Heartless by Marissa Meyer Book Summary

From Marissa Meyer, the #1 New York Times–bestselling story of Wonderland's most notorious villain: the Queen of Hearts.

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland, she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

In Heartless, her first stand-alone teen novel, the New York Times-bestselling author dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

Impossibly Possible. Possible spoilers . . Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite stories and tales. To have a retelling about the red queen before she became the queen of hearts is beautiful. The way this author handled the retelling with all these old rhymes, fables, and stories, was beautifully done. The cast of characters in this book were outrageous in the best ways. Also seeing a noble girl want to be a baker because she has the talent, and she is one of the best in Hearts. Her desserts were such a sweet way to show her passion for something she loved with her friend. Jest, the joker, he was amazing with his talents and I loved Cath fighting herself to love him. You could see her in the book lighting up with the Joker, and how she would never feel for the bumbling king the same. I was rooting for Cath through the entire book, and when you knew she had the heart of a queen. I love that Hearts and Chess were two separate places it was quite fascinating to see that the looking glass was the key to both worlds. Raven and Jest were the other ones I was rooting for with their secret mission from chess, with Haigha and Hatta. The cast of characters was amazing and the author did a splendid job. Also the ending will leave you in absolute tears.

Depressing Ending. I suppose reality doesn't always end in a 'Happily Ever After Ending', but cmon now, this isn't reality. This is fiction. I read books to escape the real world, not to become invoked with it. The first half seemed great, but then 3/4 of the way through I was becoming depressed. I kept on yelling at Catherine, but there's not a lot you can do when she's just a fictional character. Didn't even read the last 20-30 pages or so, and anyone who's read the book will know the exact point when I stopped reading and skipped to the last page. I don't dislike Marissa Meyer, I just think that the last 1/4 of the book could be a lot better. I wanted a happy ending :(

Pretty good book. The beginning was kind of slow and it took me a while to get comfortable but towards the last half it got really good. I really wished it had a happy ending but it was so beautifully executed I’m not even complaining.

The Sisters Should Take My Heart Too!. When I read the book for the first time, looking at the first words, I expected something light hearted and intense. As I read I noticed small quirks like how Hatta loved Jest too! The ending killed me though. Meyer surely knows how to make someone feel for her characters. They killed off my FAVORITE CHARACTER! Be warned you may not be the same for 2 days after you read this! I 100% recommend for anyone looking for an origin story from the notorious Queen of Hearts ❤️

Loved this book at first but...... A wonderful book at first, and a wonderful love story at the beginning. I could not put it down. This turned into something unlike the others from the lunar chronicles.....a nightmare and a depressing story. Horribly disappointing and NOT what I was expecting. Only reason it's getting two stars is because of my love for Cath and Jest, if not it I would have only given this one. RIP to what could have been.

My favorite Book. I love the storyline, the characters and the imagery around the whole story where it makes the story feel real. I really enjoy reading this book, it is really good.

Beautiful!. Such a beautiful book from the way that she describes baking to the wonderful features of Wonderland! The author did an amazing job. So sad at the end, though!🤩😭😭😭

I getting bad vibes from this book.... Not like, the book is gonna be terrible but like, something’s gonna happen. Something not good. And trust me, I haven’t read any of the reviews bc most of y’all like to SPOIL THINGS. But yea idk it’s just, somethings gonna happen. It’s logic too, bc apparently this is a story abt how the Queen of Hearts is all: “OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!”. Ya know? So yea I’m reading this book with caution. I have had a few experiences with unhappy endings. And also I put five stars bc I’m halfway through the book and it’s interesting enough. So let’s hope it stays that way :)

Heartless. I just bought the book so I don't know if I will like it but I am realy excited 😊

My heart is in pieces. Please tell me I’m not foolish to still have hope of a happier (and not too impossible) ending? My heart is literally in pain after the final few chapters...

HEARTLESS kinda spoilers not really. okay this book isn’t a book with an happy ending but still it is so good. It is beautifully written and is a magical and beautiful world. I love all of the Alice and wonderland elements. Also jest is so smexy. It has a good twist and story on the queen of hearts story. I would definitely recommend and it is a great stand alone book

Underwhelmed. It took reading about half of the book before it grabbed me. It was predictable in some parts, I was expecting the entire story to be darker especially after reading Fairest. There were some twists I enjoyed towards the end but overall I was a disappointed. The lunar chronicles were so enjoyable and full of excitement that this just didn't meet that standard for me. She's a villain so it's assumed there's not going to be a happy ending. The author delivered on that assumption but it still wasn't as strong as her other pieces of writing.

