Dear Gods I Loved This. All the richness and wildly imaginative details of fairy tales… but with three-dimensional and wholly true-to-themselves characters! I loved this with the same passion I reserved for *Spinning Silver* — and yet it’s mien was utterly unlike that story’s. “Coming-of-age” is an entirely overused description… but this story, and these characters, unfolded the way life does: in unexpected fits and starts, with gawping moments of realization. This was *delicious.* I dearly love Ms. Kingfisher’s rich reworking of stale and somewhat historically incomprehensible fairy tales… they feel so much more immediate and poignant, in her words, with her direction. Going back to my Kingfisher-binge, now…

My Heart Thanks You. This amazing book felt like I was given a second childhood. Not in a juvenile sense, but as a child who truly believed all the fairy tales. Where have they gone? They are waiting in books for our grandchildren to discover. I believe.

Awesome revamp of Snow Queen. (Yes, there is a f/f relationship in here, too.) Talking raven, running the reindeer road, various kinds of witches and wisewomen, the dreams of plants... Look, it's just awesome.

Excellent!. I read this in one sitting, and enjoyed it immensely. Now I just have to decide if my 10 year olds should read it too.

An Unexpected Delight. T. Kingfisher never disappoints, and I really enjoyed this story. I particularly enjoyed how she developed her characters along the way so that by the ending, the strengths as well as any long held misconceptions or illusions were exposed to each of the characters. The writer’s ability to show what love really looks from the inside out vs. the outside in is beautifully demonstrated throughout the last half of the story.

A Positive and Uplifting Modern Fairy Tale. “The Raven and the Reindeer” is a heartwarming fantasy novel by T. Kingfisher, which is the pseudonym Ursula Vernon uses for her works for adults. It takes place in a medieval alternate world that features magic, talking animals, and supernatural beings. This novel deals with one of the latter, namely the Snow Queen. Gerta was a chubby good-natured girl that lived with her grandmother in a quiet village. Next door lived her best friend Kay, a pretty boy with ice blue eyes. They grew up together, and she assumed some day they might get married. Then one cold winter’s night, Gerta thought she was having a nightmare. She saw the legendary Snow Queen’s flying sledge land on the roof next door, and she took Kay away with her into the sky. When she awoke in the morning, she found that her dream was all too real. She determined that she must attempt to rescue Kay, even though she had no idea how to do so. This is the beginning of her long quest to the far north. She will make friends and more along the way, and if she is successful, will face off against an implacable and legendary power. Ms. Vernon says in her epilogue that she had to learn a lot about Sámi and Finnish culture to write this novel, and these touches really make it different and interesting. Like most of her work it is a uplifting novel, which has warm characters, dry humor, and a positive outcome. I can’t help but recommend it!
