A small town hides big secrets in The Dry, an atmospheric, page-turning debut mystery by award-winning author Jane Harper.

After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke’s steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now more than one person knows they didn’t tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead.

Amid the worst drought in a century, Falk and the local detective question what really happened to Luke. As Falk reluctantly investigates to see if there’s more to Luke’s death than there seems to be, long-buried mysteries resurface, as do the lies that have haunted them. And Falk will find that small towns have always hidden big secrets.

Could not stop reading!. First novel I’ve read in a long time. Not disappointed!

The Dry. Fantastic book couldn't put it down.

Wow. Excellent read!!!

Another hype. Very disappointed with this book. Amazed that a female author wrote such one-dimensional female characters....a lot of coffee pouring and cooking delicious meals for the men-folk, actual flashing of dimples, etc...almost Nancy Drewish. The struggling family farm has been done and overdone and any hope that this would at least be somewhat different with an Australian setting...another let-down. Simplistic, seemed hastily written -- it wasn't called "the next 'Gone Girl,' " -- but it is another wake-up call to read glowing reviews with a skeptical eye. Waste of money.

The Dry. Great book about murder in Australia. The story was fantastic and kept me guessing. Small town people with small town ideas make this book a great read.

Incredible plot!. I just love this book! Few books catch my attention like this one, the plot is incredibly written inviting you to a non-stop reading (It took me two days to finish it!!!). If you like to read plots that have an unexpected end, this book is for you, highly recommended!

The Dry. Kept me engaged the entire way through. Finished it in less than 2 days. Great read.

The Dry. Great book with the mystery of Australia. The telling of the story and its characters is well done.

The Dry. Starts off quite slowly. Once it picks up, one has developed a knowledge of the characters and a familiarity with the location. Finishes with an unexpected result, even for someone who knows this genre well. Highly recommend this book.

Shocking. I'm actually pretty angry that all of this book's positive reviews led me to waste my time and my money. I knew the characters backwards and forwards from the moment they were each introduced because they exist in a million different stories. Ethereal, coveted blonde (with a single dark secret, of course); suicidal brunette who the popular jock secretly loves; nerd who never gets the girl and never gets over it; bigoted small town with no redeeming qualities, and drunk, idiot farmers all around. The "twist" ending is obvious by about page 100. No. Just no.

Both books. I really have enjoyed reading these stories. I hope more will be written soon. Thank you, Marci Clark

The Dry. I enjoyed reading this book, and loved the ending. The author presented real characters and gave the reader an idea of the harsh realities of life in a small, impoverished community. Alcoholism, gambling addiction, domestic abuse, loss and abandonment destroy lives, families, and communities. Aaron Falk was a good guy, and I'm glad he finally understood Ellie's domestic nightmare -- she was stronger than I thought, but her monstrous father was even more evil than I imagined. I hope there was justice for Ellie, and Falk understood how much he meant to her. Great writing!!

Great recommendation. I saw this on a celebrity's social media that said it was a quick read. I suggested it to my book club and I've enjoyed it a ton. It's a pretty engaging story line and a great quick read for a plane or trip!

The Dry. Boring

Loved it!. What a gifted story teller this woman is. I really hated for this book to end.

Dark but well written. Good sense of a desolate area with desperate people, all with secrets.

Solid. I really preferred this book over The Lost Man. A solid mystery(ies), hard to put down.

Definitely a fantastic book. Kept me interested from beginning to end!! Great story line

Dry. Great book and I rarely read mysteries.

The Dry. WOW! I am a new author who was looking for a good mystery novel to fuel my own writing. What I got when I purchased this book, was ever so much more. I could not put down my iPad. So many twists and turns to keep me the turning pages. I cannot wait for the next book by this author.

The Dry. Jane Harper’s descriptions of the Australian setting for “The Dry” are mesmerizing.
