Rachel Lane, una hija ilegítima de la que nadie sabe nada.
