The third book in the thrilling #1 New York Times bestselling series!

In this breathless third installment to Victoria Aveyard’s #1 New York Times bestselling Red Queen series, rebellion is rising and allegiances will be tested on every side. Perfect for fans of George R.R. Martin’s Game of Thrones series.

Mare Barrow is a prisoner, powerless without her lightning, tormented by her lethal mistakes. She lives at the mercy of a boy she once loved, a boy made of lies and betrayal. Now a king, Maven Calore continues weaving his dead mother's web in an attempt to maintain control over his country—and his prisoner.

As Mare bears the weight of Silent Stone in the palace, her once-ragtag band of newbloods and Reds continue organizing, training, and expanding. They prepare for war, no longer able to linger in the shadows. And Cal, the exiled prince with his own claim on Mare's heart, will stop at nothing to bring her back.

When blood turns on blood, and ability on ability, there may be no one left to put out the fire—leaving Norta as Mare knows it to burn all the way down.

😭😭😭. Omggggg, okay, so it took me a bit to keep going after I found out the ending. But I just have to see exactly the way Victoria Aveyard ends it to really judge for myself how I like it. I mean, come on, I’ve already read half the books of the series plus, the short stories. I also own all but War Storm. So, onto the review. Sooo I did have a little bit of trouble for the first couple of chapters. By now, we alllll know she’s with Maven and she goes on about the silent stone. Horrible, got it. But then as you dive deeper into the chapters, it starts getting better! You start seeing a little more into the story and we see Mare get her drive back. As I am writing this I’m in Chapter 13. I love the fact that we have Mare’s, Cameron’s, and Evangeline’s perspective in the book. I’m also glad that it’s mostly Mare’s perspective for the fact that, Mare is the reason why I am reading this book. I mean I really enjoy all the characters, main and supporting, but it started with Mare, okay? But in all seriousness, when the attack attempted assassination towards Mavin started I couldn’t wait to keep reading! It was over too soon. 😭 WHAT THE HECK IS MAVEN UP TOOOOOOOO. I can't. Now he's involved with Lakelander's princess? Bye bye Evangeline? Wow, just wow. I am dying. When does Mare escape her dumb shackles?! I CAAAAN'T. What more can I say? Um, 1. I LOVE Cal’s and Mare’s relationship so so much. The fact that he respects her on a level we don’t really see anywhere else, is so amazing. The relationships between the 3 females are coming along nicely. Farley included. I like seeing that Cameron isn’t as cold to Mare. Also, it’s nice to see how other people view how she is after coming back. We get a lot from Mare, but it’s like an outsider looking in which is nice. Can I also say that when Mare and Cal fought on the training field and how he just ripped his shirt off, like wow, hot. But totally unfair. Now, I’m on Chapter 28 and hyperventilating with everything that is starting to go down! I can’t. I’m falling so in love with the series. I’m praying the ending won’t kill me. WHAT THE HECK! WHY IS HE DUMB? I GET THAT I KNOW HIS CHOICE BUT REALLY?!?!?!!?!?! IM DEAD. THIS. BOOK. KILLS. I WANT TO CRY. AND I’M NOT EVEN DONE WITH THE SERIES. I WANT TO CURL UP IN A BALL.

Hhidchrkrke. No one has any idea how excited I am for this book to come out! Ever since I finished glass sword I just wanted to read more! OMG OMG!!! 😁😁😁

AHHHHHH😢❤😢❤. Loved loved loved loved this book, but she leaves you with yet another cliff hanger! And the ending is completely unexpected! But it is so good and definitely the best book in the series so far, in my opinion!

Feels. My heart has stopped beating ever since I finished Glass Sword... I gotta stop reading these kind of books that mess with my emotions. And I will... After this book comes out

😭🥰😭. So good!!! I wasn’t a huge fan of Cameron’s POV just cause she’s not my favorite, I Evangeline and Elaine together just made me like them both less. Other than that, it was fabulous!! Cal is amazing, Maven is…..also amazing. Also Farley makes me cry!!!😭

Good grief. Rose than the twilight series. Unless you’re …12.

