Wow - Must Read. Read this all in one sitting - finished at 5:12 am. I am just in shock. I felt everything with these characters and what more can you ask from a book? Powerful voice; relatable characters. I’ve been out of high school for a few years now, and that fact often leads to me being unable to enjoy media targeted towards the young adult demographic. The relative closeness of it, combined with the feeling that I should be beyond it, really make books like this often hard to consume. With this book, I did not feel this way once. Frances, the main character, was relatable on the immediate level in that I was always fairly good at school, but have really wrestled with the expectations that are often placed upon those that excel. The conflict between acknowledge the privileges without minimizing the pain was really well explored. Aled, though, was where I really questioned if Alice Oseman had secretly installed a camera inside my head. Throughout the book he yhad trouble communicating his feelings to others, degrading all his relationships through his inaction. This is truly something that resonates. The feeling that if you could only say the words, ever so close at hand, you could make everything okay, but instead you sit and wait, trapped in your own head as the world crumbles around you. I read this book because Kat (paperback dreams on YouTube) couldn’t even get an entire sentence you when trying to describe her undying love for it. I was not disappointed in the least. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever had a feeling, and is okay with a book giving them many, many more.
