Embark on an exciting, adventurous, and dangerous journey through the galaxy with the motley crew of the spaceship Wayfarer in this fun and heart-warming space opera—the sequel to the acclaimed The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.

Lovelace was once merely a ship’s artificial intelligence. When she wakes up in a new body, following a total system shut-down and reboot, she has no memory of what came before. As Lovelace learns to negotiate the universe and discover who she is, she makes friends with Pepper, an excitable engineer, who’s determined to help her learn and grow.

Together, Pepper and Lovey will discover that no matter how vast space is, two people can fill it together.

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet introduced readers to the incredible world of Rosemary Harper, a young woman with a restless soul and secrets to keep. When she joined the crew of the Wayfarer, an intergalactic ship, she got more than she bargained for—and learned to live with, and love, her rag-tag collection of crewmates.

A Closed and Common Orbit is the stand-alone sequel to that beloved debut novel, and is perfect for fans of Firefly, Joss Whedon, Mass Effect, and Star Wars.

A Closed and Common Orbit. Again Becky Chambers took me on a ride to an unknown destination. It was tough at the beginning as my bearings were driven by a compass that just kept spinning. I almost gave up. But as Jane & Sidra showed me through their dogged and tireless courage, I wasn’t allowed to quit. Becky is so inventive and imaginative. Reading her is a privilege. I love this author. She touches me deeply and I can’t wait to continue these journeys in the future.

Loved it!. Loved the intertwining stories of these two characters.

Second book also a page turner.. Looking for a new universe where artificial intelligence beings are an integral if invisible part of most all societies? No? I wasn’t either but this second book brought another story of this aspect of the future. Looking forward to reading more by this thoughtful author.

A closed and common orbit. Gender biased, binary and non-binary AI’s with psychopathic writing. It was difficult to accept Sidra’s exoskeleton being referred to in the 3rd person and that the most interesting character, Jane, being mostly a non factor in the end.

Am absolutely fantastic book. I was brought to tears multiple times. A very impactful book.

Love!. Wish I found this series sooner!

Positive Character Driven SF. “A Closed and Common Orbit” is technically a sequel to “A Long Way to a Small and Angry Planet.” However, it really is a separate story set in the Galactic Commons (GC) Universe that was established by Ms. Chamber’s debut novel. It follows a few secondary characters from the former novel in their own story. Like her previous novel, this work isn’t so much about a science fictional universe, but instead is about people who happen to live in a science fictional universe. Our primary character in this work is a ship’s AI who has just been installed into an illegal synthetic body. She is being cared for by Pepper, a Tech, and Blue, an Artist. Most of the contemporary story of these characters occurs on a port planet in the GC, which is awash in aliens and GC culture. Alternating with this story is another story told about a little girl named Jane, who is on another world where girls like her are created in batches to work in factories. This gene-tweaked labor force supports the society of the Enhanced, who consider themselves an improved form of humanity. These two stories are told in alternating chapters till they come together beautifully, and the book begins its overall conclusion. I found the ending to be very moving, and shed a tear or two when I read the last line. If you are seeking science fiction of galaxy spanning scope, and filled with lots of action, this novel is not for you. Ms. Chamber’s writes very personal and intimate stories about people, good people, who strive to overcome adversity, and treat others well. These are positive stories, that make you feel good. That’s a rare thing these days, and something I appreciate. I was so impressed by this story, I went ahead and pre-ordered the next volume in the GC series right after I finished reading it.

Well-written!. Great character development and exciting adventures.

A Long Way To A Small Planet. For my personal tastes, the human content is whats’ insufficient or missing in much of science fantasy writing; but not this book or her other that I read. Becky makes these relationships the central point of her books, wrapped with the technology and futurism that most of us crave. My benchmark for this type of writing is “The Mote in God’s Eye” by Pournelle and Niven. Totally enjoyable, and relatable!

Great Book about AI. Chambers tells the story of an ariicial intelligence and a person fenetically modified for a certain type of work amidst a multi-spsecies civilization.

JaxGTO loved it. Great book. Great characters. I read the other book first. Both great reads.

Awesome read. Couldn’t put it down at times.

Wonderful new perspective!. It is so refreshing to read sci-fi that comes from a woman's perspective. The characters are engaging and their struggles with identity, purpose and place in society give the exotic locations so much more depth and vitality. The action and sense of adventure will sweep you in and make you want to keep turning pages. A great story!

Amazing book!!!. I’m having a wonderful time reading this series by Becky Chambers and this book was an absolute joy to experience! I love how she takes the reader into the vision of an artificial intelligence, a very unique and interesting perspective! This book has highly lovable characters, a great story and great atmosphere, I had a blast reading this book and I’m looking forward to checking out the next one in the series!!!

This is truly a “must read”.. Thousands of books in my library and this one will always be recognized as special. Read it to understand why.

Set in the same universe...but not a sequel. Most of us search for meaning and purpose to our lives. But how do you find it when you are an AI? The variety and diversity of characters / aliens in the novel are enthralling and stimulating. A most enjoyable read.

Wonderful. Great story, great characters. An eye-opening exploration of our place in the universe, and our choices relating to each other.

Need an Extra Dose of Hope?. Super fun to read! Her characters, and their colorful lives bring us hope as they struggle to collaborate and trust themselves and each other. With a clear eye, Chambers embraces diversity, mutual respect and love.

Oh Stars Yes!. Please take this the right way: If I had to describe Becky Chambers’ Wayfarer books, I’d say they’re are like the realization webcomic Questionable Content multiplied by the Star Wars Rebels cartoon series (minus the needless violence) and then some extra cool poured on top. It’s proof that you can be wholesome yet futurist, while still having fun. Her characters and worlds are inspired and artfully crafted - and adventuring with them leaves me feeling like I’m a similarly inspired and artfully crafted character who just landed on a new world too.

Very good read. Wonderful characters you can really care about

Excellent as always. Every book I have read from Becky Chambers has been a kind delight, somehow hitting me at the precise moment I have needed it. I feel deeply seen and understood by these books, they’re like reading a hug. I found this one to deal with grief, fear, and finding yourself beautifully. I wish there was an infinite supply of books from this author. Pick this one, and all of them up, do yourself that favor.

A Closed and Common Orbit. A marvelous book! Thoughtful look at life from human and AI viewpoints. Outstanding world-building! Highly recommended! This is my second reading and I will be reading it again in the future.

Big points for charting a new course in the series. Becky Chambers gets big points for taking the series in a new direction. While the first book is light hearted and fun, this book takes a more serious tone and grapples in greater detail with some of the cultural dark undertones of the Galactic Commons. In spite of the lower rating I gave it, the book is very good - and more importantly a very ambitious second chapter in the series. But to be honest, at times, I found it a little boring - and left the book unattended for long stretches - something I never did with book one. I finished book one in a couple of days. Maybe these facts are more a reflection on me than the book, however, I did feel that since the entirety of the book follows just two story lines, at times it suffered from a pinch too much tedium.

Best Sci-Fi yet!. Its playful and it’s thoughtful and it asks to look at human problems through a non-human lens. So good.