Oh dear.... Definitely a good read, especially if you liked the lunar chronicles. Do be warned, however, if you get too attached you might end up heart broken. Overall, the story was captivating and a great read, so I do recommend it! Just, have a pack of tissues on hand

Heartbreaking. I loved Heartless. Marissa Meyer has done it again. I love every book of hers. But truly this was the saddest. I will not spoil it but my favorite character will always be in my memory. I even wished he was real but yet he is not. Anyways my feeling for the Queen of Hearts has changed. This book was heartbreaking. So after you read it you might never be the same again. ❤️💔💔💔🙂😢

Amazing, but tragic😔. This book was awesome and i ended it in two days. SPOILERS: My heart was broken for Catherine and Jest. And I don’t hate the queen anymore.since i read this book, i cry whenever i listen to castle crumbling by Taylor Swift. Its Catherines song😢

HEARTLESS. This was a great book. Lovely ending. Anyone who likes a happily ever after, should read elsewhere.

Definitely Heartless. A beautiful book it seemed. And then it transformed into a nightmare. No happily ever after here. If you love misery, you will love this book.

Just read it if you don't you will regret it. This book is unfathomably beautiful in every sense. I don't even know where to begin to say what a wonderful and astounding job Marissa Meyer has done and how well she gave this world and characters a life. This book, Heartless, will never leave your mind or heart while your soul will forever be shattered and ridden with the bullets made of ink and paper. It will become a classic that will be incomparable to any other author. I promise this. So if you don't buy it and read it now, mark my words, when there is a great Broadway show based on this you will wish you read the books as people talk to you about it. Marissa Meyer has a talent for creating the best kind of characters. This talent shone through very brightly in her past books of The Lunar Chronicles. Heartless has just as many unique and quotable characters that are funny, rude, wise, kind, good hearted, lovable, and mad. Her particular talent for piecing these personalities into the story will blind you worse than Carswell Thorne. In an amazing way. I feel as if it wouldn't be a proper review if I didn't get to fangirl over Jest. Bah. Forget punctuation and grammar and AAAAAHHHHHHHH OMG AAH JJJEESSSSSTTT. AAHHHHH WHAT WOULD THEIR SHIP NANE BE AHHHH OTP OTP ALEART JEST IS SO PRFCT OTP OTP I SHIP CATH AND JEST SO HARD YOU CANNOT IMAGINE AAAAHHHHH WOULD IT BE CATHEST NO THAT SOUNDS BAD HOW ANOUT JESTATH NONONONO JESTRINE NONONO NOTHING SOUNDS GOOD THE FANDOM WILL MAKE SOMTHING UP THO SO ITS ALL OKAY BUT JUST AAAAHAHAHH JEST I LITERALLY CANNOT EVEN. So while this book will take your soul and pretend everything's okay and you trust the book to care and feed it yummy satisfying osmosis then when your soul is all safe and warm and bundled in the pages then the book will crush it until powder is the only thing left then it will eat it and blow itself up until it will be impossible to clean up again *sob sob sob.* I have read many, many, many heartbreaking books that have been soaked in my tears, but this book left me in a puddle of salty water with chunks of my own heart floating out of reach. For days. Let me repeat. For days. I could hardly stand without seeing everybody in the book's life flash before my eyes. I have still not quite recovered. So what I'm trying to say is that I hope y'all enjoy it!

One of my favorite books. It was a well written book with a great plot. It hits some cliches but does it in a way that works with the book and makes it feel unique regardless. I read it in a single day and I would read it again any time.

Omg!!. I luv this book so much!! I was so sad that the Joker died!! But now I have a whole different perspective on the Queen of Hearts! Like she did not deserve that!! But the book was amazing!

Amazing book. This book had me feeling all the feels. It was maybe my favorite standalone book ever. The writing was done beautifully and the food descriptions made me wish I could eat some of Cath’s baking. SPOILERS ~~~~~~~~ The idea of Catherine (Queen of hearts) being just a sweet teenage girl with dreams of owning a bakery with her best friend just made me love her and hope against reason that Marissa Meyer would be like “Oh twist ending this isn’t actually the queen of hearts story!” Sadly she decided no such thing. 😭 Anyways, I found that the way she included you children’s poems was so creative! Like Peter Peter’s role in the book was crazy. Jest and Cath were such a cute couple and I was so sad when he died. I mean I saw it coming, but STILL. I was literally yelling at the book/Cath not to go through that door, “NO CATH! WHO CARES ABOUT MARY ANN. DON’T DO IT!” Sadly she did it anyways and Jest being in love with her followed suit. Loyal till the last. I loved Raven and Cath’s friendship at the end. I know it’s probably weird that I like that two people bonded through a mutual desire to get revenge on someone by beheading them, but hey, it was awesome. The book ended with Cath very mad (in both the angry and crazy sense). I wanted her to murder Peter Peter because honestly I found myself wanting revenge as well. Overall a beautifully written book with tons of detail. Begins in hope and light and ends in tragedy. Also I loved the whole thing with us finding out why she hates white roses! Okay I’m done now 😂 SPOILERS OVER ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Thanks for reading! Also I highly recommend this book!