10 out of 10. I absolutely love this book series! I began reading Red Queen a week before King's Cage was released, and had no idea it was just coming out! Anyways, this ended on such a dramatic cliffhanger and I can't wait for the next one!!!

Throwing a Fit. As said... the first 2/3 of the book are slow with lots of detail and the last third is quick! Please don't make us wait a WHOLE year for book 4. Definitely is a fantastic series! Keep it coming!

Read it!!!. Ok so my last review for glass sword was a bit judgmental because it wasn’t great. Luckily the book was the ultimate redemption. It was great to see Mare not as annoying she really turned back into the Mareena that I adored in the first book.I loved the lgbtq representation through Maven and Evangeline it really made me like them alot more. I must say it was cool to have Evangeline and Camrons point of view but…. IM SORRY I HATE THEM BOTH. I must say even though the first one was a hot mess this one is where it’s at please read👏👏👏

OMGGGGGGGG. Basically I'm an active red queen fangirl❤️❤️❤️❤️and I am so incredibly pumped for this book y'all don't even know!!!!!!!! I preordered it in June😂😂😂but ya y'all NEED to read this series it's insanely good👌🏻😏

OMG WHEN IS IT COMING OUT!. Please please tell me when it is coming out!!!!!😭

Good but not great.... I chewed through the first two books in this series EXTREMELY quick. I was absolutely engrossed. And I was SO excited for this next installment. However, I did not enjoy Kings Cage as much as the others. The best parts of this book are the scenes with Mare and Maven. They are electric (see what I did there...haha) and exciting. I can feel the connection and the story leap off the page. As the book progresses, the story becomes stale. A lot of time is spent building up to the predictable climax that feels ultimately rushed and tired. Mare's development is nice to see, but this book needed a. It more to keep my rapt attention. It took me four times as long to finish compared to the other books. That being said, I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

Great book! Things to know:. Overall, I adored this book. It kept me on edge throughout it until the end. It was just as great, if not better, than the other books in the series. A few things that I thought were a bit disappointing were these: 1) The beginning was slow. Although I understand that Mare was a prisoner and there wasn't too much to do with her, it seemed that the beginning (At least in Mare's point of view) was just a lot of the same thing - She was upset, losing hope, and tortured both by Samson and Maven. I had been hoping for a bit more than that. 2) This might have just been me, but I feel that Maven's character changed in this book. In the previous installments, especially Glass Sword, when he captured Mare, he seemed to be doing it out of evil and to hurt the Scarlet Guard along with their cause. In King's Cage, though, I think his obsession with Mare was a bit out of character for him. Don't get me wrong, the way it was written was fantastic, but I believe that if he was going to have an obsession with Mare, it would've shown more in previous books. After all, Elara is dead! But, like I said, overall it is an amazing book. Must read!! :D

Yes. It's coming out on my bday

Better ending expected. Although the book was amazing ‘till the last chapter, I had nothing to say about the epilogue but😐. Really disappointing for a series I LOVED. I believe Aveyard could have ended it in one more book and continue the story about the republic that created after and not just in one chapter.(broken throne wasn’t convincing)

OMG. AAHHAHAHAHHA!! i absolutely love this series soooo much!!! 10000000/10🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

good. why do i still like maven more than cal

OMG!!!. I'm still in shock from the other to and I'm going to die waiting for this one. I can't wait!!!! Pure heaven this book will bring me!😇😇

King’s Cage. This book was amazing! Thank you Victoria Avegard for giving us the different perspectives on each of the characters. I got to learn more about each character. Although, I had many mixed feelings about Cal and Mare’s relationship. They are meant to be and their love grew immensely. I got to really feel what Mare felt about Cal so much that every time the book would talk about him I would get butterflies in my stomach. But, when they broke up, I cried. I thought their love was to perfect to last but I never ever wanted it to end. So, now I am on the the next book hoping that Cal and Mare would be reunited. Thank you for making you my favorite writer!❤️❤️❤️❤️

Amazing. This book is the best of the best. I read the whole series and Wow. This book has changed my life. I really hope they make a movie about this series. I recommend this series. I actually love this series so much i have started reading it a second time. This was a amazing adventure!!!

