The Weekenders by Mary Kay Andrews Book Summary

Some people stay all summer long on the idyllic island of Belle Isle, North Carolina. Others come only for the weekends-and the mix between the regulars and “the weekenders” can sometimes make the sparks fly. Riley Griggs has a season of good times with friends and family ahead of her on Belle Isle when things take an unexpected turn. While waiting for her husband to arrive on the ferry one Friday afternoon, Riley is confronted by a process server who thrusts papers into her hand. And her husband is nowhere to be found.

So she turns to her island friends for help and support, but it turns out that each of them has their own secrets, and the clock is ticking as the mystery deepens...in a murderous way. Cocktail parties aside, Riley must find a way to investigate the secrets of Belle Island, the husband she might not really know, and the summer that could change everything.

Told with Mary Kay Andrews’ trademark blend of humor and warmth, and with characters and a setting that you can’t help but fall for, the New York Times bestseller The Weekenders is the perfect summer escape.

Great Summer Read. Loved it! I need an island home.

The Weekenders. I loved this book!

Very enjoyable!. Great read! Not sure if I wanted to live at Belle Island or be a character in the book but it was so much fun. Loved reading it over the week of the 4th.

Another winner. Loved reading this book! Marriage , family, friends, murder, new found love! What more to ask for?

Well written. But oh so annoying. The people are entitled and boring. It felt tired the whole way thru, and a little difficult to relate to. Not enough anger at certain developments. Sorry.

I liked it. This was the first book I read by the author and I liked it enough to give another book a try. I found it a little predictable, yet enjoyable and it kept me entertained.

The Weekenders. One of MK's best. Full of drama, laughter and a thriller.

Loved it. One of my favorite books of the year. Kept me captivated until the end!

The Weekenders. This was my first read by this author. I find that I agree with many other reviewers. I enjoyed the book but the ending was too fast. You're reading along and then all of a sudden the author wraps it up!

AMAZING. This was my first book I ever read by Mary kay Andrews and I plan on reading all of her work now! Such an amazing story, great summer read. I finished it in July and am still talking about it in October! It truthfully left me speechless, you won’t regret reading this book!

Was o...k.... Overall, the book was ok. There were many long passages of meaningless descriptions that unnecessarily added to the length of the book; yet the ending seemed rushed. I spent 60+ chapters guessing "who done it" then it wrapped up in an anticlimactic chapter or two. In my opinion, the characters lacked depth and emotion. The author spent lots of time in detailed descriptions of the setting and culture instead of diving into the minds and relationships of the characters so the reader invested in each one. Initially, the plot had a lot of potential to be something dynamite but fell short of my expectations.

Quick Read. This book read like a "made for TV movie". Characters were serious but at odd times humorous. Storyline and characters could have been better developed. Although I read the entire book, I never felt "tied" to this book. I felt I had to finish it because I paid for it. Should have waited to check it out at the library.

Disappointed with the rapid ending. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book up until the rapid ending. I felt that the author was just trying to tie everything up in just a few short pages. I just can't help be be disappointed in how well it was written up until the end.

Didn’t want it to end!. What a great book.... Loved the writing and how each character came to life; couldn’t put it down!

Great Summer Read. Mary Kay Andrews know the south. I have loved reading all books including the mysteries! You won't be able to put this one down!!

Delightful. I am not a big reader, but I could not put this book down. It made me want to read more of her books. Outstanding!

SORRY IT ENDED..... ....hope there'll be a sequel. Really liked the characters, setting & the plot. It held my attention most times (ducked out & played Scrabble from time to time). Will read more from this author. Thought it was going to be corny like Danielle Steel or Gothic Romancy, but it was a book for grown ups - women, of course. If you don't like it, look me up and I'll give you 5 bucks.😏

Awesome summer read!. Loved it

Ugh!. I only finished this book because I paid full price and felt obligated. Completely ridiculous dribble.

The Weekenders. Very enjoyable summer read!

Good summer read. Entertaining book about a murder in the south. I like the characters and story line.

Fun Read. Grab a beach chair and enjoy! Great summer read.

The Weekenders. I am very fond of this author, and have read virtually all of her books. But I didn’t find this one to be as tightly written as others, and neither of the two threads running through it were very well developed. Mystery? Not really…little tension, weak clues... Love Story? Very sudden and with no real rationale. The best part, I think, was her handling of the daughter’s grief-stricken character…. I love this author, but I don’t think this is one of her best. Still, she’s always worth reading!
