The Dark Tower I by Stephen King Book Summary

“An impressive work of mythic magnitude that may turn out to be Stephen King’s greatest literary achievement” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), The Gunslinger is the first volume in the epic Dark Tower Series.

A #1 national bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen King’s most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,” The Gunslinger is “a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center” (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is “brilliant and fresh…and will leave you panting for more” (Booklist).

Well, I read it.. My Journey to the Dark Tower I recently decided to start reading the Dark Tower series but wanted the full experience so I got some recommendations and compiled a list of books relevant (hopefully!) to the extended lore. This book 3 on that list. As the first book that actually deals directly with the Dark Tower, I can’t say I’m wowed. I found my self pretty bored most of the way through. It’s a long walk through a hot desert and a long trip through a dark tunnel and memory lane. There are a couple points where the Gunslinger has some psychedelic experiences and I can say with confidence from my own experience that the author is writing from his own experience. So that was cool. Otherwise, as dry as the desert he’s walking through. I’ve got a desert in my brain now. So I guess that’s a nod to effective writing. Spoiler. Still no Dark Tower. If this guy’s journey is any indication, it’s going to be a while before I get there.

Beginning of an Epic. This series was one of my best ever all-time reads. Tempted to go through it all again. Begain as a reference from a friend for a plane trip, and ended years later with the final installment. An incredible imagination, and gifted writer, and characters (and a dog) that are amazing. OK, that’s it, I’m re-reading. Nervous about the movie, because the book was so brilliantly etched into my imagination not sure if a movie can match it.

Amazing. The movie is just like the book. Thanks Stephen King 😁😁😁

How about a sample?. Wanted to read a sample of the book before buying it but the sample of the actual story is only 3 pages! Cut out the forward!

This Is My Personality Now. The cadence of this book is biblical, and the lore of the world draws you in. The magic is visceral, in a way that you doubt magic is used at all. Motivations are alien and understandable, somehow. This book left me wanting more, and fearing what’s coming.

Enthralling. I could not put it down. Deliciously disturbing and bleak. Like drinking a fine malbec of horror.

Intriguing!. Not an easy read, but a novel that I have to step up my reading sensibilities. I am reward with an intriguing saga that leads me to want to read the next (novel) chapter. One thing that I notice, Mr King's way with words & the type of words use. (Which I at intervals would check definitions). Very nicely written, it sets the scene, the period and the tone!

Very open minded book. Enjoyed it

The Non Sample. WORST SAMPLE EVER!! Why do I want to read a forward, I want to read what the book is about!

Really can’t ask for more.. Roland is an extremely likable character and he becomes more so further in the series. King is excellent at painting a picture with words and making every character seem.. well.. alive. The movie does the book no justice. It’s quite actually an utter disgrace. Quit whining about the two page preview. It’s $10.. Do yourself a favor. Buy this book.

Plot lines unraveling.. There are too many things in this book that go beyond the fantasy genre and simply don't make sense within the context of this book. In the second book roland and his companions are surviving on "lobster" meat, eating the same food day in and day out but their bodies are susceptible to malnutrition as time wears on because they are not receiving nutrients. None of this happens to roland in the first book even though it is repeatedly stated that he eats the same thing for the vast majority of his journey. This, among so many other things do not tie in well to the overall story.

Yawnburger. Don't buy this book if your expecting a page turning action fest. It's far more allegorical than literal, and the narrative is pretty linear and uneventful. Not a whole lot like King's other books.

Can’t get the book after downloading. Downloaded book then it disappeared after an update! No more will I purchase books here.

Fantastic. Unique world. Tremendous character and world building. Finished it in two days. Couldn’t put it down.

Confusingly interesting.... This book was confusing but interesting. I want to see it through to the end of the gunslinger's long journey, but I had some trouble keeping up with what was going on and why in this book. I've read that the second book is much better so I will read it. This book took some effort to continue till the end.

Excited. I hope this book is good

Haven't read the book. But please give more of a sample then two pages of literature

Read the Whole Series- Wish I Could’ve Read More. Read the title. Not in the mood for writing the 20 paragraphs of praise this epic deserves, but this is one of King’s earlier books, and they still excite beyond comprehension. Too bad they made an awful movie about it. Recommend this series to anyone

Take a journey into his world.... The Gunslinger, the first book in Stephen King’s classic series, was a book that had me wondering if I would want to read any other books in the series because of an unfortunate twist that happened near the end of the book. Still, it was a good enough story to make me feel that it might be worth it to read the second book, knowing that if the second book was not much better than this one, I could stop immediately after that book. This is almost entirely a good book, though! I won’t spoil anything that happens, but for readers who are disappointed with the twist that happens so close to the end of the book, the second book definitely makes up for it! It’s the only downside to an otherwise enjoyable start to a series that just gets better with each book! I’ve only read the first four books, but I certainly plan to complete the series(with the exception of the graphic novels; I’m simply not interested.) If you like fantasy-adventure stories, join the gunslinger on his quest!