SOOOOOO GOOOOOODDDD. Literally read read it rn 🙈

To excited. They can't expect me not to be excited after reading the end of glass sword. Can't wait!!!

Sooooooo. Um. Spoilers. Well, I just gotta say WOW. I had not been a fan of Glass Sword. But this book made up for that. Although…yeah I got nothing. I mean, I didn’t like that it was from Cameron’s POV cuz she’s just not my fav character. But am I just really, really really really really really stupid or something? Because even after reading all three books I STILL love maven. I ship Maven and Mare. Or kind of…Maven and me 😈 I thought it was sweet Farley named her baby after her mom. …out of no where, Sara Skonos can just talk again? The ending was I think the worst. Everyone’s shocked at how Cal chose the crown but i srsly wasn’t lol It was obvi I mean Even Cameron was like yeah he’s lying so I did not freak out and idk like I said I think Maven is the hottest guy in the world so I’m biased but I never really shipped Cal and Mare. Last complaint is sort of a whole series thing but why is mare so SMALL??? Like, she’s always like ‘yeah I’m so small and there so tall and my natural gaze looks at Evangeline’s waist’ like what no heroines are always so TINY and like there are TALL people too you guys I also loved the Evangeline/Elaine ship Read and tell me Maven isn’t the best

Wonderful. This book is a work of art. We start out with Mare where we left her, in captivity, but eventually the Little Lightning Girl gives the Silver King a piece of her mind. There is joy, heartbreak, and betrayal. 10/10, would read again.

King’s Cage. I have absolutely blown through these stories. I do think King’s Cage is my favorite so far. Mare finds herself only to lose herself again. I find myself liking Evangeline…what?!!! This story definitely singes and sings…thank goodness I was only a double tap away from the next and final book! I can’t wait!

I Was In Shocked 😳. I didn’t even realize how amazing and compassion of some of these Characters are in this Red Queen Series... 1.Mare Barrow: Is amazing powerful and good personality plus have a good heart ❤️ and know what to say to herself and her loved ones as well. It really does make it effort from the First Book which is Red Queen how it sort of started with herself taking with her best friend Plus her Family as well she knew in her heart plus her Mind that it really make her angry and frustrated about her Brother Shade Barrow Who was a Scarlet Guards in the first book he wrote her Family a Brief Letter. From time to time I knew that there was something missing in that Barrow Family. 2. Maven Calore: From the First Book in the Red Queen he was different and kind to Mare Barrow she doesn’t realize how dangerous with being in the Palace with the Calore Family as a Queen also her names was just “Lady Mareena” Or “Lightening Girl” annoying how that sounded for her and Maven her Husband At first Honor her and request her to his Queen and Wife. Maven wasn’t a good person for her or anyone especially his Mother who is in charge of his mind from inside of his head that doesn’t make sense to myself because how difficult and different plus confusion to at least knowing that Maven is a liar in his Characters in his eye plus his words as what he usually say to Mare and some people in the courtroom “I’m Men With My Own Words” something like that. But over all King Cage got some juicy detail about Maven Calore it will blow your mind as you keep turning pages...especially Iris that girl who know what she is and what she is hiding to herself be aware be careful as well as you read. ~~☺️Deadly_Roses☺️

I adored this series. I’m rereading it again with my partner because I enjoyed the story, and I love seeing how they respond with the plot

Great Book!. Loved this third book a such as the previous ones. Such a great author.

Breathless. I am so glad I read this book because of the thrills it gave me! I kept wanting to know answers and couldn’t put the book down! I also would sit on my bed reading and yelling at characters like Maven or Iris for being monsters. Overall, I love this book!

torture continues 😩. I've waited for this book to finally come out and I read it in four days. It did not disappoint but for the fact that I am now utterly depressed that I have to wait for Mare Barrow's story to continue. I'm at the mercy of the author. Please make it quick.

live, laugh, love red queen 😭✌️. ok can i just start by saying this book is nothing short from EVERYTHING. it had me laughing, screaming, crying, and smiling too many times to count. mare and cal’s relationship really grew and at parts i even had butterflies (lol) and maven oh, maven. i miss the old him- but i love how va added lgbtq because it really added depth to his character- and he had really amazing character development- but he’s like, “uGh wHy dOeSnT mArE lOvE mE” when he literally freaking kept her captive for 6 MONTHS. anyways overall this book was too good to even say with words.. and can we talk about the povs?? low key i still kinda hate evangeline- but cameron has became less of a brat so love to her but i swear the povs always start in every. book. SERIES.

