Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi Book Summary

INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE'S JOHN LEONARD PRIZE • WINNER OF THE PEN / HEMINGWAY AWARD FOR DEBUT FICTION • Ghana, eighteenth century: two half sisters are born into different villages, each unaware of the other. One will marry an Englishman and lead a life of comfort in the palatial rooms of the Cape Coast Castle. The other will be captured in a raid on her village, imprisoned in the very same castle, and sold into slavery.

One of Oprah’s Best Books of the Year, Homegoing follows the parallel paths of these sisters and their descendants through eight generations: from the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, from the American Civil War to Jazz Age Harlem. Yaa Gyasi’s extraordinary novel illuminates slavery’s troubled legacy both for those who were taken and those who stayed—and shows how the memory of captivity has been inscribed on the soul of our nation.

A Must Read. A easy read. I recommend to anyone who wonders what there family history could have been like.

Captivating. This a an epic journey full of history beginning in Ghana to America back to Ghana. Well written and moving. A history lesson that should be read by everyone.

Homegoing. One of the best historical reads ever!! I was transported, tasted, smelled, saw, and could feel every single place, emotion, sights, food- It was like taking a time travel trip through history. So enlightening, no matter what your skin color, or belief system is. Best book I've read in a very, very, long time. Do your mind a favor, and read this incredible journey of a story!

A Beautiful Book. I wasn’t expecting it to be a collection of characters, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Such a beautiful book I’m so sad that I’ve finished it. Having to connect the dots within the first few paragraphs of each character really kept me interested!

CANCUN READ. On my vacation, on the beach, I couldn’t stop reading this book. I couldn’t put it down. Easily one of my all time favorite books now. As a Black American, I’m very appreciative of how the author portrayed our experience.

Powerful read. I normally pick books that are a bit lighter, chick flick types but after reading reviews on this one I decided to read it. It’s a very powerful book that portrays history in a raw and honest way. It shows that slavery and injustice isn’t just ancient history and that it still echos all around us today. But we can do better. We can be better. And there’s hope and good in the world if we take the time to look for it and be it.

100/10 ! Periodt. It took me forever to finish because I didn’t want to finish it. I really loved each story and personality readers experience. Such a great book !

Generations of Heartbreak. When a stone hits glass the crater from the impact flares into a web of disjointed lines. Each strand a different length and depth from the others. This is the image that comes to mind when reading this novel. The single pain of glass of a family lineage, fractured over and over again until you can’t tell where the breaks emanated from. Yaa Gyasi’s time and perspective jumping story of family, slavery, and Africa is simply amazing. Each chapter a vignette into the cascading damage and heartbreak from the generation before. The gaps between each characters perspective fill up the imagination with untold images and nuance, like the space between the sentences that Hemingway would write. This book gives a powerful response to those who want to move on from the slavery and Jim Crow of so long ago. Perfectly depicting how the trauma ripples through time. The waves of heartbreak eating away at the shore of bloodlines, country, and dreams. The redeeming and healing power of love is the thread that keeps the trauma from destroying everything.

Amazing. What a stunning epic of a story!

A must read.... This book is profound in so many ways: the story, the characters, the time it covers and the history it teaches and reminds. Everything is in this one novel. wow. you have to read it.

Lost. I wanted to like this novel based on great reviews. It kept skipping generations and going back that I got lost and forgot who was who. This was boring. I stopped reading before half of the book. Just not for me.

Was expecting more... but a good read.. Great family historical story. I was expecting more revelation towards the end.

Beautiful. An amazing story from start to finish.

Thank you. I listen to so many audiobooks and I was impressed with this book and the narrator. So indepth and the ending was a perfect finish to a perfect story that had me mad, happy, sad, every emotion. Thank you to the author I am waiting for your next big thing!

Beautiful book. Literally one of the best books I’ve ever read

Exceptional. A real eye-opener

Increduble. One of the best books I’ve ever read

Incredible. I cannot express how much I loved this book. So you should buy it yourself and read it! Enjoy this incredible piece.

The Best Book I’ve read since I started High School. I don’t know where to begin to praise this book. You will not want to put it down. The narrative and story telling of this book is amazing and you will be amazed at the connections, even the smallest bit, can make you weep for the characters. The empathy I gained from this book is something a book has never done for me.

Very very good. I fell in love with this book and it’s rich history. I love the way it was organized. Each story held such a powerful weight and message.