The Gunslinger. I had to stop after 75 pages of complete nonsense. It makes no sense, nor is there a coherent plot to speak of. I usually like Stephen King, so I would try one of his other novels.

Stick it out.... Hard to read/follow, but stick it out, the rest of the books are worth it!!

Dark tower. I can see that I'm not the only one that's frustrated with the sample do you listen to your customers

The sample sucked. I don't have $10:00 to pay for a book so I got the sample but all it gave me was a introduction and two pages of chapter one ugh why I want more then two pages

Didn’t enjoy it. The world is ugly, the characters are uglier. Stephen King’s writing flows and is as descriptive as ever, but I really couldn’t get into this one. The first half of the book drags, and the mystery of it all wasn’t enough to make the latter half worth it. The writing is oddly sexual in a lot of places to the point where a child describes his own mother as “scrawny but in a sexy kind of way” and it all gives the story as weird and uncomfortable tone. Also the way women are written in this book is terrible. Every time I started to emotionally connect to Roland as the protagonist, he’d do something to completely disconnect him from anything likable. A lot of people seem to really like this series, and maybe it gets better in other books, but I don’t think I’ll be reading more to find out.

“The Man in Black Fled Across the Desert......”. Stephen King’s “The Gunslinger” is “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” meets “Lord of the Rings” in a story that will leave you wanting more. It’s well written, very descriptive and easily some of King’s best work. I definitely recommend reading Marvel’s “Dark Tower” graphic novels to understand the backstory of Roland and other characters. However in later books Roland’s backstory is dived into so if you read the graphic novels then some stuff is spoiled. The IOS version of this book works wonderfully on the IPhone X, though I imagine it would work just as well on any IOS device. Lastly I recommend that you avoid the movie as it’s a blend of all the books.

A dark and mysterious beginning to this series. Roland is a gunslinger in this strange land. However, because the book begins in medias res, it is not clear what this means on this world; in fact, by the end of the book, his role and purpose are only partially explicated. King's writing is superb. The tone is eerie and dark. The plot comes in fits and starts, and often seems inexplicable, though the reader can garner important clues as the book evolves. A fine, fine book.

Best story ever told. I’ve read the seven books several times. I still get all the feels in all the same spots. If you haven’t read them, do yourself a favor and start here

A lot of typos. I have to re read sentences because words are spelt wrong and its grammar is messed up

Fraud Anyone?. This book was originally published in 1982. King took the "Song of Roland" and turned it into an abysmal claptrap that is difficult to read, a poor representation of the original, and an outright fraud. KIng’s writing shows a critical lack of talent and skill and to even resurrect this book should be an embarassment for both King and the publishers. iBooks shows a publication date of 2016, that may well be the date it was processed for electronic delivery but the actual publication was 1982.

First for me. First book I’ve read in a series. A very slow start but the last 60 ish pages were solid. We will view this as like a season one in a whole show and see how it comes together.

HEY SISTERS. Hooooooooooooooooot poop in a good way to me omg it was so good omg omg omg omg omg omg omg

Awesomeness. This Book Is Awesome !! I've read the whole series of the Dark Tower & they get better & better !! This Book Is A Must Read !!

sheer pleasure. Every sentence prose, every paragraph poetry. Perhaps the best book I ever read.

Hobits dont belong in a gunslinger story. Not that interesting.

Great book!!. Couldn't put it down! Such a page turner! Can't wait to start the next in the series! A must read!

I'd love to read this book.... However I'd like more than a 2 page preview before deciding to spend $10. Very disappointing and yet another reason I miss real paper and book stores

Amazing. You’ve got my attention, Mr. King. Write on, please! Your vocabulary is impressive Teach me More Professor I am listening profoundly.

Fine. Not bad, but not special.

The gunslinger. This is my third time reading this over 40 years. I find new and interesting things each time. The movie wasn’t as fulfilling as this book. This is not scary but more fantasy and alternate realities. Love the plot and characters

Love it!😍. Gripping and shocking page turner with a mysterious intrigue that keeps the reader glued to the page.