Loved it !. This book is a must if you like the story of Alice in wonderland, the worlds of the two are so greatly written alike it seems like there by the same person. Though when it started I would have never been able to guess the ending it’s a whole experience, that’s just amazing all around!

Pretty good. I thought it was neat.

OMG. This was the best book ever written in my opinion. I LOVED Jest. He was the best. It also made me feel bad for the Queen of Hearts. Before I read this book, I honestly thought that she was a complete jerk, but now I sympathize with her.

😭😭😭. This book had me in tears!!! It was so beautifully tragic, and heart wrenching.

I loved this book so much❤️. I knew it was going to have a sad ending, but the book was still amazing. It was a great origin story for the Queen of Hearts and I loved it.

Plot was Disappointing and Frustrating. Unfortunately, its been a year since I’ve read the book and my memories of it are quite hazy, but I remember my frustrations with it for the most part. Having read, and loved, Meyer’s ‘Lunar Chronicles series, I am sad to say this book really disappointed me. ‘Heartless’ is a book centered around the love between two characters and how tragedy and loss within the relationship has affected the main character. That is to say, readers should be able to relate to the characters and what they are feeling, and should be able to “ship” the romance. Without this key component, it renders the book frustrating and difficult to believe. Unfortunately for me, I experienced this very issue. As a reader who was able to empathize with and “ship” every relationship within ‘The Lunar Chronicles,’ including more complex and unhappy relationships like the one between Levana and Hayle, I am frustrated to say I experienced no such emotion when reading the “love story” of Catherine and Jest. From what I can recall, the romance felt rushed, and the author was writing as though emotions and connections had been established that were not yet established. This means that the entire time I read the book, I was confused and frustrated as to why I as a reader, and Catherine as a character, were meant to care about anything happening between her and Jest. Hopefully this expresses my frustrations properly. As a result of having no emotional connection to the romance or faith in its legitimacy, the plot twists in the book as well as the losses, challenges and compromises, became frustrating and constant reminders that the characters were stupid and annoying rather than heartbroken and in love. I loved the Lunar Chronicles, and I love Renegades, and I am really sorry to say that this book was one of the most frustrating experiences I’ve had when reading or otherwise following a story. (I had to read it all for a school project so I couldn’t just stop because I wasn’t enjoying it)

Love all of her books!!!. I absolutely adore her books. I have all of her books in hard copy even the special editions!!

Very disappointed. Loved the retelling of Alice in Wonderland. The characters were interesting and engaging. I could feel the mood of the story spiraling down and was hoping she would write in a twist to bring the story back into the light. No such luck.

Excellent. I got this book for the first book of my friend’s book club. I loved the Lunar Chronicles, but I was a bit skeptical of a romance novel. But boy, it was good. It’s very slow at the beginning but once you get to the end, it’s so worth it. Would definitely recommend.

NOT A HAPPY ENDING. Okay, I picked up the book at the store, and was like 'Oh, this looks cool.' I got through most of the story before realizing this was about the QUEEN OF HEARTS!!! It's very sad, so make sure you don't mistake this for a happy book about rainbows and true love. THIS BOOK DOES NOT BELIEVE IN FAIRY TALE ENDINGS.

Sooo good and sad. I couldn’t stop crying 😭 because my favorite character DIES I was sad for a week and all my friends were asking me what’s wrong and I answer my favorite character dies In a book that I read and they come to the conclusion that I’m crazy So if you like adorable ships, swords, and depression then I suggest this book to you!!! I’m one of those people even though I end up crying my eyeballs out.

Heartbreaking!!!😭😭😍😍💔💔😭😭. I loved and at the same time hated it!! Why did you have to go in the pumpkin patch Maryann?! Why did you have to go through the door Cath?! Why did you have to DIE JEST??!!!!😭😭😭😭 It’s too bad there can’t be a sequel with a happier side. But other than that the book was great even though I’m gonna be dead inside the next few days. But hey that’s how some stuff works. Go Marrisa Meyer!!❤️❤️

a good tale. It took a while for this book to get going, but once it did, it really went there. I liked the ending. I really bought the character's torment and heart break.

Amazing:). This is quite possibly my favorite book. I love the characters and all of the plot twists. Seriously an incredible book that I can not recommend enough! I have been seeing a lot of bad reviews because people think the book is too depressing, but I think the sadness in the book honestly just makes it better. Be warned though, this is a very sad book but definitely worth a read!

Amazing!!🤩. This is my all time favorite book!! And I love how she is telling the story of the queen of hearts Instead of Alice. This book made me to never want to put it down! I wish u created a series do it though

Witty. A witty working of Alice's world. Another fun read, thoughtful character development. Enjoyed it.

Heartbreaking. I absolutely love this book. It's one of my favorites!! I've read it over and over again since it first came out! Even so, I can't believe it took me my third read to realize that Hatta was in love with Jest too! I don't know how I missed it my first couple of reads. It just made their stories all the more tragic, for they could not run from fate