Homegoing, Yaa Gyasi. Assuming the research was done with the same quality as the writing, it is perhaps one of the most important historical novels I’ve read. Completely objective, amazingly creative, perfectly structured and gramatically flawless (which I greatly appreciate, even correctly used nauseated rather than nascious). I don’t know that I’ve enjoyed a book, or had my eyes opened by one more. Yaa, I am deeply grateful.

Brilliant. Amazing story telling!

Amazing book. I love this book. I love following each generation as they struggle with what it means to be black in this world. I lot of this book resonates with me. The ending is very emotional for me. It is one of my favorite books please read it.

Beautiful Novel About Ancestral Movement & Memory. This is a beautifully written novel that captures the lasting impact of ancestral movement and memory as it traces one family’s journey pre-slave trade to present day. It depicts the full range of the human experience and the complexity of life under imperialism and white domination. There is love, disappointment, triumph, heartbreak, resistance, and joy. I highly recommend this read.

Loved this book. I just finished this amazing book today. I loved it the characters felt so real and seeing how everyone was connected was great. I was recommended of this book by buzz feed and I am so glad I read it. I will be recommending it to many others

Time and Place. An astounding book. I am a black American with a Ghanaian name with no known lineage connecting me to Ghana. I have also led a Ghana Study Abroad program for a decade, and have navigated fire and water, in this book the sense of disconnection, the desire to connect, the questioning of traditions, the joy and pain of belonging. This book captures all of these feeling powerfully and eloquently. It’s propulsion through and time and place challenge both ideas; I finished recalling a timelessness and a placelessness that is at the core of critical reflection on identity and heritage. Thank you for this work.

This Book is Amazing. Being from Ghana, this book brought a smile to my with every page I read. Did not want to put it down Ever

Intriguing. It’s a must read for Africans. We need to read our stories to understand our past and how it affects the future.

Absolutely Amazing.. I laughed. I cried. I got angry. I got sad. But mostly, I saw myself. I gained understanding. What an amazing book. Spoke to me in ways that I never thought was manageable. I haven't read anything that was so heart changing in such a long time. This book was superb!

Amazing story. This book has been compared to Roots. I think it’s better. Traces 2 families from slave to present times. Stories weave through the families, and cover an amazing amount of history. The author researched the historical facts, and I really enjoyed it. With all the racial unrest in the world, I think this was a very timely book. I highly recommend it.

Amazing. Amazing read

Good novel. By going back to Africa and starting the story, the author makes this story more inclusive. She manages to capture a large gap of time without making you feel you want to know more about missing time periods. Her characters seem real and likable. You sense behind the story you are also getting a history lesson.

I don’t see it. Fragmented, boring content. A fire goddess? Come on. Way overrated.

There’s too much sex in this book. It should be rated r.. This book is basically pornography.

Amazing. Many thanks to Yaa Gyasi for crafting such an amazing piece of work.

Amazing!. Homegoing is a must read! Especially if you've ever been fortunate enough to visit Ghana and tour the Cape Coast Slave Castle. I couldn't put this book down. It was very eye opening and much needed. Thank you.

Simply amazing. I devoured this book from cover to cover. Exquisite writing. The author does an impeccable job at bringing everything full circle.

Lengthy. This author has a lot of potential , but I found this novel boring. Chapters skipped generations and then skipped backwards generations. It was difficult to follow the characters. Plot?? Not sure there was one . Historical references read like they came from Wikipedia.

Rich and captivating. Rich because it gave me a better understanding of our history and heritage. Captivating because of the all the details that made up the stories. I got to know all the characters and see their struggles and suffering for the freedom we have today. What a price they paid...

A great read!. Either AC novel or a group of connected short stories... Either way, a treasure!

Amazing Novel. I literally could not put this book down. Loved it.

Breathtakingly good!. Chills down my spine reading this book. Sheds light on what my ancestors endured. The battle is far from over but at least I know now that giving up is not an option. Because they never did.

Did not let me continue reading. I cannot continue pass “Effia” as the other chapters are greyed out, very frustrating as this is for a class.

Loved it!. Excellent book! Beautifully written!

Amazing. This book, I couldn't stop reading it, I keep dreaming about it. It has changed the way I see things. Amazing.

My favorite. This is the best book I’ve read in my life. I’ll leave it at that.

Homegoing excellent historical fiction. This book told the experiences of many people of Africa’s Gold Coast before slavery and their descendants in a way that truly touched my heart. I loved it and could read it again!

Loved it. Read this book in the paper copy version. Absolutely loved it