Wow. I waited and waited for this book to come out!!! I could not put it down... this series is phenomenal and now I cannot wait for the fourth! I recommend this series to everyone

From one cage to the next!. I just finished this book and probably shouldn’t write a review because I am so emotional. But, here it is. I was not ready for the slowness of this book. I long for the scenes of happiness and joy. The beginning of this book was dark, and depressing. Saying all that, I had to read it. I couldn’t stop because I knew there was a reason. And boy was I right. Mare goes through such struggle. Maven is so twisted and in love with her. But only in the way that he can love. (Tear). I want the boy that Mare knew him to be to show back up and rise above this monster of a king that Maven now is. Camerons points of view were...... also dark. I always found myself wanting more endearment from her, but as a character that would not fit in this setting. But you do get to see her strength. Farley is my favorite character. She reminds me of Aelin in SJMaas TOG series. Seeing Cal’s love for Mare in this story is sweet and he does love her deeply. You can’t help but want a powerful and happy ending for these two. After just finishing the book, I am anxious and heartbroken. I can’t reveal why, but I am buying the next book so I can continue and hopefully be pulled out of my agony!

TOMORROW. I've waited a year for this book and I've preordered it months ago and ITS FINALLY COMING TOMORROW. I cant say how excited I am. Such an amazing series and it's my favorite series.

Heart Palpitations. It's books like these that make me want to stop reading it for fear of having a heart attacks but can't seem to put it down. It's like authors want to kills us with all this suspense. I hope this is the last one cus I don't know how much more my heart can handle❤️💔❤️💔❤️💔❤️

There WILL be a fourth one. I love this series. I purchased this book the day it came out and finished it today. It's amazing. I hate the ending though. But, it's a book so that's to be expected. There will be a forth book coming out next year and I believe it's the last one. So yeah... you should read it

Seems good so far. I’m not sure if I should continue, even if it seems good at first. Red queen was incredible, glass sword was almost as good as the first. And that is not common. But still, they first in a series is pretty much always the best, and I’m not sure if this going to be very good- it could be a beginning of a downfall of the series like in many others. The beginning was really good, actually, but it’s not like red queen where I couldn’t put it down. My mom had to take away my book so I could just sleep, but this book I set down and slept easily. But, once I’m finished, I bet I won’t be able to wait for the next book- like when I wait for a test to get graded. I don’t want to be impatient, but a while ago I couldn’t sleep thinking about what would happen in this book. Should I continue? Is it worth it? All of the sleep that will get thrown away?

MY COLORS! What a ride !. You couldn't tell me that I wasn't stuck imprisoned with Mare. VA did a stellar job making you feel as if you were living the nightmares Mare went through. I can't give anything away, but her power of description makes you feel like your a fly on the wall in every scene, taking it all in at a safe distance. So many different psychological and social factors in this book that the characters went through. I'll be waiting for the next, with charge card ready and a big goofy grin.

Amazing. I’m OBSESSED with this series, I can’t put it down.

This is quite the book. SPOILER ALERT: 9.5/10 I didn’t like it when Mare and Cal had to separate because they are meant for each other! Hopefully in the next book they reunite. Overall really liked the book I recommend for 13 years and older

Amazing. My favorite series at the moment, I literally can put the book down but I have to do hw rip.🥺🥺🥺

Amazeballs!. Loved it! Can't wait for number 4!

Amazing. Just when I thought I would mentally prepare myself to the best ending of any novel series, BAM! The best ending happens making me even more emotionally attached to the novel. Truly one of the best most unique and creative novel series anyone could ask for. Thank you Victoria!

