Based on a True Story by Norm Macdonald Book Summary

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “Driving, wild and hilarious” (The Washington Post), here is the incredible “memoir” of the legendary actor, gambler, raconteur, and Saturday Night Live veteran.

When Norm Macdonald, one of the greatest stand-up comics of all time, was approached to write a celebrity memoir, he flatly refused, calling the genre “one step below instruction manuals.” Norm then promptly took a two-year hiatus from stand-up comedy to live on a farm in northern Canada. When he emerged he had under his arm a manuscript, a genre-smashing book about comedy, tragedy, love, loss, war, and redemption. When asked if this was the celebrity memoir, Norm replied, “Call it anything you damn like.”

Worth a thousand stars!!. What a great man! My childhood hero, this book made me cry and laugh at the same time. Thank you Norm! I’m really proud of you!

Great. Norm! The best

Brilliant. That essentially sums it up. Comedy masterpiece combined with unique style only possible by Norm. Although it has been said before, Norm is a true satirist and the modern day Mark Twain

Fantastic. It’s a fantastic book.

Best Ghost-Written Book by an SNL Alum. Whoever wrote this book for Norm Macdonald should be very proud of himself. It certainly isn't a memoir; that became obvious about two-thirds of the way through. But it just seemed crazy enough to be true. Thinking it was comic non-fiction, I was fooled into reading it, as I don't like novels. This one became an exception -- to almost everything. I eagerly await his next book, whatever form it pretends to take, and whoever writes it for him.

Interesting. Good read. You have to be familiar with Norm to get the joke.

Memoir?. Seems like fiction and truth. Questioned where this was going but the end came thru. Who is Norm MacDonald? Will need to read another book to find out!

Talentless hack who slept his way to the top. Norm is hilarious and this book is awesome. He is an original and should've been given David Letterman's spot, or Jay Leno's spot. He is one of the few comics that actually has an original thought every now and then. Bababooey to you all. Also this book helped me get women, money and fame. I highly recommend it. I had no idea that Norm rubbed one out at the Whitehouse with Bill Cosby back in the 90's. Very enlightening. A+ 5/5 stars.

Norm to a Tee. The writing is brilliant and illustrates his wit and intellect. He's definitely a wordsmith and even then, has the ability to mash a word where it doesn't belong and make it work. The story certainly has a slight fear and loathing tinge to it, and ties several working plot lines into one. Entertaining and has that "dry" humor he's known for although I'll say labeling is not something for the arts. I would say the story does leave room for desiring more context and/or a climax where there's more resolution to a bunch of moving parts but then again that's what makes Norm, Norm.

Huge Disappointment. This book completely sucked. And before I explain why, let me start by saying I think Norm Macdonald is hilarious. I was really excited to read about his career. Unfortunately, this book is a complete fantasy and fabrication. I'm not sure if a single sentence was accurate. I don't understand why he'd write this. He literally didn't reveal anything about himself other than his complete self loathing. He's a comic genius. I really wanted to hear how he did it. This book was a complete fail. I want my money back, Macdonald!!!

Norm Macfonald was a funny guy.. He shoulda stuck with standup.

Norm does it again !. Norm does not disappoint! I often read this book while eating lunch. I spit out my Coca Cola in laughter!

Phenomenal Read. This book is a masterpiece. It is at once uproariously funny and deeply moving. Norm writes a rollercoaster of a book, with highs and lows, twists and turns, and we are along for the ride. Thoroughly enjoyable. Norm mixes luxuriant prose with homespun yarns. You will only be disappointed if you expected a traditional memoir. Norm's life events are dots that he connects with the most hilarious and outrageous tales. Wonderful book.

Norm.. If you love Norm, you will love this book. And, I love Norm.

I miss Norm. Not the greatest book, I wish Norm had shared more truth but it’s Norm so I forgive him. RIP.

Wow! Norm can write.. Didnt realize Norm was such a good writer. This book is reminscent of an early Twaine.

Well I don't think it could have gone any other way. It is exactly what you'd expect from a book by Norm Macdonald. And so you either get it or you get why people think he's great, but find them incorrect. In a probably not at all ironic twist, my wife is cut of the second cloth, whereas I'm a first cloth sort of fellow, and he hangs a lantern on this oxymoronically common peculiarity right there in the book. If you ever saw Norm do a roast, or tell jokes at the White House, or steadfastly refuse to act like a normal human being in a show in which he absolutely is supposed to be playing a normal human being, then this book will make complete sense to you, because in its pages he will not be what you want, but what you need him to be. You should definitely get it.

Norm Lives Forever. This is a great book that provides looks into Norms mind in a way that well compliments all his work I’ve seen over the years. Despite the story seeming real, fake, or embellished, they provide some truths and laughs.

Entertaining. Good read very funny stuff

Norms dry wit!. I think if you don't get his humor, you don't understand humor. Thanks for making me look like a fool on my flight, reading your book and laughing all the way home.