Another great addition!. By far, this series has been my favorite one out of the others I own. I am excited to add War Storm to that collection!

thumbs up. great ending to a great series

Best book EVER!!!. So, let me warn you right now: I am going to spoil. If you do not want any spoilers, please scroll down to the bottom. Anyways, in the first book at the end-ish, we learned that Maven and Elara were the bad guys. It was more obvious for Elara, but not for Maven. That was hard to figure out and it was a GREAT plot twist. But… in the second book, Mare kills Elara but Maven is still bad. I’m not saying that this book is bad, I’m just saying that Maven is basically following his mother’s footsteps and it’s not him doing it, per say. But, in those two books I was not at all scared of the villains. Except for Elara, she’s pretty scary. But, at the very end, Mare basically makes a trade with Maven. I don’t remember exactly what it was, but Maven did take Mare as part of the trade. In the third book, it’s more about Mare and Maven. And… that’s about when I started getting cautious. Maven was basically an orphan who wanted to kill his brother, Cal. Mare was the prisoner and she was trying to undo what his mother did. It did not work. Not at all. She was close, but not really. So, Mare gets rescued by the Scarlet Guard and she and Cal are back together again. EXCEPT when Anabel comes and says “Cal needs to be the new king of Norta when Maven falls.” Mare is surprised, Cal is surprised, but he wants the crown. He asked Mare to be his queen but she didn’t want that. She asked him to refuse the offer, but he didn’t want that, he said he didn’t have a choice. So, they break up. In the fourth book, about halfway through, Maven starts getting scary. Like, nightmare scary. I’m not going to spoil the fourth book, but this is just a warning. Anyways, if you were one who did NOT want spoilers, let me tell you, this book has twists and turns. It will keep you guessing and you’ll know that no matter what you guess, it will either be close, or completely wrong. But it’s never right. This is a great book, I recommend this for anyone who enjoys new and unexpected things.

angry. i really loved this book until the ending. terrible ending to what could've been a fantastic ending

Amazing. I read this book in one day, I couldn't but it down!

Insanely Deep. This book is amazing! Some chapters get boring in the beginning and overall just feel tragic, but they set up the story for some interesting turn of events. This is the first book in the series with multiple perspectives. We mostly see Mare and her struggles, but it’s nice to see other characters and their developments as we get more understanding and even admiration for characters we originally hated. SPOILERS AHEAD: In this book, we have so many deep questions begged. Beginning with Maven, we have the question of how culpable is he when he had his mother twisting him inside out, and can he be redeemed? To what extent is he responsible for his actions when he was irrevocably set on this path? The answer is left open-ended, of course. In regards to Maven, I feel that while he cannot be trusted— and certainly not underestimated— he ought to be pitted, a fine line to walk. Next, we have the question: Is love enough? When two people’s values ultimately go against each other, is love enough? And the answer here, unlike the previous question, is painfully given: no. While Mare and Cal love each other deeply, they both have parts of themselves that inherently won’t work with the other. They would need to compromise themselves to be with each other, which is something they won’t do. Not yet, at any rate. At this point, I feel that Cal has made his compromises: he’s killed Silvers. He has fought against his own to be with Mare, but while she’s made the ultimate sacrifice in giving herself up to Maven to keep Cal safe, she has not had to give up her morals. And when the time comes for her to choose Cal as she begs him to choose her, she does not. Instead, the two are left at an impasse and go separate ways. Ultimately, while I love these two together, I think this was the right choice for Aveyard to make. If Cal had chosen Mare or Mare had chosen Cal here, neither would have been true to themselves, leading to resentment of each other in the future. Nevertheless, just as Cal’s love of Mare blinded him into making moral compromises in the past, I believe that Mare, while she will not be his Red Queen, will eventually compromise something in the future for him.

Kings cage. My friend introduced me to the series and after one chapter of the first book I was hooked. In a weird way I think Mare is a relatable character because she is always fighting with her emotions. My all time favourite quote from the series is , which was said by Maven. Victoria Aveyard did a great job on this book and i can’t wait forth book to come out on the 15th!

Loved it. I love this series so much! It's so hard to put down, and I found myself staying up really late to read more! If you loved the first 2 books you'll love this one as well! I really want another book to come out soon. I'm not going to spoil it but I did not except what would happen at the end :,(

Good.... 3rd book in the series and still entertaining... a few parts dragged on a bit but over all great story line and kept me interested enough to go on the the last book.

Amazing !. Probably my favourite of the series so far.
